stackcollision··on The Gold iPhone isn't just for mindless sheep that want to show off
Is this guy really chiding me for not wearing "rolled up skinny jeans" and glasses that don't have lenses in them?
stackcollision··on Show HN: Building a Military Spec MacBook Air Case with Long Life Battery
This is exactly what i thought. Really cool build, but if you're going mil-spec, shouldn't you have chosen a more rugged-looking computer? With the macbook air it kind of reminds me of a Volkswagen on a jacked up monster truck chassis. My T61 would look badass in this, though.
stackcollision··on Shot tower
This kind of stuff is actually why I come to HN. I'm not really interesting in reading Blogger-25981875's take on <insert scandal>, and definitely not "I became an entrepreneur and if you do exactly what I did you can be successful too".
stackcollision··on 1,200 screenshots of computer interfaces from old movies
At least two people aren't typing on the same keyboard.
stackcollision··on Ancient languages: Perl (2004)
I'm probably going to get downvoted for this, but...I actually really like writing Perl. It's fun, and even the documentation has character.
stackcollision··on Why This Hacker Stood Up Against ‘Verbal Abuse’ in Linux Land
'Moving parts in rubbing contact require lubrication to avoid excessive wear. Honorifics and formal politeness provide lubrication where people rub together. Often the very young, the untraveled, the naïve, the unsophisticated deplore these formalities as "empty," "meaningless," or "dishonest," and scorn to use them. No matter how "pure" their motives, they thereby throw sand into machinery that does not work too well at best.'
stackcollision··on Lorem Ipsum translated by Google
I wonder if this is how they came up with the dialog for the Hybrids in Battlestar Galactica.
stackcollision··on Obama, NSA, Verizon and DoJ sued for $3B over PRISM
Also, I think that "every citizen in America" is too broad to be considered a "class". If the "Female Employees of Walmart" class-action suit was rejected for the reason of being too broad and diverse, this will be too.
stackcollision··on Why are determinants defined the weird way they are?
After reading down the list of other questions on the right, I think this is my new favorite website.
stackcollision··on Cluster (spacecraft)
I think it is physical materiel and fuel costs. The R&D efforts leading up to the launch were certainly not a waste, as the Ariane V flew again after the accident, so it doesn't make sense to include them in the loss.
stackcollision··on Hacker News is depressing
You tried to defend yourself in this post, but I think you accidentally ended up making his point for him.
stackcollision··on Hacker News is depressing
Or, to quote Heinlein:

'Moving parts in rubbing contact require lubrication to avoid excessive wear. Honorifics and formal politeness provide lubrication where people rub together. Often the very young, the untraveled, the naïve, the unsophisticated deplore these formalities as "empty," "meaningless," or "dishonest," and scorn to use them. No matter how "pure" their motives, they thereby throw sand into machinery that does not work too well at best.'

stackcollision··on This is what a DDoS attack looks like
The same kind of person who would steal books from a library, or talk in a movie theater.
stackcollision··on [dead]
I thought this project had died! This just made my day.
stackcollision··on Physicists Say They Have Found A Higgs Boson
This article reads like it was written by a third grader.
stackcollision··on The Fate of Google Glass
I'm not a huge fan of the Glass project, but what tweaked me about this article was how the guy constantly said the iphone was 'so innovative' you can't possibly nail down the thought process that lead to it. I can do it right here, in one sentence:

"Let's make a blackberry that's not a pile of shit."

stackcollision··on 85% of Smartphone Users Would Rather Give up Water Than Mobile Apps
The people who answered this way have clearly never had to go a day without water.
stackcollision··on Could technology help catch out lying politicians?
if(speaker.getJob() == JOB_POLITICIAN) { return true; }
stackcollision··on I used Google Glass
I love the picture of the first prototype. Crazy to see how far it's come.
stackcollision··on Most good programmers I've met are metalheads. Coincidence?
I know lots of programmers who listen to classical while they work. I personally listen to female singers while I work, although if I need to really get motivated I put on some metal or dubstep because the fast pace helps me. It's all personal preference.
stackcollision··on Bill Gates has donated over $36,854,000,000 in his lifetime
Even if you don't like Windows, you've got to admit that Gates is a good guy.
stackcollision··on Vertu Unveils Luxury, Android Smartphone for $10,000
Just don't drop it in the toilet.
stackcollision··on China is victim, threatened by overseas hackers
It must be nice to believe your country can do no wrong.
stackcollision··on Revenue Canada worker fired over video game creation
If I walked around my office saying I hate my job they'd probably fire me too, and people would say I was an idiot for doing that. This is the same thing. Free speech means you can say what you want, but people can also act on it as they want.
stackcollision··on US Senator says games are a bigger problem than guns
Parenting is the real issue here. If you can't teach your kids the difference between reality and fantasy, you have failed.

I had caring parents who love video games. I have been playing violent games since my dad got Doom for our N64. I am a well-adjusted individual with a good job, a happy relationship, a stable living condition, and plenty of friends.

Why didn't video games turn me violent? It's probably because while my parents love games, they didn't let me sit in front of them 24/7. They made sure I did my work, had an after-school job, was involved in clubs, etc. The same applies for any other medium, like TV. Everything in moderation. It's not the job of the video game industry to make sure kids are only playing x-hours per day, it is the parents'.

stackcollision··on Petition: Repeal Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DCMA)
If you're going to ask for something to get repealed, you might want to start with getting the acronym right.
stackcollision··on Ask HN: Anyone in NYC area using Verizon FiOS?
I live in Jersey City. Unfortunately I have to use it because it's all my apartment building is wired for.

It's an overpriced service, in my opinion. The reliability is good, but I'm paying $60 a month for their slowest speed. When I lived in PA I was getting twice the speed for $20 a month. Maybe that isn't unreasonable when you're also getting cable and phone for not too much more as a package, but I don't have a TV and don't need a landline so they're just gouging me.

One of the things I really hate about this area is how expensive everything is.

e: side note - when they come to set up your internet make sure all your machines are booted into linux (if you dual boot), otherwise they will attempt to install some of their software on your computer. They don't have a linux version of the software and will just give up and leave. If you have windows or osx running they won't leave until you let them install it.

stackcollision··on Facebook Study Says Envy Is Rampant On The Social Network
I have to say, I did see a noticeable improvement in my satisfaction with my life after I quit facebook.
stackcollision··on AAPL
That is strange. I saw this when it was first posted and the title was "AAPL -10%". Seems you've fallen victim to some Mod trickery.
stackcollision··on Asteroid-prospecting space fleet in the works
Sounds like Planetary Resources has their first direct competitor. I've been keeping a close eye on them and it'll be interesting to see how this plays out.
