The future victims when the imagery stops being enough.

Total return to the investor doesn’t require constant income growth. I don’t know if this is a particularly surprising chart.

They also acquired 250 people who they are now laying off and Weta is rehiring.

Seems like a disaster of a deal by Unity. Weta just got free money for a snapshot of their code.

That’s fine, but it’s okay to call out the author’s bias. They contributed wonderful tests of the limitations of the headset. But the headset is only a failure for the authors use case. (AR)

That is a valid problem, but with MR pass through there is also a compute issue. The cameras are not in the same location as the users eyes. They have a wider parallax than the users eyes and are forward several inches. There is no simple transformation to correct the video to have the same perspective as the user. Instead a 3d representation of the environment must be created, camera imagery projected on to it, and then rendered to the position of the user’s eye. All of this done as fast as possible and highest rate possible. This explodes in compute with increasing resolutions. MQP is doing this with 3 cameras, color compositing, and without the aide of a depth camera.

This is the same person who did comics at Google. Their work was a highlight during my time there. Google even used their comics for basic employee training.

I’m surprised folks say that we can’t be critical of own employer. Our employers are not lords or kings. We choose to work for them and can replace them.

I believe you can shatter then with vice grips in an emergency.

There's a compact and free form on the book on that page.

Also helps the consumer. My ISP doesn't offer unlimited bandwidth. Covid-19 has me hitting caps from being home so much.

Isn't that what VecLib is for? Also there are other math libraries to use on ARM. I think we use EigenBLAS in our products.

This article opens up with a mistake? It's 7 yuan per dollar. Not the other way around.

Yes

Relevant Lemon Demon song "Redefine your Logo" which appears to be about the Pepsi Logo. https://youtu.be/qImHuiYnVQ0

Does Navlab not predate this work? It started in 1984. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Navlab

Can't they just use an accelerometer?

I think your 1.3 kW number assumes being near Earth.

Yeah, but not in the first release.

This likely won't work too well because the Pixel and S8 are the only ones they have camera and imu calibration for. If you do hack it to get it working, you should at expect degraded performance or complete failure.

Is this what you're looking for? https://developers.google.com/ar/develop/web/getting-started

I've been looking for something like this. Massif makes it look like my code is reasonably healthy. HeapTrack shows I'm doing absurd number of small heap allocations.

I believe this is the correct link for this paper the last time it showed up on Hacker News.

Nothing new here I believe.

Here's some more information from the company blog: https://www.blog.google/products/google-vr/daydream-bringing...

I think your number includes design and building one of the first solid state computers.

I believe depth of field is only a function of aperture size and not focal length.

The mask kinda looks like a cosine filter rather than just a simple grid to make many pinholes. If so, then it might be a small version of heterodyne light field camera. http://web.media.mit.edu/~raskar/Mask/

This was filed also before the re-org to Alphabet. I'd imagine that future patient filings would say Calico or Alphabet instead of Google Inc.

I remember the same thing. I thought there was some form of fraud associated with this because the electrodes would only work for a little while. I thought there was a malpractice suit about patients being left with a bunch of unremoved wires in their legs.

What's the Von Braun approach? I mean, his work was a model for hardware reuse and improvement every launch. (I think considering the Atlas, Titan, and Saturn 1.)

A similar but different idea is the TOAST projection. However here it starts with an octahedron instead of a cube. The benefit is the texture can all be stored on a square and is argued has a more uniform sampling that equirectangular projection.
