svenfaw··on DeepSeek Laconic Decoding
"Discovered a very interesting thing about DeepSeek-R1 and all reasoning models: The wrong answers are much longer while the correct answers are much shorter."
svenfaw··on We've built the Ultimate e-Bike Battery that you can Repair and Refill
Sounds real interesting to me - and I don't even have a bike (yet)! Wish you the very best.
svenfaw··on Chrome 0day is being exploited now for CVE-2022-1096; update immediately
For Windows, IE11/Trident. This may sound ridiculous, but if you think about it, it's still maintained security-wise (and will be forever, as per MS), and since its codebase has been frozen a few years ago, its attack surface can only shrink with time.

So if you're OK with the limited compatibility, it might be worth considering.

svenfaw··on Nassim Taleb: Bitcoin, Currencies, and Fragility [pdf]
First time I hear of Coincap. The de facto standard reference for such stats is coinmarketcap.com, which lists a mind-boggling 16,155 cryptos.
svenfaw··on Show HN: I made a free, ad-free and open source tool for sharing private notes
To clarify, why is being able to display an alert a massive security flaw in this context?
svenfaw··on Father-son hacker duo is helping people crack into their lost Bitcoin
bitcoin-cli --dumpwallet "filename" should give you the private keys in WIF format
svenfaw··on TLS certificates have at least two internal representations of time

svenfaw··on Massachusetts Steamship Authority hit by ransomware attack; ferries delayed
If they could do that they might just as well disable the file-encrypting part.
svenfaw··on Actually Portable Executables
Awesome! But why no download link?
svenfaw··on Show HN: WebGL simulation of rainy autumn day/evening
Very nicely done. It even works fine in IE11!
svenfaw··on Google rolls out DNS-over-HTTPS support in Chrome 83
No, they only include the DNS server name in cleartext. (Unless I’m misunderstanding DoH)
svenfaw··on The NSA called me after midnight and requested my source code (2018)
Almost everybody was already using Google by late 1999.
svenfaw··on Patch Critical Cryptographic Vulnerability in Microsoft Windows [pdf]
So does Chrome, if I'm not mistaken
svenfaw··on Chrome 0-day exploit used in Operation WizardOpium
Far from it. Here's an older one this year: https://chromereleases.googleblog.com/2019/03/stable-channel...
svenfaw··on Zoom fixes major Mac webcam security flaw with emergency patch
They are mixing apples and oranges indeed.
svenfaw··on Google features that Microsoft turned off in Chromium Edge
Dead is not quite correct. IE has been put on a permanent feature freeze, but MS has committed to keep releasing security updates for IE11 during Windows 10's entire lifetime. It is also the only browser shipping with the current Server editions. So I would argue that immortal would be a more accurate term.
svenfaw··on Non-official site with a tampered version of KeePass
If you trust the signed source code there's no reason you shouldn't trust the signed binary - unless you have sufficient time and expertise to audit the source.
svenfaw··on Going gray for smartphone addiction

svenfaw··on Going gray for smartphone addiction
The same can be done on Android (Lollipop and above).

svenfaw··on Microsoft Has Manually Patched Their Equation Editor Executable
What compiler do you use? Almost all of them embed a compilation timestamp (which is one of the reasons reproducible builds are often a challenge).
svenfaw··on Ask HN: What tech that's right around the corner are you most excited about?
Getting a solid 32 hours (on average) out of my low-end Samsung J3 with 3G and location always on. Had to optimize a few things to get there, though.
svenfaw··on Operation Luigi: How I hacked my friend without her noticing

svenfaw··on App sizes are out of control
What blogging engine is this? Real nice and clean.
svenfaw··on Google guillotine falls on certificate authorities WoSign, StartCom
However keep in mind that WoSign is also used for Authenticode timestamping - so fully distrusting it might be tricky on Windows systems.
svenfaw··on Final Removal of Trust in WoSign and StartCom Certificates
Something to be aware of: on Windows, certain third-party executables are signed with a WoSign cert. One popular example being the npcap library (part of nmap). If you distrust WoSign roots, side effects may occur upon using nmap.
svenfaw··on The most secure password
If I'm not mistaken, using a Mersenne Twister in a secure application is a really bad idea.
