riffraff··on Cuban: Facebook knowingly runs AI deepfake scam ads; docs say $16B fraud revenue
For a while there was a deepfake scam in Italian in FB which looked like a TV news with well known journalists announcing everyone would get money for free using some crypto thingy, followed by am interview with the prime minister saying they looked into this and it was safe.

The level of carelessness was astonishing to me.

riffraff··on sshole
I didn't hate the writing even if it's AI, but I deeply disliked the animations. I don't know if that's LLM fatigue or not.
riffraff··on Basically no one is using AI agents for their DoorDash orders
I was dealing with a LLM help bot on a website where I had to upload some documents and asked the bot how to get through a step where I simply don't have the right things and it kept telling me I could sidestep that (but I could not) or upload the thing (which I told it I could not to begin with!).

It's not like the previous tree based bots were good but at least they had a path to speaking with a person.

I suspect nobody ever tried to use the bot.

Those came one or more years after Napster, when it was already wildly popular because it was the only tool that did that job.

Like calibre, I guess :)

riffraff··on Kalshi and its co-founders face felony charges for violating Utah gambling laws
"novelty betting" has been around for a very long time.

Gambling has to do with putting money in a proposition, not with sports. "I bet you I can drink two points before you" is not a financial statement.

Good thing I decided not to turn into a mollusk!
riffraff··on Through Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Patrick Stewart taught us the measure of a man
I think that's a very good insight, you're right.
riffraff··on Why Anthropic's filing crushed tech stocks
I'm in agreement with the general point but was big tech well liked in the early 2020s?

Facebook scandals had exploded already, Google had already long abandoned "don't be evil", nobody ever liked Microsoft, and I think sentiment towards Apple is somewhat unchanged.

riffraff··on Through Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Patrick Stewart taught us the measure of a man
I thought the title was a wink to people who knew of that episode, without the need to actually discuss it.
riffraff··on Through Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Patrick Stewart taught us the measure of a man
Others have said this, but "The Orville", once it goes past the first few "family guy"-esque episodes, is a fantastic Star Trek.

I enjoyed Strange New Worlds, but it has too many "weird" episodes.

riffraff··on Pompeii wardrobe found untouched since 79CE holds keepsakes, coins, and two mice
This is quite a detailed article, but as an Italian I feel one of the linked articles has a more evocative title: "the wardrobe of a woman who never came back".

As an aside, I got sniped into finding out why this insula is called "insula of the chaste lovers", given Pompei is quite known for sexual imagery. It's apparently because there's a house called ".. of the chaste lovers" because of a fresco where two lovers share an apparently chaste kiss

riffraff··on AlpineBSD
If that was the case, we wouldn't be using openssh, openssl, perl/python/ruby etc...

I'm a GPL person but that's not why Linux won over the BSDs.

riffraff··on Python's experimental JIT to be removed
Just FYI, basically the same story is common in European folklore, and there's a somewhat idiomatic "stone soup" concept in English

riffraff··on Early progress on accelerating drug development with Claude
Well, only if that's the bottleneck.

Consider commuting with a friend in the morning: if you get dressed and get out of the door in 5m instead of 10m, but then have to wait for me to come pick you up, and then we both sit in a car for 5m to get to the train, and then we sit on that for 50.. then your speed up doesn't really matter.

I don't know if this is the case for drug development but as GP said, we already have more designs than we can test.

riffraff··on New 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6
Same here. A part of me wants to get a new MBP but I really can't justify it.

Isn't trading always blocked? Whenever you would allow someone to build a complete Color it's better not to allow it, and whenever you also would it's only advantageous if your color is stronger than the other thus the other party should never agree.

Any other exchange becomes pointless as you won't be completing a color anyways.

riffraff··on Getting ready to operate GNU Taler in Germany
Private and anonymous are different but the digital euro proposal is for both things, it is supposed to be equivalent to cash but only for small sums.

I have no idea how that's supposed to work.

To be fair, a monster is scary so it fits. Malice in the middle perhaps would have been less confusing.
riffraff··on GitLab critical patch release
If catching "all" security issues becomes feasible then the balance tilts in favor of the projects vs the attackers.

Big malicious entities always had more investments in this than random open source projects.

riffraff··on The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable
> we really just need to get rid of beef

you don't even have to get rid of it, even consuming less beef has significant impacts.

riffraff··on The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable
> There is not a single KPI where the curve shows even the slightest sign of recovery

ozone, marine fish capture, tropical forest loss, and domesticated land are shown as below peak, aren't they?

riffraff··on The 1.5°C goal of the Paris Agreement is no longer viable
plastic straws have been banned for a different reason than fighting climate change: they were the vast majority of trash showing up on shorelines.

I am with you with wanting carbon taxes, but it's not like there's a single issue that can ever be tackled at a time.

riffraff··on Show HN: How random are you?
> The house called 3 of your 27 scored numbers: 11%.

> Blind guessing would average about 3.0 of them (11%).

Admittedly I gave up before the 30 threshold but I think I did well enough at "beating the house"

Edit: tried again, 14/118, which is 12%. Maybe it's because I'm typing, and that's easier to do that speaking up.

riffraff··on Programmable pigments: Photochromic nanoparticle inks for rewritable tattoos
depends on the bath, but they're generally understanding of foreigners with tattoos.
riffraff··on Type-safe HTML templating in Zig
There was a brief period where everyone and their dog implemented mustache[0] as a template system, but it died quickly because cross-language templating is not that useful in the end, you seldom need to switch host language but keep the templates.

riffraff··on Programmable pigments: Photochromic nanoparticle inks for rewritable tattoos
This is awesome and I hope it catches on, but the idea of "may be useful to people who want to conceal tattoos in some situations" seems far fetched, some make-up layer would probably be a simpler solution, wouldn't it?
