The problem is that people don't have 100TB of spare storage to hoard everything they want local. It's obvious that you should be hoarding them all.

fyi: filesystems have max path length/byte count limits, and yt-dlp can exceed that(e.g. "/var/home/username/Documents/Videos/YouTube/Five-reasons-you-want-powdered-detergents-for-your-dishwasher-fourth-one-surprises-you.mp4.part.012" > $THE_MAX_LEN). If this happens, it throws a Python `[Errno 36] File name too long` error and yt-dlp gives up.

This can be mitigated by adding `-o "%(title).150B [%(id)s].%(ext)s" ` to command line, which trims filenames to 150 bytes max. There are other options like --trim-filenames, but yt-dlp don't apply those to the interim part files and that triggers the failure anyway. The relevant issue has been reported on GH years ago and closed by the maintaining author with no PR from me(hey).

I don't think this ChatGPT's interpretation was necessarily wrong, given the prompt "Image of a middle aged man with half blond and grey hair". Maybe it should have asked back for clarification but that's it.

This to me as if someone is complaining for a basket full of extremely thin sliced fried potatoes for an order of "chips", rather than like wood and metalworking scraps.

Shouldn't it be politically problematic to say a woman looking for pornography has reasons to be troubled, in a democratic and secular state?

Assuming, you had cues for the gender & intent of the author, which I don't, but otherwise it's even more horrible to think about.

I think that particular one would be a prompting problem. Instagrammers and anime artists do left-right two-tone dyes all the time, so left-right two-tone rather than meshed gray blonde would be a reasonable interpretation of "half blond and grey hair" based on representations on Internet collected data.

I don't think that's true. It's actually my layperson pet peeve that none of hype humanoids have the right anatomy to be a humanoid, most of them are bipedal dogs.

IIRC at least one of the two other displays optionally take turn-by-turn remote guidances from the nav. So it can easily have a time data type added to that data, and they didn't. Though, all I researched for was for an outdated model of a car, and it seems one of three desynched clocks appear to be not be present anymore, and the desynced clock count must have gone down by one, unless they compensated for the loss by adding one.

It's in Japanese school textbooks. I don't remember if it was in art or world history class, but a lot of people have seen it and/or had to be able to fill it in the blanks from multiple choices. It's also a memorable work of art, so it's famous to those Japanese and terminally online. I agree that this can be a bit more obvious, though.

The last one refilling detergent is a parody of The Milkmaid by Johannes Vermeer; everyone has seen it on textbooks and it has become a meme template on Japanese Twitter in recent years.

That small display on top of aircon vents is called Multi Function Display and it's its own thing, IIRC getting information from CAN bus from supoorted nav units. If that one is dropping messages, maybe it's a grounding or a harness issue?
numpad0··on Why are Soviet math textbooks so hardcore in comparison to US textbooks? (2017)
I really think there is a subtle in-between line in the parent comment that trying to educate idiots must be counterproductive, beyond being just difficult or ineffective.

To me, it seems US is emotionally invested and being stubborn with the idea that natural selection and power concentration is key to competency, and universal measures are risk factors for the all-important elimination processes, despite there being ample proofs that that is not even a sane line of thinking and distribution of most things just keeps making huge returns.

Otherwise, let's assume the bottom 50% actually can't be educated, is it waste of whose time or resources to try?

numpad0··on Jailbreaking my car's navigation system just so I can change the time
Isn't it because the nav feature is market specific? People generally don't seem to like nav software brought in from different continents, across the planet.

I've heard that some Subaru models have 3 clocks in the view of the driver, all on the CAN bus, one being the nav and another being a remote display for the nav, and one that's just there, of which none sync to each others. I've looked up how it happened, and discovered that to just to add insult to injury, at least one uses a uC that has RTC feature but no XTAL pin for 32.768kHz or one of any sane base 2 divisions and uses CPU clock of 15MHz or something for it, so it just drifts away.

I don't understand how Subaru stays in the business. Just how. It's a 4 digit time. Just broadcast it on CAN. Why not.

Also: a lot of these older, completely rectangular sat nav units actually follow what is colloqially known as "2DIN" standards. (cheap import Amazon)Aftermarket units are available and those can be swapped in with just a bit of work. That's what most people do when they have issues with the stock unit installed for their markets.

Looks like I was simply wrong with assumption that GaN could only emit blues and there are plenty of efforts made for green and red GaN LEDs with such methods as Eu doping as well as some InGaN and AlGaN structures. That makes it not pure GaN based, but there is no such things as undoped semiconductors anyway. I believe QDs are not usually made out of GaN and it also doesn't seem to be in line with the wordings used. Your theory of this being based on multiple LED sounds likely, yeah.

numpad0··on Why are Soviet math textbooks so hardcore in comparison to US textbooks? (2017)
that's a bit too delulu... That's just your sampling bias. Of course a media predominantly feature contents in US English gives you impression that most things are happening in the US.

There are innovations and discoveries made and exploited everywhere. How much things seem to be going on relative to your cognitive capacity has not much to do with the reality.

Denying positive ROI for non-Chinese labs, destroying AI industrial base of others, while allowing NVIDIA to profit?

OpenAI had been miniaturizing GPT models as far back as GPT-4o era, but Chinese free-beer models that run on 16GB consumer GPUs can handle the vast majority of LLM use cases, and now they have no options but to attempt development of actual superintelligence that can cure cancer or solve the P=NP question just to differentiate against free-beer alternatives. It's clear what China is trying to achieve.

numpad0··on Seoul Viosys begins production of rare-earth-free white light emitter
IIRC/IIUC, GaN could only deal with UV or at most deep-ish blue, for both input and output, due to bandgap or whatever quantum reasons I don't understand. To create white light from light emitted by a GaN device, it needs to be downconverted into visible range by use of either phosphorous materials or a nanoparticle resembling them that are activated by blue light and emit its own light. On most white LEDs, this is done by that yellow goop of plastic material dabbed on top of blue LEDs.

Could this be like nanostructure based? Like nanoscale etching that messes with the light, created on top of UV LEDs?

Why would those content stop getting made? A lot of hardcore tech YouTubers are university lecturers. Chinese fried rice stalls on TikTok makes living in selling the rice. Japanese anime keeps getting made and aired.

I think there might be a lesson learned from the era of attention economy and also a potential explanation as to what advertiser friendliness was about - the attention economy did not graduate from being a surplus market. Advertisers had no incentives to subsidize the waste byproducts of fried rice stall, but the system was too deeply molded for them. The amount of standalone contents that are native to social media are tiny.

Anyway, I just don't think the contents that are made because of a social feed are the ones that weren't worth much even on social media.

numpad0··on Bidirectional charging during grid outages
So they always had it, just disabled in software?
numpad0··on Bidirectional charging during grid outages
V2H was popular among Japanese Nissan Leaf owners and there were tons of Leafs on cinderblocks with dead batteries used to milk incentives sold on used market for like $1k with 10 mi on the meter. Tiny household sellers are credited for sales for generosity, but apparently often just a noise that needs to be compensated by increasing power output at power plants to then just burn off. Great idea on paper, often not so much in practice.
numpad0··on Bidirectional charging during grid outages
Batteries are for load shifting between day and night and for short term backups. Yes, 7+ days of outages do require means of replenishing the battery, whether it's from a diesel unit or a solar. That's not a battery cost problem.
numpad0··on Bidirectional charging during grid outages
Most Tesla models don't support bidirectional because they had free Supercharging, and also probably because having your car not full at all times is not always the best experience. Other brands like Nissan had always supported V2H and in fact it has always been a selling point of OG leaf that it could double as the Powerwall equivalent since back in 2012.

Most V2H systems don't support zero-interrupt automatic transition because it has no means to know if the perceived grid outage is accidental or intentional, and if intentional, trying to back it up could injure/kill electrician who commanded it. But if the system is operating off-grid, I think those can be configured to be always uninterruptible.

numpad0··on Japan's trains are great. Why is booking one so hard?
JNR passenger services divisions were broken up into: JR Hokkaido, East, Tokai/Central, West, Shikoku, and Kyushu. Of those:

  - JR East took the whole east half of Honshu from southernmost end of Tokyo area all the way to Aomori.
  - JR Tokai aka Central got just Nagoya area + later the entirety of the Tokaido Shinkansen, Tokyo to Osaka.
  - JR West got the whole Osaka area and to the west of Honshu.
  - JR Hokkaido, JR Shikoku, JR Kyushu got one giant island to themselves each.
This means Tohoku Shinkansen rails and services going from Tokyo to north is on JRE rather than under Tokai/Central. And the Smart EX system mentioned in GP is a service offered by Tokai/Central, so they don't do JRE trains. uhhh same JR different company. Except when the system works. Then they are happy to issue any tickets they can. Bureaucracy!
