pixelpoet··on MS Paint Remote Code Execution Vulnerability
If MS knew it would drive people to actually use their app store, they would have created the CVE themselves.
pixelpoet··on Nvidia RTX Spark encrypted firmware slows inference speed to 35% on Linux
100% agreed, and people saying they need a laptop are missing the point; I wasn't saying don't use laptops, either.

The simple point I'm always trying to make is that area vs volume is a fundamental physical difference regarding cooling, which is critical for high performance applications (that's why they're considering an RTX Spark in the first place, right?).

There's so much more I could say about my Strix Halo machine, which fits in the palm of my hand and I have a wonderful portable screen and keyboard+touchpad (and only cost me 2k with 128 GB fast memory, idles at 4w, amazing 32 thread Zen 5 CPU with AVX-512, ...), but it's either preaching to the choir or pissing against the wind.

I have been saying this for years, and the answer hits a nerve that gets you downvoted into oblivion: people prefer the aesthetics of laptops, simple as that. They will absolutely go to the grave arguing that they need the mobility etc, then just leave it plugged in. They simply prefer how laptops look, and they absolutely hate it when someone dares say it.
pixelpoet··on Serbia just elected the world's brainiest parliament
The current president of Romania, Nicușor Dan, is apparently an exceptional mathematician[0] and quite useless as a politician.

pixelpoet··on Growing Trees
Nice to see another article from Mr Arion Render, always a pleasure. And of course posted by ibobev, always worth watching his HN submissions.
pixelpoet··on EA is shutting down BioWare
Yes, I heard about that too! I really hope he does at least one more truly great Ultima, and he can name his price as long as it really is a proper spiritual Ultima 7 / Ultima Online successor.
pixelpoet··on EA is shutting down BioWare
I got married in Ultima 7.
pixelpoet··on Talk like Paul Dirac – fewer words is better
Dirac would never make that less vs fewer mistake.
pixelpoet··on Someone on Torrent Sites Kept Fucking with My Sonarr
Brevity is the sole of wit.
pixelpoet··on The Double Headed Stack Allocator
The so-called "magic ring buffer": https://fgiesen.wordpress.com/2012/07/21/the-magic-ring-buff...
pixelpoet··on Tiny Little Office
Unfortunately "literal" has come to mean "metaphorical" and descriptivists bully everyone into accepting this (ironically its own form of prescriptivism).
pixelpoet··on Intel D270 GPU AI Accelerator–Up to 480 GB LPDDR5X
VRAM isn't a type of memory, it's just RAM used for the GPU. So this LPDDR5 is VRAM, just like it can be with my Strix Halo machine.
pixelpoet··on 3rd Yandex Cloud Data Center Was Hit
Just neighbours, otherwise people might draw awkward comparisons to certain other warmongering nations.
pixelpoet··on Show HN: Quake ported to safe Rust, playable in browser
It was smooth on a 90 MHz Pentium1 from 1996
pixelpoet··on Show HN: Quake ported to safe Rust, playable in browser
The port to Rust was superfluous though, could've gone directly from C to wasm. But then you miss out being able to say Rust Rust Rust...
pixelpoet··on The Mathocalypse
It's "bury the lede" BTW
pixelpoet··on I see you 4Kb procedural graphics
I've seen this, it's basically gaussian splatting, well executed and compressed; what interests me more is... is it really you, Skaven of Future Crew?! :O
pixelpoet··on Watson Jr. memo about CDC 6600 (1963)
Free rein*
pixelpoet··on Probing picosecond depairing currents in type-II superconductors
I use mathematical jargon all the time, but I gotta admit, getting major Turbo Encabulator[0] vibes here :D

pixelpoet··on A Short History of the Information Age
> They showed that light intensity in the fiber would drop only 99 percent over one kilometer.

Well, at least we know it's not LLM written.

pixelpoet··on Black Holes or Black Hole Stars? Astronomers Spar over 'Little Red Dots'
Sadly, those won't come.
pixelpoet··on Subnormal floating-point numbers are expensive on Intel processors
That's what I mean though- in the Core 2 Duo vs K8 / Athlon days, Intel was much slower for denormals and subnormals than AMD. I'm not sure why but I thought this was common knowledge.
pixelpoet··on Subnormal floating-point numbers are expensive on Intel processors
This has been the case since a zillion years, since the Core 2 Duo days at minimum.
pixelpoet··on South Africa is at risk of becoming a mafia state
I grew up in South Africa, and there was this classic newspaper cartoon back in the day: a kid goes to his dad and says "Dad, I want to become a criminal!" and the dad asks, "Government or private sector?"
pixelpoet··on An atlas of periodic solutions to the three-body problem
Most of them are extremely unstable, which is what the Morse number encodes - the number of directions you can roll down doing action minimisation. I don't think any N-body choreographies can exist in nature, because it requires point masses, exactly equal masses, Newtonian gravity etc.

BTW, I've wondered if it's possible to have N-body choreographies in general relativity; maybe some brave person can explore that :)

pixelpoet··on An atlas of periodic solutions to the three-body problem
I have something similar at https://gravitoy.xyz

With it I have discovered up to 11-dimensional choreographies, see https://lycium.github.io/hyperchoreography/ and code at https://github.com/lycium/hyperchoreography/

Exposition video: https://youtube.com/watch?v=sIfff10hYZA

Example rendered output from Gravitoy (not of a choreography though): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N3BwCoiwsGk

Looks like I need to update my catalogue to take into account the many different 2D choreographies from the references on this site!

pixelpoet··on Bespoke: A programming language for people who say please
Spelt, not spelled; tisk tisk ;)

I love everything about this!

pixelpoet··on Bespoke: A programming language for people who say please
Hear, hear! I should very much like to see the Linux kernel adopt Bespoke instead of that terribly uncouth Rust manner of speaking, like a mouth full of nails.
pixelpoet··on Methods for Random Gradients (2024)
The difficult part is making those beautiful colour palettes.
pixelpoet··on South African diamond mines are closing due to weak sales and lab-grown stones
You definitely don't want to rock the boat and undermine the diamond industry, that much is crystal clear.
