thebrain··on RSS Feeds for Last.fm
Connecting through music has been a part of every relationship throughout my life.

I actually connected with people through last.fm in real life. I remember the site telling me that I had a lot in common with someone so I sent a message since we lived in the same city. After lots of chatting through the site we eventually met and dated for a bit.

thebrain··on Backblaze has stopped backing up OneDrive and Dropbox folders and maybe others
Everything needs limits otherwise someone will figure out how to or accidentally break it.
thebrain··on I haven't used a mouse for 14 years
This is the best. I use it for work as well.
thebrain··on Sonos Amp Multi: A Multi-Channel Streaming Amplifier Built for Evolving Homes
Where's the Era 500? :(
thebrain··on New York skyscraper had a 1-in-16 chance of collapse
Veritasium covered this story recently.

thebrain··on The natural diamond industry is getting rocked. Thank the lab-grown variety
I do the same thing with friends who use IP TV that gets it's from a friend of a friend of a friend.
thebrain··on How to improve your WFH lighting to reduce eye strain
The room of my house that I use as an office did not receive much sunlight from the window that faces a brick wall. I recently had a skylight installed and wow, it's been life changing. I don't even need a light on anymore during the day. I highly recommend installing a skylight to add more natural light to a room if it's possible.
thebrain··on Ask HN: What brought back the joy of programming for you?
I'm a web dev by day so playing around with Unity has been really fun. Having to consider time, i.e. what does everything like at time t=0, t=1, etc., adds a new dimension I don't get it my day job.

It's not programming but playing around with Blender has been really fun too.

thebrain··on A day in the life of a Walmart manager
It most certainly is.

I worked at Wal-Mart in Canada for seven years when I was younger and during the summer, when I worked more hours, I would see the department managers and the upper level store managers do it every morning during the week. Wal-mart really pushes the idea of winning. Everything is about being the best at generating profit and beating the local competition into submission. The location I worked at completely destroyed a Zellers, Eatons, Bi-Way and possibly others that I'm forgetting.

I worked in the electronics department and my manager had the discretion to price big new movie releases below the competition (he would actually check out the competition himself). We had a line that snaked through the entire store for days when Titanic came out since we had the best price for a large radius. Having the best price on an item would be something that would be mentioned during the morning meeting and would be something everyone in attendance would get excited about.

thebrain··on Ask HN: Can I take photographs of the eclipse with my smartphone?
I've been puzzled by this myself.

Maybe it's to discourage people from holding up their phones and observing the event through their phones.

thebrain··on A living replacement knee to be tested in clinical trials within five years
Incredible stuff. I could use a few new joints myself.
thebrain··on Thomas Massie runs off-grid home using wrecked Tesla Model S battery
Only that kind of person would want to live off the grid...
thebrain··on TrenchBroom: A cross platform level editor for Quake-engine based games
I saw this tool mentioned recently along with the release of https://github.com/ExOK/Celeste64 . It's mentioned as a tool that was used during Celeste64's development so it's clearly not just for Quake engine based games.
thebrain··on Why Americans Suddenly Stopped Hanging Out
You should try the Jackbox party games. They require a certain level of engagement and are quite fun.
thebrain··on 23andMe says user data stolen in credential stuffing attack
Actually, if the attacker is determined enough they can use enough IPs and make it really hard to detect and defend against.

I work on combating credential stuffing on a regular basis... it's quite challenging.

thebrain··on Ask HN: What are your favorite alternatives to Postman and Insomnia?
cURL
thebrain··on Ask HN: Why do no Windows laptops have a trackpad as nice as the MBP?
Microsoft Surface laptops are pretty close to MBPs.
thebrain··on Firefox rolls out Total Cookie Protection by default to more users
I tried enabling this recently and I immediately noticed that websites started appearing in light mode instead of copying my system settings and displaying in dark mode. It seems like in it's efforts to make my fingerprint the same as everyone else's Firefox stops telling websites about my display settings. The issue immediately went away when I changed the setting back to privacy.resistFingerprinting = false.
thebrain··on Diablo IV Collectors Edition Does Not Include the Game
This has been the trend lately for games that are multiplatform.

It's better than making 100M copies that contain the PC version, 100M copies that contain the Xbox version, etc. and then having them sell at different rates and having 3-5 different SKUs.

thebrain··on Last.fm turns 20
Last.fm has a special place in my life since I actually met someone I was quite fond of through the site. I kept seeing her profile pop up as someone with similar musical tastes. I noticed we lived in the same city so I sent her a message. We corresponded back and forth for awhile, eventually met and then dated for a few months.
thebrain··on Just a bunch of idiots having fun: a photo history of the LAN party
My friends and I have had a LAN party every year for the last 20+ years. Usually around Christmas or early the following year.

Since the pandemic hit we moved them to be online over Discord and I'd say that they've been just as fun as the in person ones. There are obviously pros and cons but given we're all much older now and many people have moved away I doubt we'll ever have an in person LAN again.

thebrain··on Ask HN: How to say no to a GitHub issue feature request?
Keep in mind that if the user doesn't speak English natively they may be coming across more aggressively than they actually mean to.
thebrain··on Coinbase is rescinding already-accepted job offers
Beanie babies are actually a tangible object though. :)
thebrain··on Germany is offering a summer of cheap trains
This is very interesting to hear. In 2014, my wife and I went on a vacation in Germany and I found that it was cheaper and more convenient to rent a car than it was to use trains as we've typically done countries like Italy and France for our vacations. I chalked it up to Germans being a big fan of cars.
thebrain··on Show HN: I'm 48 and finally learning how to be a game developer
Here, take my Google Survey money. Best of luck!
thebrain··on An UPDATE without a WHERE, or something close to it
Using --i-am-a-dummy is the best recommendation:

  root@localhost [main]> update user set password = 'abc123';
ERROR 1175 (HY000): You are using safe update mode and you tried to update a table without a WHERE that uses a KEY column.
thebrain··on Why wild foxes led you to treasure in Skyrim
Twitter seems to be showing the popup every time you follow a link within Twitter. The simplest way around this is to just reload the page.
thebrain··on Sublime Text 4
You've probably never needed to work with really large files or edit/examine a fie in HEX, it really shines for these use cases.

It's not really an IDE and I've never used it to write code.

thebrain··on Environmental impacts of food consumption by dogs and cats (2016)
Such a misleading article, the meat producers and processors are maximizing their use of the product to ensure there's minimal waste, that's basic economics.

If I'm looking to make chicken stock, I have to call up my local butcher before going there to make sure they haven't processed all of their chicken spines into dog food...

thebrain··on Shopify employees accessed customer databases without authorization
I got the same email from Fangamer, I'm surprised I haven't gotten similar emails from other Shopify stores I've used.
