nlarion··on A misalignment of AI in mathematics
I saw the most recent fireship video and I've biased my opinion already on the topic. But I was biased even before that having been a human. To the point: this is a knee jerk reaction to AI entering mathematics. AND more importantly openai just did I mathematics dirty, true or false the perception is there. I completely understand the gripe, I'm a dev so welcome to the shitshow. I think the better more pragmatic approach is to embrace our ai overloads and reach far beyond your grasp at the strange and weird corners of thought and tame it with ai. These guys are basically chimps being handed an ak47, use it.

nlarion··on Are we offloading too much of our thinking to AI?
I appreciate the distinction between being the orchestrator in a complex prompt and completely handing over the reigns... but insofaras what people should or shouldn't do is irrelevant. What people will do is important, and they _will_ do everything. Some will offload as much as possible to AI others none at all. A better question in my mind is to ask what happens on a long enough timeline where letting AI take the wheel becomes easy/free/frictionless? To me that seems like some people will become full NPCs with AR glasses making all the decisions for them. Others maybe like the skroderoders from a fire upon the deep will have to buffer before talking because so much of their knowledge is stored in some ai they need to access first. Anyway, I appreciate people who think about these things, but it just doesn't matter. People will do the worst thing imaginable with AI, and letting it run your life is certainly one of them.

nlarion··on Landmark L.A. jury verdict finds Instagram, YouTube were designed to addict kids
Yet, I know many people who've done cocaine that are in other respects law abiding citizens. Making unjust laws makes us all criminals. The government cannot protect people from themselves, no one can. The best we can do is try to educate, and we can't even seem do that. Good luck out there buddy.

Yeah it's too bad there aren't any tools you can use to block any content at your home YOU personally deem irresponsible /s. Im not sure what your argument is here. If it's for regulation then please do some reading on regulatory capture before you hand over your ID card while logging in to respond to my comment
nlarion··on Meta and YouTube found negligent in landmark social media addiction case
There is no personal responsibility left in America. I have a child. It's my job to teach him and watch what he watches and does. I guess I am the only one who thinks this way. Good luck having the parental government raise your child. Parody: I let my child have cocaine and now they're addicted!!!!! Hilarious.
nlarion··on Neurons outside the brain
Interesting article, Douglas Hofstadter's book https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Am_a_Strange_Loop takes it a step further and says that parts of our consciousness/soul lives outside of ourselves and in the minds and brains of others. Since one can generally guess how person you know would respond in a given situation, such as how a spouse might be able to know exactly what their spouse would say/do, and in that sense our "souls" are distributed. It's a bit more nuanced than that, but I think that gets the point across of how parts of ourselves live in others.

nlarion··on Ask HN: What would you spend your time working on if you didn't need money?
Stopping climate change, and helping homeless would be at the top of my list, and if those are not up your alley space exploration and AGI seem fun.

For bonus points, you could work on not making us poor folk feel bad for having to work a 9-5! ;)

The main argument of this article seems to fall into the counterfactual fallacy category. Even if MOND has problems and ends up being wrong, that doesn't make dark matter exist.
nlarion··on Ask HN: What are some of the best documentaries you've seen?
Excellent film, to me, it perfectly describes the relationship between the corporate media and politicians in the US. That being said, this film is 25+ years old, and while still very relevant (and great) it generally leaves me feeling apathetic.

Groan... All I can think of is the kids in the hall episode when they make fun of "god is dead." Sure, god is dead (shrug emoji). But to think that progress is also dead, takes a bit more than an obscure quote to convince me. WWII could be considered the genesis of the nuclear age, which is hard to imagine not being "progress". Lately I've been thinking the exact opposite that war drives progress. Maybe I'm not picking up whatever this guy is on about, but it makes no sense to me. maybe someone will enlighten me. *edit spelling
