hinathan··on What really happened at LivingSocial?
There's so e serious irony there if those are the numbers, given that that's what the merchants are supposed to be doing.
hinathan··on Willow Garage to Shut Down
FWIW, clicking on that link with Safari showed an unexpected popup: "WebProcess wants to sign using key "Apple ID Authentication [timestamp] in your keychain". Using some sort of client cert for SSL? I didn't find an obvious reason for the interaction.
hinathan··on Which apps will drain your battery and data plan? Verizon’s got a list
Ranking multiple measures in a stack of stars/circles without labeled 'better / worse' margins seems like a pretty terrible data visualization.
hinathan··on Lock elision in the GNU C library
I did that too. Weird.
hinathan··on Jawbone buys Visera and MassiveHealth
I'm glad to see Jawbone going for broke on the 'health and wellness via data' front. I've been a fan of their design language and technical chops since back when their headsets had wires.
hinathan··on Introducing the Facebook Card, a New Type of Gift Card
So will FB (eventually) make a timeline post on my behalf when I buy coffee?
hinathan··on Why an Airline That Travelers Love Is Failing
Both in terms of perks and barrier to entry, alas.
hinathan··on Why an Airline That Travelers Love Is Failing
My wife has been 1k for the last several years. Before we met I had no concept of mileage programs but traveling with her has really opened my eyes.

The funny part is at some point it feels a bit like playing a Zynga game, including the occasional "screw it, I'm so close I'll pay a little cash to bump up to the next level"

hinathan··on Why an Airline That Travelers Love Is Failing
The folks who strolled in earlier might have more status (miles/revenue) on this airline, and having that means a great deal to the airline's systems and humans. They know what you're worth to the company and whether it's worth bumping someone else lower on the totem. It doesn't feel good but it's generally pretty rational.
hinathan··on System Strings: iOS and OS X strings localized in 34 languages
Nitpicking, but on my Safari 6 this page doesn't render properly because I have 'Default' encoding selected. The page is authored as UTF-8 but doesn't declare that in the content-type header, doctype, or a meta tag.
hinathan··on Device Distribution For A Universal iOS App
I'm surprised by the large skew towards CDMA vs GSM for iPhone 5 devices. Verizon winning converts from AT&T?
hinathan··on SpaceX Falcon 9 Statement on First Stage Engine Anomaly
This thread is pretty cold by now but I wanted to thank you for the link to Ignition — it's a really neat window into some of the chemistry and practice of 20th century rocketry. Reminded me of Max Gergel's "Excuse me sir, would you like to buy a kilo of isopropyl bromide?" http://library.sciencemadness.org/library/books/gergel_isopr... which, now that I look at the link, is hosted at the same server.
hinathan··on RIP Hans Camenzind, Inventor Of The 555 Timer
I feel compelled to point out a clever comment (not my own) on the linked page:

"127 kOhm * 470 uF silence for the fellow."

i.e. using those values for the external resistor and capacitor would result in a moment of silence (followed by another and another, I suppose)

hinathan··on How to use Gmail to destroy your relationship with your investors and customers
That's the joke.
hinathan··on Slate: Tiling window management for OS X
I paid for Divvy.app but may switch to this - love the configurability.
hinathan··on Zimbabwe residents synchronize toilet flush
This reads like satire — I mean it's a clever idea but I feel like it falls into the 'too cute' category, subject matter aside. Will be curious to see a follow-up as to whether it worked, was a disaster, or turned out to be a hoax or publicity stunt.
hinathan··on Presenting the Heroku Dashboard
This seems like a neat feature but it's also painfully slow. Is that normal or is the dashboard under unusual load? Mysterious slowness seems like a recurring theme on Heroku.
hinathan··on Alert: Your Plant Needs Water
Hope the Twine ships eventually, it's such a slick solution. A few years ago I wired up my office basil plant to a moisture sensor so it could post to its Facebook page (Basil Green) when it needed watering. Being tethered to a computer was sort of overkill since the real data rate was three or four bits per day.
hinathan··on Github is down
Selection bias, good point.
hinathan··on Github is down
This feels like a pretty standard pattern for a lot of services — fail, come back up on backup DB, fail again when backup proves to not be capable of handling the surge of load, then eventually come back up on the primary DB once people have gotten bored and stopped hitting 'refresh'.

Is that a function of not prewarming failover DBs, or is there something pathological about the primary-secondary pattern?

hinathan··on Bower: A package manager for the web, from Twitter
I thought so too but then scrolled down more — the design of the page made me think it was just a splash but there's tons of details underneath the big header. :/
hinathan··on How Dangerous Is Your Couch?
Arlene Blum is kind of amazing. I met her maybe 20 years ago in the context of mountain climbing. Can't imagine climbing with a baby strapped to myself.
hinathan··on In deep with Tesla CEO Elon Musk

It was a difficult thing that was made more difficult
by one of our investors who was just an absolute
bastard, nobody should ever take money from them.
Anybody know whom he's referring to? Pretty harsh.
hinathan··on Things I didn’t know about the WebKit inspector
I kind of like it but the console is broken-slow. a simple console.log(foo) doesn't draw anything for a second or two after the event fires and even then it's empty for another moment while the inspector decides what to draw. Very odd.
hinathan··on When they have to change the rules
Re mattresses, it's not just your imagination. Many/most of the industry leaders have been caught up in private equity shenanigans over the last few years. http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123629959334046669.html
hinathan··on Motorola's Montage Javascript app framework
Is this a downstream result of work done by the 280 North team? Meanwhile, Github "Issue count" = 280, heh.
hinathan··on Judge throws out entire Apple/Motorola case
It the plaintiff can't file suit again with the same patents against the same respondent.
hinathan··on Twitter Completely Down
Hasn't Twitter demonstrated a general disinterest in their developers of late?
hinathan··on The New MacBook Pro: Unfixable, Unhackable, Untenable
So pulling the battery becomes a crutch for the RIM software team. No need to do a more elegant watchdog timer or properly trap Java errors. Just pull the battery!
hinathan··on Kittydar – Face detection for cats
Ditto for Mac/Safari. There must be something diabolical and/or useful to do with this tech but I'm struggling to come up with a good use case other than 'because kitty'
