ryanhunt··on The Forgotten Art of the LAN Party (2023)
For those in Australia, there are regular LAN parties held in most cities still: https://dadlan.au/ (held monthly) and https://www.thebiglan.com/ (~5 a year).
ryanhunt··on Scientists solve the mystery of sea turtles' 'lost years'
Was there recently (Mon Repos in QLD, Australia), I recall them saying it was a 1 in 1000 survival rate [1, 2] which may explain why mothers are laying ~120 eggs in each clutch multiple times each season. If you head back to Mon Repos around this time of year (Feb through March) you're much more likely to see the eggs hatch.

Good news recently too, this season (2024/2025) has seen a record-breaking number of eggs being laid in Mon Repos[3]. Highly recommend anyone goes visit, pretty special.

ryanhunt··on Gilead shot prevents all HIV cases in trial
This is amazing, but surely I'm not the only one who is struck by the irony of a company called 'Gilead' who is trying to save the human race? (Handmaid's tale reference)
ryanhunt··on Asana S-1
Dumb question - but with all these tech IPOs, how does one get in/invest at IPO time without buying on the open market?
ryanhunt··on Hackers claim to have stolen Pirates of the Caribbean 5 and demand ransom
I bet the author, Jacob Kastrenakes, was well chuffed when he got to write a headline like that.
ryanhunt··on Ask HN: Did Ellentube rip-off YouTube?
Nice one, thanks!
ryanhunt··on Dropbox is in your Office
This is great news! Although I imagine this will complicate things for those organisations that block access to Dropbox :)
ryanhunt··on Dropbox is in your Office
1. Market reach, it's where the customers are. Compare the sheer number of apps that have native Dropbox integration, with those that have OneDrive. While it's far from scientific, nearly everyone I know has a Dropbox account - very few have a OneDrive account.

2. It makes their own OneDrive service seem even more competitive. Why pay for Dropbox when you can buy Office365 for about the same price and get unlimited storage?

ryanhunt··on 75-year study on what men require to live a happy life.
I fully expected this entire article to contain only 3 characters, ending in ex.
ryanhunt··on The World's First Laptop for Dogs
That's some wicked marketing right there, guaranteed social sharing - however they should have made it for cats. However, it feels a bit half-assed as I feel they didn't go far enough with the joke.
ryanhunt··on Jewish problems
sounds like a similar (although at least a little bit more achievable) to the "White Australia Policy" that was once one in place, where a language exam was given to 'undesirables' in a language that it was clear the person wishing to emigrate to Australia could not speak.

ryanhunt··on Facebook considering $3-4Bn buyout of Skype
it's not overly surprising considering the recent Facebook<-> Skype integration and Skype's expansion to the USA (new office in Brisbane, CA).

I'd say it's more like likely a 'strategic partnership' than a buy-out. Having said that though, they're both private companies, so it may not as straight forward as a normal 'merger'
