kcdev··on Amazon Staffer Says She Was Fired over Bathroom Breaks for Bowel Issue
You're forgetting this is a warehouse employee where productivity is tracked and ranked against other employees. Amazon cannot write up one employee and not another without something like a dr. note to justify the different treatment.
kcdev··on Pelosi and a lifetime of trading
The STOCK Act is supposed to prevent this. But the same politicians who passed the law and had the media cover it as much as possible, then later quietly passed another that the law would not be enforced.

kcdev··on Stop Using Encrypted Email
We likely need a better globally supported standard. I think Gmail is onto something with the "confidential" send setting, but I don't like that it's tied only to Google.

For my services that use automated emails, I only send plaintext emails and use shortlinks. No sense in wasting time trying to make an email look good on every provider and hope it's encrypted or worry about which ones it will be blocked from because they don't support encrypted.

It should be used as a notification mechanism nowadays. But we do need a better universal platform - maybe that's webpages...

kcdev··on A serverless email server on AWS using S3 and SES
I think and hope this guy is trolling. If not he will be left behind if a back end dev. Even if you have"real" servers this is how your micro services should be built.
kcdev··on Effects of Intermittent Fasting on Health, Aging, and Disease [pdf]
Assuming this is accurate, your lifestyle is not typical. Others trying intermittent fasting and/or vegetarian diet will surely see benefits in blood work.
kcdev··on Ban Facial Recognition at Festivals
I always thought of festivals as an escape with like minded people. Privacy should be upheld.
kcdev··on Google chief: I'd disclose smart speakers before guests enter my home
You said it yourself: smartphones are already capable of it. So what difference does it make if you add an Alexa or Google Home? At least those aren't going everywhere with you. This is the defeatist attitude, but this tech is probably here to stay. We just need to do our best to make sure companies do the right thing.

kcdev··on Ask HN: One-person SaaS apps that are profitable?
Surprised Simple Analytics[1] hasn't been mentioned yet. I don't know how profitable it is but this seems like a great example re: the question.

kcdev··on How We're Building a Business to Last
Agreed. I actually didn't give it much attention for the longest time simply because of the name (I'm talking years - just checked it out a few months ago although I heard of it probably a couple years ago). Now that I've taken the time to check out the project, I'm sold and will definitely use it in place of Postgres, etc. But, the name does turn off some newbies. Eventually it may not matter as all good brands eventually just become familiar.
kcdev··on A Guide to Crypto Currencies
Good points. The fact that they are giving the big players a good reason to get involved seems like it could dominate if those same big players decide to promote it.

kcdev··on Ask HN: How to eat and drink properly?
I recently got serious about my diet. What I thought was going to be a very difficult lifestyle change that I was going to try for a few weeks ended up being much easier to achieve than I thought. Now, I don't ever see myself going back.

In simple terms: Eat plant-based foods, period. Veggies, fruits for snacks, beans, nuts, etc. Avoid processed foods other than plant foods that are minimally processed for freshness (liked canned foods).

I thought I would struggle to stop eating meat, especially chicken. After the first few days, vegetables and beans started to taste amazing! I had no idea what I've been missing all these years since meat mutes the taste of everything else.

I also avoid dairy and snack foods. I "cheat" about once every two weeks during social events, but even then I crave the healthier options. I now look at bad foods differently and I feel better than ever.

Tip: Take a one-a-day multivitamin that includes B12. When you’re getting started, get rid of all the bad food. If it's there, you'll eat it.

kcdev··on JavaScript Fatigue or My History with Web Development
For small projects, this is definitely still OK. Green browsers don't really need jQuery any more, but if it's what you're comfortable using and it gets the job done, then use it.

Large projects or team projects, you will want to use something with more structure.

kcdev··on [dead]
The contributor notes that the term "suicide" is technically not appropriate; he also calls it offensive.

If it is technically not the correct term, then change/remove it. But when did the term become offensive?

kcdev··on On average, skipping college and investing tuition costs nets a higher return
Bankrupt-able student loans will not help the problem. The universities who are taking advantage of the easily available money from the government will still get paid. During bankruptcy, the loan write down hurts the lender. In this case it's us taxpayers.

The real answer is to cut what's funded by the government, make the rest of the financing come from the universities themselves, AND make it bankrupt-able. Then as demand declines and universities share the hit for each bankruptcy, universities will lower prices to something more reasonable to increase supply.

kcdev··on Ask HN: Why shouldn't I leave Google?
Did you have another job lined up when you left?
kcdev··on Ask HN: Why shouldn't I leave Google?
I can't imagine you'll enjoy working elsewhere if you're not happy at Google. If you're an entrepreneur at heart, you'll likely not feel fulfilled until you're working on your own product. I'd say stick around Google (at least for the paycheck) as your mentor suggested until you have an execution plan. Also, if you decide to find another employer in the future, it will be more difficult to explain that you quit because you felt "unfulfilled" (that would scare me if I were considering hiring you); but if you quit to start your own company, that's a commendable act.
kcdev··on Ask HN: I don't want to be a founder anymore
I'm not in your shoes, but I'd happily trade places. I assume you're calling most of the shots, so if you take a step back and reflect, where is this stress coming from? Who is putting pressure on you? I'm guessing it's you doing it to yourself because you hold yourself to a high standard and have a strong work ethic. Excellent qualities.

So take a few days off, refocus, slow down, and just do what you can do. No pressure.

kcdev··on Young men dropping out of the job market to spend time in an alternate reality
It's the capitalist system. If you want to set the objective, then get to work and create the means for yourself to do so. It's so easy to blame the boomers, but in my day job, all I see are younger people who expect a promotion after 6 months, while the boomers are happy to have a job, come in, do what's expected, and don't complain.
kcdev··on Young men dropping out of the job market to spend time in an alternate reality
Your objective is to get a paycheck. It doesn't have to be more complicated than that. Then, use your off time do things more important to you.
kcdev··on Why your startup should be a Delaware C-Corp, not an LLC
When it is time for fundraising, is it possible to just create a new C-Corp, then sell the assets of the LLC to the C-Corp? Are there major tax implications? Is it possible to sell the assets for a $1? Or would that be in violation of some tax rule?
