Infosec | Software Engineer | Madison, WI | ONSITE | Full Time | https://www.infosecinstitute.com/

Infosec builds cybersecurity education software (LMS for in-house content, as well as hands-on labs, etc.). We really like our mission of equipping the world to fight cybercrime, and we're building some really big, fun things.

Come join us if you love the pace, opportunity, and energy of a startup, but with the comfort and balance of a well-capitalized, bootstrapped, stable company.

We generally hire "full stack", but are certainly open to those who gravitate toward one end or the other stack. We are open to SRE types as well.

Feel free to contact me directly at gabe.krambs@infosecinstitute.com to learn more.

krambs··on The Mega-Tsunami of July 9, 1958 in Lituya Bay, Alaska (1999)
Using this event to think about what an asteroid hitting the ocean might be like is quite clever.

"The author suggested that with proper scale corrections, analogies could be drawn between the impulsive impact of the Lituya Bay rockfall to asteroid impact on ocean floor sediments and on such impulsive wave generation. Although, the trajectory angle, terminal velocity and total mass and density of material of an asteroid would be significantly different than those of the Lituya Bay rockfall, it was suggested that these could be scaled and adjusted for the purpose of validating a model of asteroid impact."

krambs··on David Bonderman resigns from Uber board after sexist remark
Also, what's actually said surprisingly influences what's seen as disparaging.
krambs··on David Bonderman resigns from Uber board after sexist remark
I wonder where the pressure came from that actually made him resign. His firm?
krambs··on Going for the 5 hour workday
I remember the Heroku founders espoused 6 hour work days for developers. They felt that this was the daily limit for creative workers - and that there was not only diminishing returns after 6 hours, but potentially negative ones (due to bad decisions made when overworked).
krambs··on Why I don't believe in Uber's Success
I don't think he's saying that it will take a long time for them to turn a profit, but that they never will (or only ever will see the tiny profit margins that, say, the airline industry does).
krambs··on Top Albums of 2016: METACRITIC
The critical roundup is often more useful (as some of the more obscure albums in this list just don't get enough reviews to render the average meaningful): http://www.metacritic.com/feature/critics-pick-top-10-best-a...

A down year for music (though it unfortunately seems like I've been saying that for the last 4 years). I've listened to everything in the top 20 in the critical list, and the only albums I'll likely be listening to in 2017 and beyond are the Radiohead and Bon Iver entries. Certainly tracks here and there I loved from Beyonce, Kanye, Anderson .Paak, Chance, and Frank, etc, but none of the other albums have grabbed me yet from start to finish. (That can always change, of course!)

krambs··on 10 Tech Movies to Get You Coding Again
Loved The Social Network movie. But the movie's soundtrack (Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross) has had the greatest effect on my coding. Still listen to it while working almost every day. Maybe matched only by Sigur Ros's Takk as my favorite Getting Shit Done soundtrack.

DISCO - Houston/Austin | Full Time | ONSITE

http://www.csdisco.com

DISCO is working on some extremely cool things at the intersection of engineering and law. From machine learning to big data to complex-yet-blazing-fast React-based SPAs, if it's a cliched buzzword we're probably working with it.

We're post-Series C and rocking and rolling. Drop me an email if you're seriously talented and seriously fit one of the roles below.

gabe+recruiting@csdisco.com

* UI Engineer - 3+ years exp with single page app and associated frameworks.

* Web Server Developer - 5+ years experience building web servers on multiple stacks.

* Infrastructure Engineer - 7+ years experience building core infrastructure components and subsystems … ideally exposure to BIG DATA.

* UX Designer - B2B background and at least 5+ years experience.

krambs··on Announcing .NET Core 1.0
Have you tried writing a complex wep app/api with C#? It's an absolute joy to use. Python still has it beat for math and ML libraries, but for getting up a quick web app with robust (and easy) data queries (LINQ) it's pretty unbeatable.
krambs··on Trump
How could anyone know what Trump stands for? It seems to change with every speech. He's a crude opportunist embarrassing our country every day.

For someone so influential to lend him any sort of legitimacy is entirely reckless.

krambs··on 'We're in a Bubble'
True, but institutions like these generally have a very small percentage of their dollars in high-risk investments.
krambs··on Ask HN: Describe your first enterprise sale
Selling software to law firms. Father of a friend's wife had heard I was building the particular type of software his firm needed for a case. They purchased the software almost sight unseen. Sometimes you need a little luck with those first sales!

CS Disco (csdisco.com) | Houston, TX | Operations engineers

Disco, a Bessemer-funded legal technology startup in Houston, TX, is always looking for skilled technical support persons to join our elite support team. Both daytime and nighttime shifts are available.

You will do a combination of direct customer support on high level technical problems and programming/scripting to solve customer issues (often involving large amounts of data and/or textual metadata files).

Programming language of choice unimportant, as long as you rock at something. Impeccable English communication skills also required.

We are working on solving some very big and important problems (including machine learning to automagically classify legal documents), and our founders include a Y Combinator graduate and the youngest-ever Harvard Law graduate, as well as some of the top operations engineers, software engineers, and data scientists anywhere. We work hard and play hard.

Please message us directly at jobs@csdisco.com, and let us know why you might be a good fit for Disco!

krambs··on Ask HN: What's left for early startup engineers as the company grows?
Skunkworks!
krambs··on Georgia Tech Student Indicted in UGA Hack
I suppose this is the 21st century equivalent of TPing houses or stealing the mascot. Unfortunately for this dude it's also a felony, apparently. (Though I have to imagine they will let him plead to something lesser.)
krambs··on Getting a startup idea: Part 1, Choosing a topic
This is a great (the only?) way to start. One thing I think is also really important is to be a domain expert in the field of your idea, or be ready to find co-founders who are.

Obviously domain expertise isn't totally applicable for something like having a great idea for a new spin on a social network, but where you are getting into a vertical (like healthcare) it is probably essential. Otherwise you won't know how to make a product that the professionals in that market truly want.

krambs··on You Can Now Get ESPN on the Web for $20 a Month
So if I get this, HBO Go, Netflix, and Hulu Plus, I'm looking at something like $60/month (plus my broadband costs). (I can get broadcast TV over antenna, though reception isn't always great, even in a big city like Houston.)

Almost approaching the costs of buying cable, right?

Disco | Houston, TX | Engineering, Operations, and Sales (also VP Engineering)

Disco makes the best legal technology in the world, and is looking for exceptional people to join us. Our goal is to automate every part of the legal profession that doesn't require human legal judgment.

Our team already includes some of the best and brightest out there, including the youngest-ever Harvard Law graduate, a YC alum, and the former CIO of Sonic Foundry.

Shoot us an email if you are looking for important societal problems and great challenges, including using machine learning to categorize legal evidence (starting in the coming months). Eventually we want to be the Google of private data.

Our engineering stack is .NET/RavenDB/Lucene, with a heavy javascript front end. If you are are great at whatever you work with, we want to talk to you, but we especially need those with experience in our stack (or front-end), or with file-type processing (extracting images and text of the files) or pdf.js. We are also looking for QA engineers - but again, if you are exceptional at whatever you do, we want to at least have a conversation!

We just raised $10M from Bessemer (and were profitable before we took funding), so we are around for the long haul.

Email me directly at gabe@csdisco.com with a short note about why you would be a good fit for Disco!

More on Disco and our team here: http://csdisco.com

No, they can't. This is an incendiary set of facts - but most certainly won't be upheld in any reasonable court.
