semiprivate··on The Door To The FISA Court Doesn't Even Have A Sign On It
And if they put a hand scanner on 1 other door then what? Having a sign that indicates where a court is, is not silly.
semiprivate··on Straws And Cups That Detect Date Rape Drugs

semiprivate··on A Simple, Comprehensive Overview of Javascript
Simple and Comprehensive? Aren't those opposites in this case?
semiprivate··on Twitter Bootstrap Now Powering 1% of The Web
Ok ok, first of all "The Web" and "our source code search engine" are completely different things and ya'll fell for some rather obvious trolling/crappy marketing talk.

Second of all, not liking bootstrap is like not liking martini shakers 'cos you don't have any martinis to shake.

Just because you don't have a use for a tool doesn't make the tool useless and clearly lots of people have martinis to shake.

This trolling and bickering is very non-hacker/non-productive and ya'll need to settle.

semiprivate··on Ask HN: Why isn't Scala as popular on the HN front page as Haskell or Go?
With Haskell and Go you feel like you're part of some elite hacker community. With Scala you just feel simultaneously relieved and torn that you can functionally program on the JVM.

Also, the JVM is not an exciting environment.

Edit Also, which of these feels the most like you're workin' for the man?

semiprivate··on Is This The Future of The Airline Website?
Maybe for the super rich, but the only way I'm switching off of kayak is if you bring me cheaper flights.

All I want from a travel booking site is cheaper flights.

semiprivate··on Leaked report shows high civilian death toll from CIA drone strikes
These drones make us terrorists. Never knowing if the next time you or your children go outside will be the time they get destroyed by a faceless, human-less, bomb slinging, heat sensing machine in the sky is fucking terror. We're fighting terror with terror.

No matter what happens, terror has won. We as a nation are fucking terrorists.

semiprivate··on FP vs. OO, from the trenches
I agree, being long-winded is no substitute for being substantive.

And, if you respect that man's uncommitted, unexplained opinion, then his article is a good starting point for further research that draws conclusion.

semiprivate··on FP vs. OO, from the trenches
That's not a real argument. You're essentially saying "respect because I said so."

The irony is your argument is just as flimsy and opinionated as everyone else's.

This article is devoid of content AND is written by a respected member of the community but neither of those things make it worth reading.

The great moral of the story here is, if you let the internet bother you, the internet will definitely bother you.

semiprivate··on Detroit Is Going Bankrupt, But Its Tech Community Is Going Strong
we're making it better...slowly but surely

That's a feeling not a measurement. Clearly economically it's getting worse. And emergency services seem to be getting worse. What exactly is getting better?

All I'm saying is that, especially in crisis, the truth and measurement are far better than emotion. What exactly is getting better?

semiprivate··on Replace Dropbox with BitTorrent Sync and a Raspberry Pi
The article is about setting up your own simple syncing service for non-mission-critical data like notes. I don't think you see the point 'cos:

    a) You didn't read the article.
    b) Tinkering with technology to do fun things is of no interest to you.
semiprivate··on Why I'm Returning Google Glass
While those are novel applications and would probably work well in a repair situation, those things would be better managed by software that alerted you when things like "inspection time had been exceeded" or if "pressures were out of range". Having to look at every pipe and piece manually to check it's stats is error prone at best.

"You mean we have all this stuff recorded and in a database, but I have to go look at it to get the info?"

semiprivate··on The Drone that Killed my Grandson
How are we still allowed to be a member of the UN? If these aren't war crimes then they're surely still crimes, just you know, not-war crimes.

What boggles my mind is how these countries allow the US to run drone strikes on their citizens. I mean, Yemen has a government and they're like, "Yeah sure, target and kill innocent people and blow cafes and shit up in our country. Cos you know, terrorism and all that."

semiprivate··on NeoCities can now handle two million web sites
NeoCities desperately needs a terms of service.
semiprivate··on Should I use a carousel?
I agree they can be annoying, but teaching that all and every use of carousels is devastating to your business is careless and wrong. All of these very profitable companies use carousels and probably laugh at the short-sightedness of this sentiment.

semiprivate··on The 10 Megabyte Manifesto
The 140 char limit has nothing to do with image hosting and you already touched on how URL shortners are toxic.
semiprivate··on Yelp Hipster Finder
This is actually a good way to figure out where to stay when visiting a city. Click tourist and avoid, click hipster and go there. Maybe go to the slightly less red areas for a more low key night. At least that's how you'd have fun if you were a 20-30 something in NYC.
semiprivate··on The 10 Megabyte Manifesto
Neocities needs a terms of service.
semiprivate··on Why Snowden Asked Visitors in Hong Kong to Refrigerate Their Phones
The real answer: he looked around the house and decided it was the best place. lots of metal, and a hum to drown out noise.

The NSA leak was important enough, we don't need to pretend like he's some kind of privacy McGuyver.

semiprivate··on Why Google Glass Will Fail
I don't think it'll fail. I think it's going to be a massive success for people already addicted to things like facebook, instagram and reddit. The thought of never having to miss some tiny thing to share online so you can amass a tiny bit more internet karma is too alluring to go un-utilized. The amount of 'check out what this person said at burger king' and 'look at this person dancing on the subway' videos is going to skyrocket.
semiprivate··on Why Google Glass Will Fail
Conspiracy theory time.

What if employers start making employees wear them and have the video retained indefinitely? So that everything you saw, said and did was recorded for your employer to watch.

If this video streams to any online account, what’s to stop an outside agency from getting their hands on it.

Personally, I think it's rather upsetting that the feature people always rave about the most is the one that quickest turns us into an even more voluntary surveillance state.

TLDR: we don't need damn cameras on our damn faces. I promise your life can be fulfilling with out them.

semiprivate··on Is it time to drop jQuery?
jQuery is a power tool not a crutch.
