sam_lowry_··on Git for the US Code
It's the European law, inspired mostly by French, IIRC. Belgium has the same, for instance.
sam_lowry_··on Microsoft offers mass buyouts for roughly a quarter of its workforce
Buy, like they dud with Github.
sam_lowry_··on No signs of AI payoff outside the tech sector
I regularly see awfully wrong automatic translations on youtube in all kinds of videos.
sam_lowry_··on Why is AI generated language so hard to understand?
> Linguists are the first to explain that their job is to describe, not to prescribe.

Tell this to the Académie Française.

He meant tptacek, I guess.

Sometimes thought leaders make mistakes ;-)

sam_lowry_··on We should be more ambitious with the software we build
> https://github.com/BlueBlazin/lowpolyearth

Publishing screenshots and the README on GitHub but not the code is sneaky at best, deceiving at worst.

With all due respect to Dan Luu... the article starts with a quote by the pgrust guy from the cheating debacle covered just two days ago: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=50205816
sam_lowry_··on PHP Foundation 'under-funded' with one full-time staff member, director says
She says the full-time member is herself, and looking at her Linkedin (in/elizabethn) she isn't exactly the person who would patch PHP for the two CVEs.
sam_lowry_··on Your Phone Is About to Stop Being Yours: 70 Days Until Lockdown
The app my government pushes on everyone does not work with Developer Mode either.
sam_lowry_··on There isn't an easy exploit for this PHP vulnerability
Because the other part of "show me the code" quote is "talk is cheap".
sam_lowry_··on The foolishness of "natural language programming" (1978)
US institutions are on eMudhra certificates through inCommon, yeah.

AFAIU this particular chain is not compromised.

Show me the code.
sam_lowry_··on There isn't an easy exploit for this PHP vulnerability
Was it parroting and cargo-culting in an unfortunate chain of events?

I have more karma, and I wonder where are the hacked websites as well.
sam_lowry_··on Dutch National Cyber Security Center is Offline because it uses PHP
What platform hasn't had security issues?

Anyway.

CCB is overtly a marketing organization, not an IT security one.

IIRC they don't even host their own website, The Chancellery of the Prime Minister does it for them.

sam_lowry_··on Dutch National Cyber Security Center is Offline because it uses PHP
Also the Belgian Centre for Cybersecurity is down https://ccb.belgium.be/

Dark day for Drupal and Wordpress, heh

Is it a out MTA-STS or something else?

sam_lowry_··on Citroen revives the 2CV for an electric age
Also Renault 5 and Renault 4 seem to be selling quite well.
sam_lowry_··on Lobbying is corruption
Citizens should vote more often, Switzerland shows a good example, be we can go even further than that.

I don't get this "voting every 4-6 years" story in most past of the world. This leads either to the political apathy or to the riots, like it is now in France and in Belgium.

We have to have a habit of voting in order to be efficient at it. For the same reason, my spam filters are relaxed and every day I read a few spam messages that slip though, to stay alert of what the spam is, and how it changes over time.

sam_lowry_··on Programming Isn't Special
I guess the same can be said about plumbing and HVAC installations.

I think art is different from the rest in that it lost utilitarian value. In other words, Art is degenerative by definition.

Here are a couple counter-points that come to mind:

Linus explaining taste in code: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78Y17hAo96I

Fast inverse square root https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fast_inverse_square_root

Being a humble rank-and-file programmer I did produce pieces of code that I will be proud forever as well, e.g. this snippet to control the length of $PWD in bash that I still use almost unchanged 25 years later:

    # How many characters of the $PWD should be kept
    local pwdmaxlen=30
    # Indicator that there has been directory truncation:
    #trunc_symbol="<"
    local trunc_symbol="..."
    if [ ${#PWD} -gt $pwdmaxlen ]
    then
    local pwdoffset=$(( ${#PWD} - $pwdmaxlen ))
     newPWD="${trunc_symbol}${PWD:$pwdoffset:$pwdmaxlen}"
    else
     newPWD=${PWD}

> There would be no WW2 if not for Ribbentrop-Molotov pact.

I was taght in school that the reparations the Germany had to pay to the winers of WW1 were the cause of WW2.

Proof: Marshall plan after WW2.

sam_lowry_··on Protest against housing crisis in Spain

sam_lowry_··on September 2026: The world today, as seen by one Polish guy
> Defeat in WWI brought about Nazi Germany

Defeat of Germany in WWII was followed by Marshall plan exactly to avoid the ressentiment that nourished the Nazis.

> He's had attempts on his life made

That's a dubious claim. Nothing that we know for sure. I've seen him hinting at that and at the danger to his family in interviews, but who takes his word for it?

sam_lowry_··on September 2026: The world today, as seen by one Polish guy
> The decision to invade was Putin's, but the rationale goes much deeper and will outlast him

Not Russian either but also spent a lot of time out east.

Putin declared the war as a means of personal survival. The negotiations are possible only if he gets out of the way, and then, it's really important to make a Marshall plan for Russia because indeed lots of reputational damage has to be repaired by the "winners" in the Cold War.

> third of its size

Russia is about 28 times larger than Ukraine and 10x GDP.
