mthwsjc_··on Ask HN: Could you share your personal blog here?
https://johnmathews.is I've been writing since 2016 and have covered a wider range of topics that I ever expected. Initially it was just somewhere to write about the the programming concepts I was trying to learn. It's become my personal archive of resources and notes.
mthwsjc_··on DS-Fusion: Artistic Typography via Discriminated and Stylized Diffusion
I see the code is marked as "coming soon" - would love to take a look at this when its ready. The results are beautiful.

mthwsjc_··on Vim After 15 Years (2017)

mthwsjc_··on Ask HN: Share your personal site
This is my blog that is morphing into a PKS/zettlekasten: https://johnmathews.is
mthwsjc_··on Dracula Theme – A dark theme for many different apps
so cold!
mthwsjc_··on Ask HN: Those who quit their jobs without anything planned. How did it go?
It went very well - much better than expected.

My wife was enthusiastic about it and gave me the confidence to quit. Until then I'd been looking to get the transition locked in before quitting, which wasn't happening and probably never would have. At the time I was working in corporate finance and my first child had just been born.

I think the added pressure of being scared or uncomfortable gives you a huge edge when learning new skills, taking calculated risks and trying new things, and working super hard. Working hard in a grind or dead-end is sole destroying (I think), working harder on something you chose, with tangible personal benefits is exhilarating. My career took a new direction and a much steeper upwards trajectory.

That was 3 years ago. I've become a freelance data-scientist, working remotely in a new country, with a much higher quality of life.

I wrote a couple of blog posts at the time reflecting on corporate life in London with a young family. https://johnmathews.is/corporate.html, https://johnmathews.is/london.html

mthwsjc_··on The Mom Test – How to talk to customers
you are welcome :)
mthwsjc_··on The Mom Test – How to talk to customers
It's a great book, I really enjoyed it. I made some concise notes on each chapter on my blog https://johnmathews.is/mom-test.html
mthwsjc_··on Ledger of Harms
Why is this being called a ledger? Is it a special kind of list?
mthwsjc_··on Casio SK-1
what is 'circuit bending'? And if it is so terrible why have blur, beck, et al all used it?
mthwsjc_··on Building my own web analytics tool
I haven't. The main motivation was to see if I could build an analytics tool, it wasn't really about getting better analytics. Though it was interesting to compare the different tools.
mthwsjc_··on Building my own web analytics tool
yes. server-side must be the most accurate, but I'd still want a good way to filter out bots. for a site with a technical audience any general client side solution is too prone to blocking.
mthwsjc_··on Building my own web analytics tool
cool! how did you do it? what was your approach?
mthwsjc_··on Building my own web analytics tool
It should be loading just fine, though it is slow at the moment. The good news is that the HN wave didn't cause any errors or break anything, the bad news is that the response time quadrupled and I'm not sure why yet.
mthwsjc_··on Angband 4.2.2: A free, single-player roguelike dungeon exploration game
I played this ~23 years ago. I'm amazed to see it!
mthwsjc_··on Analysis of blood markers predicts human lifespan limit
I haven't read the complete paper, only the abstract, but it's fascinating to me that the authors find a limit of 120 to 150 years.

I remember reading in Genesis (first book of the bible) that the maximum age was limited to 120 years (chapter 6, verse 3).

mthwsjc_··on Ask HN: Dotfiles Management Tools?
chezmoi [1] looks like a tool for power-users. I'll give it a try and see how it goes. It seems to be more capable (and more complex) than dotbot [2]

mthwsjc_··on Cloudflare Pages is now Generally Available
Reading the comments is making me much more interested in Netlify, which I didn't know about. I've been hosting a static site using github pages, and Cloudflare pages looks really interesting.
mthwsjc_··on Why is it so hard to see code from 5 minutes ago?
vim has a very versatile undo function, including undo the last n minutes/hours/days of edits. it also has undo branches. e.g. `:earlier 5m`
mthwsjc_··on I Still Use RSS
> GitHub allows you to add an activity feed of your followed accounts/organisations by clicking the feed icon at the bottom of your account page. - wow!
mthwsjc_··on Show HN: PipPip.email – Write emails and send them years later
Thanks. I guess at the beginning it requires a bit of trust to create a message with a send date 10 years from now. PipPip is a business, and we want to stay alive just as much as our customers want us to, if not more...
mthwsjc_··on My robotic basketball hoop won't let you miss [video]

mthwsjc_··on How I'm able to take notes in mathematics lectures using LaTeX and Vim
people often map `jk` or `jj`, or the key to the left of `1` to Esc. I use `jk`.
