hullo··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (November 2026)
Justworks | NYC + Toronto (most roles require 2+ days in office) | Full-time | Salary + equity in every offer | https://www.justworks.com/careers

Justworks is a PEO and HR platform for small businesses. We run payroll, benefits, compliance and HR for small businesses so that they can focus on growing their own business.

The engineering problems are the unglamorous, high-stakes kind: pay people correctly, compute and withhold the right taxes, and keep sensitive customer data accurate and on time. If a pipeline is wrong, someone's paycheck is wrong.

Some roles we're hiring for (see the careers page for the full list + links):

- Senior Software Engineer (many): https://boards.greenhouse.io/justworks/jobs/8179751?gh_jid=8...

- Engineering Managers, DevSecOps, Applied AI, etc.

- Senior Data Scientists, Senior Data Science Managers

- Directors/GMs of Product, GPMs, Senior PMs, etc.

- Marketing, Sales, Ops, Legal, Customer Success, etc.

Salary ranges are in each posting. Apply at https://www.justworks.com/careers

hullo··on The stagnancy of publishing and the disappearance of the midlist
This is a good example of something that sounds true but is actually not. Private equity put Borders out of business (famously). Barnes & Noble is now private but by all reports (still) doing fine. There are more independent bookstores today (in more towns) than ever before.

hullo··on Secret meeting between Apple and TSMC reported to reserve all 2nm capacity
Have they ever had a public meeting?

So basically they had a meeting, and someone is guessing what they may have talked about?

hullo··on Peloton cuts back on Apple Watch support
If true, an interesting move; failing to account for the possibility of the iPad dominating the tablet market essentially sunk Peloton President William Lynch's run at Barnes & Noble when they invested too heavily in the production of first party Nook tablets. Those Nook tablets were actually a great product, far superior to the Fire tablets Amazon was eventually able to muscle in to their own niche, but it didn't ultimately mean that much in the face of Apple's domination.
hullo··on Tech takes over: New York is the sector's second city
I am a tech worker raising my family in Brooklyn and it's quite lovely. Expensive, yes, but lovely. Whether you find it a "rat race" of a lifestyle or not is much more dependent on your internal psychology than the city itself.
hullo··on Why I’m selling some Twitter shares
Snap is not a part of Facebook, they're independent and looking to go public.
hullo··on Amazon guts affiliate program, cuts fees for electronics in half
I would be surprised if the largest affiliates don't have the ability to negotiate fees beyond what is included in the public schedule...
hullo··on 1213486160 has a friend: 1195725856
I was personally expecting a piece about a baffling resurgence in the use of ICQ.
hullo··on Instapaper Premium is now free for everyone
"Hi I just got something for free and I'd like the opportunity to complain about it now." I mean he said there are no plans to shut it down. What timeframe? You want a promise that for X years you'll continue to receive this service for free, unchanged? They're extending the value. There's literally nothing to be grumpy about.
hullo··on Google’s become an obsessive stalker
No, you're limited to the choices the app developer presents to you, and Google Photos presents Always, which you can reject to get Never. I hadn't even known it was an option previously, as they're the only app I have (had in the past) that requests permanent ongoing location. And I didn't even notice what I'd agreed to until my location services indicator wouldn't turn off, and I had to track down what was triggering it.
hullo··on Google’s become an obsessive stalker
Google Photos for iOS is horrible about this - there are only two location settings, (1) no location services or (2) always on. The sensible default would of course be (3) on while I'm using this app. There's absolutely no reason for photos to be (literally) tracking us while we're doing non-photo things other than better-monetizing us for advertisers. Even if we nevermind the privacy implications, stop burning my battery.
hullo··on [dead]
Title has been editorialized, there's nothing in the article supporting the idea that hedge funds love Hillary. Yes she & super pacs supporting her have received the most (well-outpaced, collectively, by Trump's rivals), but based on the reporting it appears she is the least-bad candidate in their eyes. One would expect that a candidate in favor of closing the carried-interest loophole will never garner the "love" of hedge funds.
hullo··on Marissa Mayer’s Payday
The level of attention that these stories about Mayer attract is kind of sad, and really not fair. The big jump in the "payday" that the article teases is the possibility that Mayer will sell already-granted stock. i.e. Not new comp at all. Yawn.
hullo··on Amazon search was down
I think it comes down to how you define "a huge amount in sales". Let's optimistically say they lose 1% of sales over a 4 hour period although it could certainly be much higher. Is 1% of Amazon's sales a huge amount for them? Not in the short term. Is that absolute amount a huge amount for me, personally, or most of the other companies in the world? It sure is.
hullo··on Five weights monospaced typeface for the benefit of charities
I also don't see the warning. Toss your domains into Google webmaster central if you haven't, it'll give you info if it actually arises (and is just generally a good practice.)
hullo··on Monument Valley in Numbers: Year 2
"With just 3 games, Supercell made $924M in profits on $2.3B in revenue in 2015" http://venturebeat.com/2016/03/09/with-just-3-games-supercel...
hullo··on Amazon blocks non-Prime members from buying certain video games
Completely deliberate. As others pointed out, they've already been doing it, on less popular products that caused no backlash. It's there in the article up top, pre roll-back:

UPDATE: Amazon has provided VideoGamer.com with the following statement in response to this story:

"One of the many benefits of Amazon Prime is access to exclusive selection on a number of great products. Customers who are not Prime members can sign-up for a 30-day free trial of Amazon Prime, or they can purchase those items from a Marketplace seller."

hullo··on Losing Money
They are not all that good. As he says himself, not even their other funds are as good as the 2004.
hullo··on Ask HN: How much do you make at Amazon? Here is how much I make at Amazon
if it wasn't explicitly tied to his salary, he could also have income independent of his tenure there, either earned or inherited. it does happen.
hullo··on Ask HN: How much do you make at Amazon? Here is how much I make at Amazon
Not an Amazonian, but everything I've ever read about their comp culture has said that stock is heavily valued/weighted, so there's a selection bias there in that anyone who's seriously considered them should know it going in and be alright with it.
hullo··on Ask HN: How much do you make at Amazon? Here is how much I make at Amazon
I think you're not doing the math on the stock (which is currently over $550). e.g. $73k base + $21k bonus + $57k stock = $151k for an engineer in their second year (no info about previous experience). Absent a lot of other context it does sound fair to me, or at least not "shockingly low".
hullo··on Joe Cool – Why isn’t Trader Joe’s on social media?
Literally hundreds of millions of people. McDonalds alone has 62 million followers on Facebook. If half of the people on Facebook or Twitter follow a brand, that's over a half billion.
hullo··on Harper Lee has died
Gene Wolfe (Book of the New Sun) is great and a common recommendation along these lines.

Ishiguro's The Buried Giant from last year asks to be described as Literary Fiction with a fantasy setting.

But chasing down "If you liked Gene Wolfe you might like.." recommendations online would probably be fruitful.

hullo··on Dick Smith Is the Greatest Private Equity Heist of All Time
BN hasn't invested in 3D printing. There is one model of cheap 3D printer sold in stores, which is of course not actually produced by BN. Next time you're in ask how many they're holding in inventory, and you'll find it's not many. NOOK is indeed a money pit, but the expense is rapidly decreasing, not increasing, a fact that can easily be checked as they talk about it every quarter.
hullo··on Dick Smith Is the Greatest Private Equity Heist of All Time
Barnes & Noble is in no danger of going out of business. Even when Borders went kaput there was a long warning, and that was a very differently run kind of business (although eerily on point for this topic, as it was run into the ground by PE).
hullo··on The Best Books I Read in 2015
Fair enough, an experiment.
hullo··on The Best Books I Read in 2015
I think part of it too is feeling qualified to (publicly & prominently) judge fiction, which doesn't come as naturally to as many folks as judging "ideas" on a nonfiction list like this may – & particularly with the extended write-ups Gates is doing.

hullo··on Do One Thing
That's such a natural reaction to draw given the setup, that even the author of the article draws it, if one reads through.
