snapplebobapple··on Budget offers $50B jolt to help Canada double its electricity grid
cultural misuse is code for "I don't like it because it might make something I like to do unprofitable, so I'm going to trick myself into a more palatable reason for hating this than that I am lazy and am afraid of change." Go read some history. Every time something begins to happen that changes the labour market so entrenched interests lose power and things get a lot more efficient you guys come out of the wood work and start moaning about "cultural misuse" or "inauthenticity". Basically insert nonsense here so that the person spouting the nonsense can keep lying to themselves about their real reasons for not wanting something.

Data centers are great and this concern over them is insane though. You should be more concerned about how the government is going to waste your money here, because they will, because they have for decades now and inefficient meddling is worse than effective meddling in most cases. For example, the bulk of this appears to be going into the clean electricity investment tax credit, which is a 15% refund on eligible capital costs that has some questionable requirements (like abiding by dumb prevailing wage laws rather than focusing on the correct thing, getting the project done well for as little expense as possible).
snapplebobapple··on Rosalind Franklin figured out DNA's helical structure before Watson and Crick
this all seems like wasted cycles to me. Why dont we just strike the name from common parlance after someth*ng falls off the frontier of science? The focus on caring about who figured it seems foolish vs figuring the next thing, especially when everybody is probably dead or has dementia by now.
snapplebobapple··on US voters roundly reject data centers in ballot measures
Thats the only good thing to come out of this. The rest of it really highlights how we acrewed up violating personal liberty with overly agressive zoning and other regulation.

Good thing everything on the lan side is fully patched all the time. God bless those vigilant smart device manufacturers, especially the tv guys

Meh, a strong reason to not retire to the south of france.
snapplebobapple··on Fair Use Benefits Everyone
This is a good sentiment but wrong idea. The natural state of the world is everyone copies everything. This is hugely beneficial once something is discovered/created. Copyright harms everyone after the fact because of this. Before the fact, credibly limiting copying (i.e. copyrights/patents) may increase discovery/creation. That makes the correct question what is the minimum copyright/patent to get the most increased output for the least cost in lost copying? The answer is a small fraction of current copyright, almost certainly. so there are many decades where fair use now matters when it shouldnt because no copyright should exist at the time fair use is contemplated
snapplebobapple··on French lawmakers approved a tax of €0.055 for every gigabyte of internet traffic
Where exactly do you see under regulation? Everywhere i look i see massive over regulation. If you mean under enforcement of antitruat law so obviously stupid oligopolies are rampant instead of shattered into hundreds of pieces, i guess i could agree with that but thats not regulation, thats destruction of the bad end product of capitalism so that the amazing middle of capitalism can thrive.

snapplebobapple··on Git for the US Code
It's slightly more complex though isn't? Because the actual problem is how to limit the reach of political power while still having an effective government.

snapplebobapple··on Elon Musk Just Gave Europe a Reason to Replace American Technology
I think there are a couple kinds of business success and the kind that Elon has had (driving technology decades forward in years to make stupid ideas highly profitable) across multiple different businesses should make every person highly critical of their own internal models when they disagree with his. This doesn't resolve him of responsibility but I would question responsibility for what exactly? He doesn't like killing people and he doesn't like a bunch of corrupt wankers enriching themselves by siphoning off funds earmarked for the war. He translated that into thinking the war should stop, which ends up being pro russian. I disagree with him. I think we should fund the Ukrainians for as long as they are willing to fight and hope that ends with Ukrainian marching in the streets of Moscow to end that threat to the western world for good. That doesnt' make him a criminal, it does loook like he did a few crappy things hiding behind his terms of service and lies, which just makes him more human.
snapplebobapple··on France needs to read my paper
imo, there should be maybe 3 zones and that's it: mixed use up to six stories (basically allows everything but regulates noise levels, chemical, etc outputs so you don't have pig farm/iron smelter levels of pollution/stink here. Obnoxious things light night clubs are allowed if they can limit their annoyance levels. Everything within the highly permissible zoning should be approved very fast, think a week at most, ideally a couple days). mixed use over six stories. This would allow everything in the previous zone but allow higher builds without rezoning and be fairly fast for approval. Then industrial zoning where you can build the stuff that can't keep itself within the pollution/noise/etc regulations of the first two (think pig farm, garbage dump, industrial factories).
snapplebobapple··on France needs to read my paper
Now apply your first statement to zoning and realize zoning in itself does the exact same thing (and also ruins a land value tax to some extent because zoning cuts off a huge swath of value due to potentially limiting land use from the most valuable use.)

To me zoning is the biggest unacknowledged flaw with a land use tax because, as an example, my land my be worth 1 million if it is limited to single family, or it may be worth 20 million if only my land is rezoned to build a high rise, or it may be worth 5 million if all the land is rezoned to allow highrises. I'm not convinced at all that the biggest problem or even the major problem is how we tax land, which could address a few marginal pieces of land, when literally all the land use is negatively affected by zoning. It feels a lot like complaining someone didn't trim their hedges when their house is on fire.

snapplebobapple··on No signs of AI payoff outside the tech sector
I think you are missing the other side of the coin where it is actually government regulations holding adoption back in many sectors. Ie you are only beginning to see benefit in driving now because regulation has been forced enough to change to let the pilot projects happen. The millions of drivers who should have been fired by now almost all still have jobs and will ibto the medium term
snapplebobapple··on Elon Musk Just Gave Europe a Reason to Replace American Technology
Go check my history. I am not elon. I am just fed up with all the hate for that guy when he has started atleast ! Companies on premises that have seemed incredibly stupid that then went on to revolutionize an industry. It is unwise to discount his opinion
snapplebobapple··on Elon Musk Just Gave Europe a Reason to Replace American Technology
Everyome, including elon, would think this is a good thing. He is likely tired of everyone else sucking so bad that he looks amazing for achieving like he has. Less sucking from everybody else would be awesome. Push that production possibilities frontier forward baby!

snapplebobapple··on Texas data center boom could erase decades of progress on air quality
Interconnection requests are the wrong way to look at it. In every power pool interconnecti(n requests are always a large multiple of whatever actually eventually connects for many reasons but a big one is testing multiple locati)ns for a large load. Also 5gw in a 90gw peak load system is massive.

snapplebobapple··on Texas data center boom could erase decades of progress on air quality
You can do that now with dc lines. There was a 5gw 3 way intercpnnect almoat over the finish line maybe a decade ago. Being regulated by the feds is not necessary or even desireable for this.

let me introduce you to this slope, its pretty slippery but i am sure its fine. Nobody has ever slid down such a slippery slope before...

refresher course on reality: you want these views out in public so you can publicly ridicule the people expressing them. You send them to jail they learn from the real criminals how to be really criminal with their views and come out worse than before. That these views are taking hold more and more now tells you there is a legitimate problem not being addressed and either the view is some shade of correct or, more likely, the view is an incorrect solution to the actual problem that won't work. Either way you have to figure it out and fix it. Repressing the view just makes the eventual result more violent without solving the underlying issue causing the view
