The Easy Path is a meal service like Factor that delivers healthy food directly to your door step.

The Easy Path is signing up for a fitness class on a regular schedule and baking it into your morning routine.

The Easy Path is not buying extra snacks - just don't have them laying around the house for you to eat when you're bored.

The Easy Path is the path of least resistance. However, you have some agency over the environment you create for yourself, so that path of least resistance is to some degree under your control.

squidlogic··on How long til we're all on Ozempic?
In my experience fitness is less about self control or will power and more about creating routines that lead to fitness.

For example, I have a routine of going to a group fitness class at my gym in the morning. I don't need to summon willpower, I just have a morning routine that involves doing x thing at y time. No thought required.

Given the abundance of options for fitness classes and meal plan services, you really can just put this on auto-pilot and have a lifestyle that is healthier than 99% of your peers.

Can you provide some data on this assertion? I would be surprised to learn that the majority of ordinary people (assuming you mean something like 'net worth < $1MM USD') do not care about housing costs and car costs, which are both assets.

squidlogic··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (February 2022)
Reveel | Senior and Mid Data Engineers | REMOTE or ONSITE in Irvine, CA | full-time

Reveel helps small and medium sized companies save money on their parcel shipping costs. We do this by making it clear where a company can get better discounts on their carrier agreements, and by recommending changes to their behavior that can save them money.

All of this is accomplished through software on our platform. This is why we need Data Engineers on our team. So far we've done pretty well by building out our capabilities with standard backend dev solutions (Postgres, DynamoDB, S3, etc), but our data infrastructure could use an upgrade now that we're seeing some success with client signups. We are planning a move to Databricks and would like a Data Engineer that has experience with that platform.

If you like to work with a friendly group of devs building something that is a first for its industry, please reach out. Here is a link to our job posting:

squidlogic··on Poll: Is the leetcode grind necessary to land a high paying remote job?
I'm doing the hiring for a small company. We do coding tests as part of our interview process. I know it can show false negatives but it rarely shows false positives (wrt coding ability).

However, we don't ask employees to work anything like 80 hours a week. In fact, we track overtime hours (> 40hrs/wk) and pull the red "panic" lever when it goes above a threshold as a control for burnout.

But like you said, you're applying a filter too (if no coding test -> low overtime required). It probably has false negatives (my company), but it's worth it for you because you have found that it rarely shows false positives.

The original phrase comes from Jesus in Matthew 13:57

And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown and in his own household.”

squidlogic··on Hackers are spamming businesses’ receipt printers with ‘antiwork’ manifestos
The purchaser of a service shouldn’t be interested in every aspect of the person providing that service. There may be some human rights that need to be respected, but those are codified into law.

Also, I don’t think it follows that because someone does not care about all aspects of a person they are therefore dehumanizing them.

Who of us ever really cares about every single aspect of another person? Even your spouse or close family member will have parts of them that you don’t care to engage with. In fact they may choose to keep those aspects private from you, meaning you cannot care about them.

In an employer employee relationship I expect it is similar. The employer shouldn’t be allowed to delve into the parts of the employees life that are unrelated to the “trade” of service for wage. This type of snooping would be expected and maybe required if the employer was supposed to care about the person themselves.

Fundamentally this is about the right of the individual to alienate their labor. I can sell my labor to others, but nothing else. To sell your whole person is slavery. It seems wage earning is an innovation not an exploitation.

exploit verb

Definition of exploit (Entry 2 of 2)

1 : to make productive use of : UTILIZE exploiting your talents exploit your opponent's weakness

2 : to make use of meanly or unfairly for one's own advantage

Is it unfair if you both mutually agree upon the trade?

That’s heavily dependent upon the role, not an “economic dustup.”

For a line cook at McDonald’s, yes, replacement is easy so wages are lower and fixed.

For an account manager in a highly relational field, it is much harder to replace this role and so that individual could leverage that skill-scarcity into better wages.

squidlogic··on Tech-driven approach to neighbourhood watch is cementing community divisions
Probably referring to this Washington Post data set:

https://www.washingtonpost.com/graphics/investigations/polic...

If you query the data set it looks like 38 unarmed black men were shot by police in 2015.

To determine likelihood of a random “black porch pirate” being shot by police, we should look at the % of police encounters that end in unarmed shoots.

I found a random quota post [1] that says the number of police encounters in 2015 was around 53,469,300.

Back of a cocktail napkin numbers show that we’re talking about something in the neighborhood of .00006% of encounters end in an unarmed black person being shot by the police.

This sounds similar to the concept of tempo in chess. A move that comes "with a tempo on a piece" is a move that gains a tempo by attacking that piece.

But hasn't Zuckerberg asked to be regulated?

I think Facebook would like to be have regulations put up on the social media industry to further entrench their position and create a regulatory moat against new entrants.

Network effects are good, but even better when coupled with regulatory burdens.

squidlogic··on FB seals off some internal message boards to prevent leaking, immediately leaked
This statement seems overly broad.

I suspect you would object if someone took your words out of context, for example. Would that therefore mean you are a bad actor?
