mvkel··on Moving our warehouse off DuckDB
This reminds me so much of when we would bring a new marketing leader and they would plant their flag by nuking all of the existing marketing automation processes to bring in theirs, with no net impact on the business. Bike shedding.
mvkel··on We halved DNS build delay and cut memory use by 85%
412M domains registered worldwide

700 changes per second implies 15% of all domains are changing daily, which is almost certainly not the case.

mvkel··on Show HN: HackerBooks – HackerTube, but for books mentioned on HN
This is absolutely fantastic and a much more worthwhile resource than hackertube, which feels more like a graveyard of bygone thinking.
mvkel··on The first wired XR glasses powered by Android XR
Blinking at a screen 1cm from one's eyeballs feels pretty damn dystopian.
mvkel··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
we're back to celebrating the pursuit of thinner and lighter again? Things really have fallen off.
mvkel··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
Similar to the "hole drilled through the kitchen table" problem of the HomeView ad, seeing the hands/arms floating in to touch the screen immediately makes me imagine the impossible ergonomics of reaching across a keyboard to touch a screen.

Steve would agree: "We've done tons of user tests on this, and it turns out it doesn't work. Touch surfaces don't want to be vertical. It gives great demo, but after a short period of time you start to fatigue, and after an extended period of time, your arm wants to fall off. It doesn't work. It's ergonomically terrible."

It's like having a remote control to read your kindle that's sitting on a stand 2 feet away (which, coincidentally, Amazon just announced).

Apparently the Ternus era of Apple is focusing on whether something can be built, not whether it should be released.

mvkel··on Behind the scenes at the NeXT Computer office
> By 1991 only 50,000 NeXTcubes had been sold. One of these, however, was used by Tim Berners Lee to create the first web browser and server.

Is it even possible to overstate the impact that Jobs has had on the world?

mvkel··on Apple Music 404 Not Found
What part of Ternus, the individual, has evoked any sense of whimsy?

The company, usually, reflects the temperament of the ceo. We had whimsy because Jobs was whimsical, not because Apple was per se

mvkel··on It's still ok to enjoy programming
Wild to see a headline like this on HN and have it be completely expected.
mvkel··on Superlite: A Faster Alternatie to Superpowers
superpowers was an important set of tools in q1 2026; no longer needed now
mvkel··on Tesla 'Cannot Guarantee' Roadster Reservation Holders Will Ever Get a Car
I don't think any spacex engineer would agree. "Hey, instead of making this rocket go to mars, can you make this car do a kickflip?"
mvkel··on Tesla 'Cannot Guarantee' Roadster Reservation Holders Will Ever Get a Car
I maintain that the entire event was to create a trail of evidence that justifies merging Tesla and SpaceX. No car will ever ship.

You can hear it in the voices of the creators, when they're giving an overview of the car to MotorWeek and other car media outlets. 99% focused on the rocket and battery tech/innovation, almost zero about the actual driving characteristics of the car, or that it -is- a car. Seems more like a rolling marketing mule.

mvkel··on Websites are closing their doors to AI agents
Most content has been behind a paywall / login wall for years
mvkel··on Tesla Roadster
I mean, this is something we want to encourage. Everyone always likes to quote fiduciary duty ad nauseum. Here is a public company flying (lol) in the face of that in the spirit of, well, fun.
mvkel··on Apple HomeView
With all the fighting over a single shared device, they should invent a form factor that fits in your pocket.
mvkel··on AI Models Can Provably Hide Arbitrary Capabilities
Frontier AI co warns that their model is super dangerous and needs more safeguards because it can break out on its own.

Model can't actually break out on its own.

Frontier AI co manually codes in one-off helpers for the model to break out "on rails."

"See? We told you it was super dangerous."

mvkel··on `123456' password used in Danish CPR data breach
> According to the hacker, access was initially obtained using a leaked password belonging to a former employee of a small Danish company.

So the password could have been 32 alphanumerics with special characters and there still would have been a breach.

The password was not the problem here.

mvkel··on Find the flattest route between any two points in SF
Absolutely love the live profile updating when you swipe from flatter to shorter.
mvkel··on I quit OpenAI because its culture is broken
This is a state-sponsored global phenomenon, not a national one
mvkel··on Show HN: Giving Opus 5.5 a simulated paint canvas
This is absolutely fantastic. I have been an amateur painter for 20 years and have always wanted to explore new techniques without burning a canvas. This will derisk it and teach me some things!
mvkel··on The Forgetful CPU (Linux on M4)
Define big. They're one of the biggest companies in history. You're saying that if they appealed to 1% of the market that already uses Macs... what? And then they have to support these users?
mvkel··on Dots: Always-on agents
Would you rather work with a team that is hit or miss, but has moments of brilliance, or predictably, consistently bad?
mvkel··on Dots: Always-on agents
I'd rather use the best possible model available than permanently relegate my work to an inferior one because it's "open"
mvkel··on Dots: Always-on agents
My biggest frustration with the frontier AI companies isn't what they're announcing, but that the announced-thing that exists ~6 months later is severely nerfed to reduce compute spend. It doesn't resemble the demo in any way. For example, this was what the 4o voice capability sounded like in 2024(!) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vgYi3Wr7v_g. What exists today pales in comparison.
mvkel··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
Napa used to be covered in peach orchards until it became clear that grapes were much more profitable. The trees were cleared to make way for vineyards.

The next profitable use of land will show itself soon enough.

mvkel··on The problem is not AI code, but not knowing about system architecture or intent
I'm not convinced that this matters anymore either. Knowing architecture was a vibe coding strength about three months ago. The modern models seem to handle it very well.
mvkel··on AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible
This is barely prompting 101. Author is essentially saying "instead of asking it to just make a poster, ask it to make a poster in [aesthetic]."

This has nothing to do with design. Is bauhaus the best aesthetic choice for a spring fayre? Why or why not?

mvkel··on AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible
Like HDR photos of the mid-2000s, these too shall pass.
mvkel··on Minimal Phone 2
I want minimal in size, not capability
mvkel··on Fable 5.1 Solves the Cyphral Distich, a 370-year-old cipher
More proof that it's not that a human -can't- do it, it's just that no human would dedicate their entire lifetime to solving this niche challenge.
