mackal··on Linux gaming is faster because Windows APIs are becoming Linux kernel features
Esync was the other one. Basically either of those enabled (honestly probably both were) and it didn't hit a corner case with issues, NTSYNC is basically no benefit. (I personally would rather use NTSYNC)
mackal··on Googlebook
no specs given. COOL.
mackal··on Sega mistakenly reveals sales numbers of popular games
Those numbers are for both original and remaster.
mackal··on Some __nonstring__ Turbulence
Gentoo also has a tracker [1] for GCC 15 issues that they've been working on as well. (Note: GCC 15 is masked in Gentoo so you have to go out of your way to install it)

mackal··on CRLF is obsolete and should be abolished
> massive SQLite fan, but this is giving me pause about using other software by the same author

Even if I wanted to contribute code to SQLite, I can't. I acknowledge the fact God doesn't exist, so he doesn't want my contributions :P

mackal··on July 2024 Update on Instability Reports on Intel Core 13th/14th Gen Desktop CPUs
Intel has always had randomly supported ECC on desktop CPUs. Sometimes it was just a few low end SKUs, sometimes higher end SKUs. 14th gen it appears i9s and i7s do, didn't check i5s, but i3s did not.
mackal··on Breaking Free from DRM: Hacking My Air Purifier
All of these sort of things are just based on hours used. It's like looking at your hot water heater warranty and replacing it when it's over (I live an an area where the PPM of the water is rather high and hot water heater warranties are basically calibrated for water like mine, so we do have to replace them on warranty expiration, most places you at least get a few years or double)
mackal··on Exploiting DNS response parsing on the Wii U
They fixed the easy to use exploits on the 3DS not too long ago after it had been discontinued and store shutdown etc

It wouldn't surprise me if Nintendo went back and fixed something that wouldn't make sense like this.

mackal··on Speeding up the Super Game Boy
I would recommend trying to clean them with some rubbing alcohol first, using abrasives will only work so many times
mackal··on Speeding up the Super Game Boy
You can also put the 72 pin connector in boiling water for like 30 mins, take it out and let it cool. That should reset the pins back to "factory condition"
mackal··on “Support for System V scripts now deprecated; will be removed in future release”
I think it all comes back to people being upset about the Ubuntu PulseAudio switch. Ubuntu did a bad job when they switched to PulseAudio and caused lots of issues. Lennart Poettering was lead dev for both projects and it's weird how much the anti-systemd crowd get their panties in a bunch over him and also PA.
mackal··on OBS merges WebRTC support
Most of the c string usage appears to be just for libobs, which is a C library. They have a few constants that are perfectly fine and the rest of their string usage is actually std::string ...
mackal··on Available Today: Windows Dev Kit 2023 a.k.a. Project Volterra
Secure boot is going to be forced on.
mackal··on Cork is making a comeback
Just to make sure I increase knowledge, cork taint is a very specific thing, it's from a chemical called TCA (2,4,6-trichloroanisole) not just something corks do.
mackal··on Cork is making a comeback
I actually would rather synthetic or screw tops, but I'm mostly into whisk(e)y not wine. Corks can fail way more than other options. I do like a nice cork pop though.

Plus cork taint is no fun (yes, that happens with whiskey too, it's a myth it can't)

Also another down side of spirits being capped with a cork is that at higher ABVs they can slowly disolve the cork ... (Not sure when that starts to happen, but I believe 40% ABV can)

mackal··on SQLite: QEMU All over Again?
Why must I be tolerant towards the intolerant?
mackal··on SQLite: QEMU All over Again?
If I believed fairy tales were as real as he does religion, which is just fairy tales, you'd call me a nutcase too.
mackal··on Researcher finds a new method for recycling polystyrene
Someday I'll have something to do with my Warhammer sprues I guess
mackal··on System76 Lemur Pro Linux laptop with 14 hours of battery life
It should be noted that jmondi review is talking about the previous model. The one the article is talking about hasn't been out long enough for his post to be about lemp11. That doesn't mean it's changed enough that it's not still valid, but it was a different model of the Lemur Pro (likely lemp10)
mackal··on Little rant about GNOME's file manager (a.k.a. Nautilus)
I got told by a GNOME dev on reddit that I use my file browser wrong when I complained about lack of type-ahead search. I've switched to KDE since.
mackal··on Year 2038 problem is still alive and well
I was just trying to find that bug report to comment on it, should have just read the comments XD
mackal··on Intel completely disables AVX-512 on Alder Lake after all
I wonder if it's more just they had higher yields if they treated the AVX-512 bits as dead silicon :P
mackal··on Microsoft’s new Windows prompts try to stop people downloading Chrome
> Gaming on the other hand, is very much still mostly Windows only.

I game a lot, I haven't rebooted into Windows in well over a year. Luckily I don't really play games that require stupid DRM/anticheat (although, that is being worked on)

I would probably start playing Apex Legends again if they allowed EAC Linux support. Epic added support, the devs just need to support it -.-

mackal··on The Next ‘Lab Leak’
I think part of the push back from the lab leak theory is that it's often accompanied by lab created and leaked. I'm far from an expert, but from what I understand, there are 0 signs it was lab created. Now isolated from the wild in a lab and then leaked is still considered possible, but they just don't know.
mackal··on I moderate /r/kafka; people mistake it as a subreddit about kafka the product
/r/rift has similar issues (for the MMO, not the VR)
mackal··on Installing Windows and Linux into the same partition
I wonder if issue 3 is related to at least one of the other issues :P
mackal··on Installing Windows and Linux into the same partition
You kind of missed the point. Whether this is a good idea or not wasn't important, more of a "would it work"
mackal··on SARS–CoV–2 Spike Impairs DNA Damage Repair and Inhibits V(D)J Recombination
Not all of the vaccines are affected by the questions this paper raises. The mRNA vaccines aren't affected, only the adenovirus vector vaccines are.

If you're concerned about the spike protein because of this paper, it's still best to vaccinated. The 4 adenovirus vector vaccines will still give you less exposure, but taking one of the others will completely avoid it. (And if you get exposed after vaccination you'll have extremely minimal exposure to the spike protein compared to if you were unvaccinated)

mackal··on Covid-19: How the virus spreads among vaccinated people
The only person with a reality perception issue is you. Your posts are extremely ironic.
mackal··on Covid-19: How the virus spreads among vaccinated people
Incorporating this new information would lead to policies that support vaccine mandates and masking.

But then again, that's always been what I thought the policies should be since there was never any strong claims to vaccines preventing transmission.
