ksec··on Gemini 4 Carbon
It is part of Office 365 ( or whatever they are calling it now ) subscription and apart from coding, it is literally forced into everyone's throat in Fortune 500 for day to day task.
ksec··on Wealth Inequality in America drawn to scale
>Why is it normal that regular people would have to sell their homes just to have a prayer of paying their minimum

Because that is not normal and shouldn't happen either. And I dont understand why this is used as an example.

I dont expect normal people to have to sell their stock. Nor do I believe in tax on asset for anyone. Capital Gain Tax should just be Income tax.

ksec··on Wealth Inequality in America drawn to scale
This thesis assumes all billionaires are holding on to companies that "has power on par with most nation states".

In reality majority of billionaires are in industries and companies that does not even remotely have the same benefits or power.

ksec··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
Same here. I couldn't understand it until like you and the comments before, saw younger generation all thought screens by default should be touchable, and other people casually scroll on the display and then return to keyboard for typing.
ksec··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
Not sure why this is downvoted but it is a valid concern. I will wait and see some thermal testing as someone mentioned on new cooling design which I can't find on the page just yet.

Do they have the same OLED? Same PPI? Same Tandem OLED? The First Tandem OLED on PC only came in 2022 IRRC, and laptop in 2024 / 2025.

Switching to OLED in 2016 makes zero sense when brightness and burn in issues are not solved.

ksec··on Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index v5
Why did they do that? Any ideas?
ksec··on Why Micron Is Suddenly Ditching 4F² DRAM as Rivals Double Down
I hope I am wrong but still dont see any major breakthrough in near future we could bring the BOM cost of DRAM down to below $1/GB. Not even 4F^2 would do that.
ksec··on Genie 4
I was under the impression he has already fly past the catapult.
ksec··on Microsoft offers mass buyouts for roughly a quarter of its workforce
I wonder when will Apple do something similar.
ksec··on Microsoft offers mass buyouts for roughly a quarter of its workforce
Worth reminding or pointing out the obvious, as of writing there are 225 comments in this subsection and none of these discussions or comments could be written out on HN just 6 - 8 years ago. So at least it is somewhat healing in the right direction in US.

Not sure I can say the same for UK.

ksec··on Python's experimental JIT to be removed
It is more than that. CRuby have had multiple JIT attempt before YJIT landed. From what I can tell CPython didn't have that. And luckily enough we now have ZJIT replacing YJIT.
ksec··on A Printer Printing onto Paper
While this is fascinating, I am sitting here wondering if anything has improved in the Inkjet printer world.

Does it still clog up? There are many be one or two more refillable ink printers but are they good? Has printing quality improved?

Or are they still a bag of hurt we should all just hope for better and cheaper colour laser / LED printer.

ksec··on Just imagining a workout can make you stronger (2016)
Martial Arts have been doing these for centuries if anything it is more like modern science rediscovering it. Although I believe it is much more Neural adaptation that muscles hypertrophy.
ksec··on Just imagining a workout can make you stronger (2016)
In Martial Art there are also these imagery training. I thought this is a pretty well known and well studies field?

Thank You for OP asking the question and thank you parents for some insight.

>If you have suggestions on how to name our products better......

Too late for that. I hope you guys can at least stick to these naming scheme for at least another 2-3 years going forward. Not everyone follows AI / LLM intensely, and it seems there is a new naming changes every year or so.

At least conceptually OpenAI's naming is easier to understand than Claude.

It terms of capability, it would be great to make it clear somewhere that this is 6.1 Model "+" technical communication, vision and computer use improvements. So that at least we know what we should try with these new release and choose a better model for certain workload.

Right now, other than pricing, it is confusing as hell. And in hindsight I wonder if there are fatigue in choosing one people just go with Open Model and stick with it if it is good enough.

ksec··on The new iPad mini
They have enough bezel room to make it into 8.7" or even 8.9" version without changing the dimensions of the mini.

I believe this is the lightest iPad at only 255g. I just wonder how much more weight can they shave off.

And if they are going to kill the iPad? The current iPad line up is split into Pro, Air, (iPad) and Mini. Surely the mini could replace the normal iPad?

ksec··on The Curse of Soldered RAM
DRAM problems used to be a common thing, at least AFAIK in the 90s up to early 10s. I wonder if that still the case or is it now a non-issue for the first 5 years of usage. Our Watch, iPad, Phones all have more memory than old computers. Even Apple Watch Ultra now has 4GB of memory which I thought was crazy.

If it is not, how would all these appliance with memory doubt with bad memory?

ksec··on iPhone Duo Teardown
>Nearly 10 years in to foldables, and they still bring so many caveats. They are consistently worse for size,

And that is why Apple is only shipping theirs now, it is getter better and finally have a decent trajectory in the next 3-5 years to overcome most of those issues. I mean you can pretty much look at State of the Art from Chinese Android phones to see where we are heading in terms of hardware. They are now to the point USB-C port is the limit of how thin they could make their phone.

ksec··on The Goose Programming Language
First, Congrats on the release!

Do you know if Goose is the first time something like this has been done?

ksec··on OpenSSL 4.1.0
I wonder what is the current marketshare of Libressl and OpenSSL ?
ksec··on Crystal 1.22
One of the biggest complain about Crystal is its compile time. Unfortunately there isn't an easy fix.
ksec··on No more icons in every menu by default
>This leads to overemphasis on the visual aspect ....

For Apple, and specific to Apple, when they fired Scott Forstall, there is no one to protect the software UI guys. The 2012 reshuffle in the name of "collaboration" by Tim Cook saw Design team taking over everything design, including Software. 2013 saw iOS 7 and then they spend 3 years to walk back a lot of iOS 7 UI changes. In 2016 many of their old UI leads "retired". Having no old guards to defend their turf, giving Alan Dye more rooms for power grab.

Since then, if not earlier, despite the whole UI becoming more android and cluster mess, there have been little to zero major UI changes other than new skin.

And like Apple's software, that is 10 years of resume driven development where they just want to ship features after features.

ksec··on OpenBSD 8.0
Phoronix do test BSDs from time to time. But for different reasons I think OpenBSd missed twice. I hope to see the performance gap being close enough we can stop thinking it is very slow.
ksec··on JDK 28
> see the pace of Java development pick up so much over the past few years.

I don't think that is a fair assessment. Java / JVM has been steadily progressing in the past 10 - 15 years. From languages to different part of JVM. It is only getting the sense development being picked up because HN and other social media are finally getting the clicks and interest again. The pendulum swing back because of all of different reasons.

And in reality a lot of these recent landed improvement were 5 - 10 years in the making.

I still don't like its syntax though. But I am not even sure if it is even an issue in AI driven development era.

ksec··on Apple's new 'Switch to Safari' campaign details why you should ditch Chrome
While all my day to day browsing annoyance were all gone by Safari 18.x, there are still bugs or rendering issues that i had to use Chrome now and then. Safari needs to keep grinding for the next 2-3 years and not cut any resources. I am not even asking for Safari on Windows, but Apple needs to up or sustain its current development and give it more time. Especially memory resources usage and multi tab operations.
ksec··on Firefox Enterprise
20 years later they are finally taking Enterprise seriously. I still remember how hard it was to push Mozilla just to support Windows Group Policy along with other enterprise requirements and they were simply not interested in enterprise. Even though later they did some bare minimum to support it.
ksec··on Solar surpasses nuclear power globally for first time
China themselves could have installed all of that capacity. But they are limited by batteries and other infrastructure and are catching up to those while planning a bigger play in the dessert solar farm.

They plan to increase 50% for Wind and Solar in 5 years, and possibly double in 10 years. Since 80%+ of all future planned Nuclear reactor are also in China, they would have more than double their renewable energy in 10 years. China is the number one in electricity production and usage, more than twice the size of US and 33%+ of the world. Given the size of China this is both exciting and scary.

ksec··on JPEG XL vs. AVIF for web use-cases
>now there are comparisons popping up showing how AVIF actually compresses better.

You perfectly summarise how I felt as well. The revisionist also tries to paint the story as JPEG XL was first banned due to security issues which is again not true.

But that is OK. Since JPEG XL has finally and rightfully won its place, mostly thanks for Safari. We can now hopefully wait for better encoder.

ksec··on Apple routed a graphite pipe through the iPhone Duo's hinge to dissipate heat
It wasn't always the case with software, before the internet era and updates. Software were done with a lot more cares because burning discs and distribution were costly. Exactly the same reason why Hardware put a lot of thoughts into it for failure because recalling product is expensive.
