loftyal··on Suicide rates highest ever among middle-aged men
Have you actually done a proper bulk/cut cycle? Gaining fat is normal when bulking, then you cut (lose the fat while maintaining the muscle).
loftyal··on Should JavaScript be split into two languages?
Did you read the article? The sugared JS would be a superset of the target JS. So you would only need to learn the sugared.
loftyal··on Ask HN: Machine learning engineers, what do you do at work?
...and people criticise node's node_modules. At least you don't spend hours doing this
loftyal··on No "Zero-Shot" Without Exponential Data
So were the developments before the last AI winter..
loftyal··on Can turning office towers into apartments save downtowns?
Wait until you see China. There are multiple cities bigger than NYC or London that most people have never heard of.

loftyal··on My Wife Was Dying of Brain Cancer. My Boss at Amazon Told Me to Perform or Quit
Not everyone here is American, "they" is more ambigous in the UK and Australia.
loftyal··on Ask HN: How Do You Learn?
^ This is the real answer that actually reliability works
loftyal··on Australia’s new mass surveillance mandate
They're trying to buy enough time to get enough people vaccinated before they "let it rip". Delta has an extremely high R value and will come back in force. This way we eliminate many more unnecessary deaths. Not hard to understand.
loftyal··on Media trust hits new low
Let's be honest, the media is just giving the people what they want, people subconsciously want bias news, its not pleasent to read news that disagrees with your own views. Why do you think facebook modified their algorithms for this? This applies to both on the left and the right politically.
loftyal··on Extreme Ironing
I can't think of a witty response. I fold.
loftyal··on If software engineering is in demand, why is it so hard to get a job?
Grinding leetcode != software engineering. That is my entire point, not sure why you're confused.
loftyal··on Burning out and quitting
I'm in London, can you name these companies? I'm earning 150k GBP a year at the moment (average senior/lead as I understand is about 80 or 90?), and have interviewed at a bunch of other companies with the same level. Interviews I get are all about experience, and coding problems that are related to software engineering and not computer science.
loftyal··on If software engineering is in demand, why is it so hard to get a job?
This is definitely not true. I've been contracting for 6 years in London, and am currently in an inside IR35 role, and have quite a few friends in the same space but in frontend/devops and its all the same. The differnce is atleast 2x for senior/lead engineers in golang or python.
loftyal··on If software engineering is in demand, why is it so hard to get a job?
While I agree with you that theres a few like that, you have forgotten about the candidates that genuinely don't want to spend their spare time grinding leetcode.

I worked at facebook, when I started looking for a new job, I had to start grinding leetcode again to prepare for a new job. Take a step back and realise how ridiculous this is.

Big companies that have prestiege and pay alot of money use it to eliminate false positives, not to actually recognise true positives. If your at a big company that can afford to throw away many true postives, sure use leetcode, but the rest are hurting themselfs by blinding following the mantra of FANG.

loftyal··on If software engineering is in demand, why is it so hard to get a job?
Isn't contract work looked down upon in the US? Here in the UK, its the opposite, contractors make atleast 2x the money, and most wouldn't dream of going back to salary position because no company wants to pay that for a permanent employee (apart from american companies and qaunt finance with nice bonuses)
loftyal··on Burning out and quitting
Isn't it pretty much everywhere doesn't require leetcode, except the US?

UK, Aus, and NZ definitely don't unless its with some American company.

loftyal··on My MacBook Pro had over 10k USD in repairs
This. I have a 4 year old MBP with a screen issue that's obviously not my fault. Apple refuses to fix it.
loftyal··on The Coronavirus Is Here Forever
Please stop talking garbage on here. This isn't facebook.
loftyal··on A Visual Guide to React Rendering
This is why you need to ask everyone who interviews "What is Container vs Presentational, and why is it good/bad". If you cannot give you a good answer don't hire them.
loftyal··on Amazon will monitor workers' keystrokes to 'combat data theft'
Most other countries provide universal health care, private health insurance is optional.
loftyal··on Amazon will monitor workers' keystrokes to 'combat data theft'
Kind of ironic isn't it, the people against universal medicare are the same ones spouting "freedom", but infact universal medicare would give them more real individual freedom than any other bills sent to the Senate these days.
loftyal··on AstraZeneca Scientist Says Delta Variant Makes Herd Immunity Impossible
Wont we achieve herd immunity via natural infecion then? Unless the virus starts to become like flu, which evades the the natural immunty very easily.
loftyal··on The rise of never-ending job interviews
Do thousands then and get back to me. It's all patterns, this "inspiration", is just patterns, your just not seeing it yet.

Its true on some degree, that you need some intelligence, but I have a few close friends who are FAANG, they are definitely not the best developers I've ever worked with, only difference is they really really cared about getting into FAANG. Getting into FAANG was basically their life ambitions, so they dedicated literally all there spare time to it.

loftyal··on The rise of never-ending job interviews
If they're IQ tests, then why does doing a whole bunch of leetcode questions make me better at it? Isn't IQ supposed to be relatively stable throughout one's lifetime?
loftyal··on Your Lifestyle Has Already Been Designed (2010)
This gap year has been pretty common in Europe/Aus/NZ for a while. Lots of young people do it. We even have visas for it called "working holidays" so they can work a part-time bar job etc, so you dont need to save up much to do it.
loftyal··on Ask HN: Do you have a process or a framework to learn specific skills quickly?
20% of passively reading/watching materials, to understand the why, how, and avoid any bad patterns, and 80% actually creating/doing something I've wanted to do with that skill.

This 20/80 mix works for me well and keeps me motiviated.

I'll also notedown in a .txt file in dot points things that seem important, especially things that I feel are important and would be easy to forgot.

loftyal··on 4-day workweeks can boost happiness and productivity
I think it means if you assume lunchtime is part of work or not. I'm in the UK, every job I've had is 9-5 or 9:30-5:30, with a 1 hour lunch break.
