rantingdemon··on Dutch governments builds alternative for Microsoft based on NixOS
Yeah I also wonder about going for NixOS for this. For servers maybe, but for user focussed desktops? The support requirements will be complicated.
rantingdemon··on NTSB issues investigative update on B-767 runway excursion accident in Miami
This was a discussion in the aviation subreddit too. I am also not an aviator, but just someone with an interest.

What the outcome of the discussion was that it depends on the culture and training of the organisation. It could be possible that it does happen like this 95% of the time with no crash in that specific organisation.

rantingdemon··on It takes 5 cloud services to hear my doorbell
OP stated it requires a user configurable chime. This is not a regular doorbell.
rantingdemon··on Codefloe Is a Professionally Hosted Public Git Forge
What makes this different than Codeberg?
rantingdemon··on Self hosted email continues to steeply decline
I would also be interested in self-hosting but have limited understanding of what would be required to ensure my email does not get flagged as spam.
rantingdemon··on The hardest working font in Manhattan (2025)
Very few of the images are loading for me.
rantingdemon··on Apple to increase spend with Broadcom to produce billions more U.S. chips
This seems to be paying lip service to creating a supply chain in the USA. These are not anything like Apple Silicon ARM chips, they are not even Wifi chips?
rantingdemon··on Automate Excel with Python: From manual grind to one-click workflow
This is just an advertisement for a book. And a terrible advertisement. No sample chapters to evaluate the book.
rantingdemon··on SQLite Is a Library of Congress Recommended Storage Format
Only where VBA is available. Not available for MacOs versions if I'm correct?
rantingdemon··on The Iran War Just Broke the Petrodollar

rantingdemon··on Artemis II crew see first glimpse of far side of Moon [video]
2 to 3 years is wildly optimistic. Of the 5 launches last year 3 were failures and it's not even close to be ready for humans yet.
rantingdemon··on Ubuntu now requires more RAM than Windows 11
Practically speaking most people would want a GUI though.
rantingdemon··on Apple discontinues the Mac Pro
Only really possible with the M1. If referring to Asahi.
rantingdemon··on TikTok is tracking you, even if you don't use the app
Thanks. I already am.
rantingdemon··on TikTok is tracking you, even if you don't use the app
Will Pi-hole with good blocking lists remediate this?
rantingdemon··on FBI couldn't get into WaPo reporter's iPhone because Lockdown Mode enabled
I'll bite. Why is it so terrible? I'm browsing this site right now on my phone and don't see the horror.
rantingdemon··on Deep dive into Turso, the “SQLite rewrite in Rust”
This is very shallow for a supposed deep dive.

I'm not ready to entertain Turso as an alternative to something that is as battle tested as Sqlite.

rantingdemon··on Hands-On Introduction to Unikernels
Thanks
rantingdemon··on Hands-On Introduction to Unikernels
I would like to follow the tutorial but it mentions a playground.

Am I missing something as I cannot find a link or instructions for the playground.

rantingdemon··on It's hard to justify Tahoe icons
Did you follow a guide to revert black?
rantingdemon··on Show HN: 22 GB of Hacker News in SQLite
Why do you say that?
rantingdemon··on WebAssembly: Yes, but for What?
I absolutely hate this state of affairs. Apps don't allow me to open multiple tabs, as an example.
rantingdemon··on Gmail to SQLite
Interesting tool. I'm trying it out now. I had to jump through some hoops in Google's admin panel that probably had me creating some OAuth org for my personal account...

It is now syncing my messages, but very slowly. Some Async magic could probably be cool :)

rantingdemon··on Lazarus Release 4.0
It is a pity that Lazarus and FPC seems to be so hard to deploy. It is of course an open source project, so its understandable.

Lazarus and FPC is a great project. Building GUI apps like with Lazarus does not have an easy alternative, from which I'm aware.

I have tried it now on my Mac, and I have to jump through some hoops to get it going. Again a pity, its a great option.

rantingdemon··on Microsoft cracking down people upgrading to Windows 11 on unsupported hardware
Perhaps the OP needs it for work?
rantingdemon··on La Basilica Di San Pietro
Not sure if its just me, but I cannot hear any audio.
rantingdemon··on The withering dream of a cheap American electric car
In South Africa as far as I know we are already building cars for export markets.

This being

- VW - Mercedes Benz - Ford - BMW

(I think there may be a couple more).

Point being is that there are already some plants in "Africa".

rantingdemon··on Python 3.13.0 Is Released
So simple, yet so effective.

Old Systems Admins like me have been following this simple rule for decades. It's the easiest way at scale.

rantingdemon··on Do U.S. ports need more automation?
Well not _last_ :).

South African ports ranks last, apparently.

rantingdemon··on Browser built-in bookmarking system is good enough (2024)
I would like to give Firefox a try. I currently use only Chrome/Edge/Safari. Let me check if it works in IOS.
