randunel··on Safari introduces Adaptive Dark Mode in 27.3
> Effects like masks and mix-blend-mode can create undesirable results on an element whose colors have been transformed, so in some cases Adaptive Dark Mode turns such effects off

This is how you get designers to work around your browser's limitations. "This CSS won't work for Safari users with dark mode on, so let's use this combination of javascript frameworks instead"

Thank you for this! I agree, but I still don't see the difference between a ledger and a relational DB when both write "Bob withdrew $20". Maybe I'm a bit thick.

You're right that I assumed there would only be one database or one ledger.

I don't see the difference between a ledger (possibly with a unique sequence enforcement) which would take the balance to a negative number, and a mutable row in a relational database with optimistic locking (same unique sequence enforcing). Would you mind helping me out, how would a ledger work better to prevent a negative balance, given that the enforcement isn't specific to ledgers and can be used in relational DBs? After all, both can go to negative balance by applying atomic subtractions, and both can prevent writes with the wrong sequence.

I'd like you to familiarise yourself with a legal and societal principle we use in civil law countries:

> de minimis non curat praetor

Which basically means judges are not interested in minor disputes. When you add the USA to the mix, China's actions pale in comparison to the point of being negligible, no point in discussing them given the scale of USA's warmongering, overseas and local crimes. "They never interfered in [...]" is an exaggeration which shows the lack of importance of China's crimes when compared to the USA's, that's all.

The "whataboutism" here isn't a deflection strategy, it shows the hypocrisy and correctly minimises the scale of China's actions in comparison to the hypocrites'.

randunel··on Gov.uk has replaced Stripe with Dutch provider Adyen
No point in marketing when you outright reject customers:

Thank you very much for the comprehensive feedback.

I have taken a look at the information you have provided and unfortunately, at this time, Adyen is only able to support businesses currently transacting more than €5M per year or businesses which are currently supported by a Plugin built by Adyen. The reason for this is so that we are able to provide the right level of support and resources to our merchants at the right stage of their company growth.

randunel··on EU to crack down on TikTok, Instagram's 'addictive design' targeting kids
I stopped using facebook around 2015-ish, when they stopped allowing sorting by date. Prior to this, hi5 and the likes also allwoed sorting by date. So no, not every online platform ever.
randunel··on EU to crack down on TikTok, Instagram's 'addictive design' targeting kids
Everything other than sorting the list of entities by a standard measurement unit (time, length, mass, temperature, amount) needs to be covered by this law.

The moment you add other entities to the list (e.g. ads inbetween posts), then it's also subject to the same restrictions.

randunel··on 10Gb/s Ethernet: what I did to get it working in my home
Crimping implies RJ45, so 1Gbps. You can't crimp SFP+.
randunel··on 10Gb/s Ethernet: what I did to get it working in my home
I can install 1Gbps using copper cables + RJ45 and household tools. I can't install 10Gbps using a $10 crimper.

Therefore, I have 1Gbps all through my house and 10Gbps between equipment next to the access point.

randunel··on We have a 99% email reputation, but Gmail disagrees
I have a really simple algorithm to reporting something as spam:

> Was this email solicited by me?

The author describes unsolicited emails and somehow misses the point that spam is a term for unsolicited emails.

The reminder email in your list sounds unsolicited, so I'd probably report that one as spam as well. I wasn't aware it was mandatory, probably because it's not where I live.

My transactional inboxes are mostly clean as a result. My "spam" inbox, however, is full of crap (the email I use to sign up to freemium services).

randunel··on Why the US Navy won't blast the Iranians and 'open' Strait of Hormuz
Americans sure love their war crimes! Indiscriminately killing civilians is how they've gotten past, present and future terrorist attacks. I can't imagine the parents of the children they keep on killing (or maiming, or otherwise) standing by and watching. People wouldn't necessarily need to wait for their country's army to do something when they've got nothing significant left to lose.
