thinbeige··on I launched a paid community in one month
The story sounds quite impressive. Also the post itself, its writing and visual style, are surprisingly well executed. OP must be working 24/7.

So, I don't want to be that guy but every time I had disclosed my secret sauce in the past, e.g. how my recent venture sky-rocketed, I disclosed it when the growth was over, never, really never, before. Why should I hand out my treasure map which was months of work to everyone?

However, the author wrote that she wants to reach 20K and this will be still a challenge and so she seems quite credible but still, reading this post took some time and I am not sure if it was well invested. I feels like the typical r/entrepreneur post how-I-made-x-in-y-weeks but, again, much better executed.

thinbeige··on Apple Silicon M1: Black Magic Fuckery
Even with legal restrictions: just put an Ubuntu server at home and ssh to it. Then you wouldn't have the GBit connection but still better than using Docker on a non-production OS.
thinbeige··on I asked GPT-3 for the question to “42”
OT: How can an ordinary mortal like the most of us play around with GPT-3 and make their own experiences?
thinbeige··on Apple Silicon M1: Black Magic Fuckery
FWIW, I never run docker on my local machine (I develop on a remote machine), benefits: remote machine os + setup is very close to production and GBit bandwidth up and down at my hoster is so much nicer when working with Docker images.
thinbeige··on Show HN: NotePlan 3 – Native (Mac/iOS) note-taking based on local Markdown files
OT: I'm on the fence if I should create an app in an related field in Electron or native macOS. Anyone in a similar situation, how did/would you decide?
thinbeige··on DevTerm - An Open Source Portable Terminal for Every Dev
OT: I fell into the rabbit hole of designing hardware (something like this). Just don't do it, it's super fun but it doesn't pay off: every SoC is different and you start with every SoC from scratch and waste tons of time. Prototyping is slow, you need min 2 weeks for every iteration (for smaller endeavors) and the worst, 98% of hardware-based business models are weak and don't provide any lock-in.
thinbeige··on Play: Statically typed Forth, compiled to WASM
Congrats, this looks very nice. I played a bit around and headed then to Wikipedia's entry of Forth to learn more about the og language. Please elaborate more about why you did this project and decide for Forth from your perspective.
thinbeige··on Show HN: Create Slides with Plain Text
So great and love to detail (just the subtle smooth flashing when you finished the presentation), great color scheme and the best: just the essentials and no nonsense features.
thinbeige··on As internet forums die off, finding community can be harder than ever
Wouldn't call it a die off, more a consolidation: reddit got some really good niche communities and if you want to narrow it even further down Discord evolved quite well in this regard (great communities + easy access to multiple groups unlike with Slack).
thinbeige··on Leveraging ML Compute for Accelerated Training on Mac
Does anyone have an educated guess how this compares to current consumer Nvidia GPUs? I was just about to order a maxed-out Nvidia system (ignoring memory for now).

Bonus question to anyone from Apple who might read this: Will Apple contribute to the PyTorch repo re M1 support?

thinbeige··on Ikea has bought TaskRabbit
Buy a Billy shelf and get it built by TaskRabbit. Is this the reason they bought them?
thinbeige··on A 220b spreadsheet app in HTML/JS
Super impressive and I love code-golfing but the title is slighlty misleading since the HTML part of the app, the cells, seem not to be included in the 220b. Still great.
thinbeige··on Bitcoin ‘More Than Just a Fad,’ Morgan Stanley CEO Says
I didn't expect people asking how to buy Bitcoins on HN.

Just get an account on Kraken, Coinbase, Gemini or wherever and look that you don't keep your coins on the exchange for too long. Start with small amounts. And those nerdy forums and subs (I think you mean Bitcointalk and Ethtrader on Reddit) are actually good places to get started/informed.

thinbeige··on Google pulls YouTube off the Amazon Echo Show
Am I the only one who thinks Amazon Alexa is overrated?

The only three voice features I use are:

- Set the timer to 10 minutes (mostly pasta)

- Wake me in 1 hour (for a nap)

- How is the weather today?

That's it and and I don't have a home which is connected to my phone like most out there.

I think voice control only makes sense for commands where you don't need further interactions with the system, like watching a result on a screen or when driving a car. Then it's ok, otherwise I can't imagine any voice driven killer app.

thinbeige··on APFS and HFS+ Benchmarks on 2017 Macbook Pro with MacOS High Sierra
OT: Just develop on a remote machine with Linux and 100Mbit up and down via SSH. Then Docker flies.
thinbeige··on YC’s Essential Startup Advice
> Who said anything about social media

I don't care about Facebook and even if my product hasn't any relation to FB, Twitter, etc. At some point you probably need them anyway, eg for ads and then you must have a FB company page and thus a handle/account.

The best time to get those social media accounts is when you got the product domain name. The wise founder checked if the respective social media handles were free before he registered any domain name. You can also wait of course few months and register a cumbersome handle because somebody else took the the handle then.

My message was: Just setting up the foundation of a product and a company--and by foundation I don't mean the actual product--is already a lot of work.

thinbeige··on YC’s Essential Startup Advice
> launching a mediocre product as soon as possible, and then talking to customers and iterating, is much better than waiting to build the “perfect” product.

Yes, yes and yes. But this is so easy said but still a struggle and need to be put into perspective. Let's say we do a super simple business, eg a resume writing service on scale (just for the sake of having a simple example). To be ready to reach out to first customers we need to...

- Setup a landing page, takes ten minutes with Squarespace but to get all the copy and visuals right or least good enough for some first testing, min one day, rather three to five

- Setup and prefill all social media channels, should take half a day incl getting the first 25 likes in order to save the name

- Create the first ads and iterate to some ads which actually convert at good CTRs/CPCs take multiple days because you need to let a campaign run at least for one day; so lets assume another five days

So just to test this stupid-simple agency business properly we need already two weeks.

Now imagine, you do something a bit more sophisticated, an actual app/SaaS/game/bot/whatever, you still need minimum two weeks for the 'Marketing' stuff before plus the time for the actual app. And being mediocre doesn't work in highly competitive markets.

So, if you are able to (1) build a first testable thing in 2-4 weeks you are very good. And you are even better if (2) you have the power and positivity to do 12 tests per year because you need more than one shot.

thinbeige··on It’s time to kill the web app
People who hate have either a severe depression or try to get easy attention.

Why hating web apps? Every app has their advantages.

- Native apps are great and I couldn't imagine how Sketch, Snapchat, etc. could be done as a web app

- Web apps are great because I wouldn't want to install apps just for those I use once in while or apps where I rather consume than interact

- Console apps are great when I focus on raw text manipulation and they get even better when working on remote servers

So, why they hate?

thinbeige··on The power of a 'not-to-do' list
The title and idea are great, the post itself not so. However, one part of my 'not to-do list' ist my /etc/hosts file. All the worst time wasters go there and redirect to 0.0.0.0.
thinbeige··on Exploring the Bitcoin Blockchain with Elixir and Phoenix
Nice post and great that somebody did this with Elixir.

Another way to get into the Bitcoin Blockchain is just to use this API with simple API end points:

https://blockchain.info/api

There check the Blockhain Data API which is a good start to get going within minutes.

Also check the API of Etherscan.io for the Ethereum chain.

Both APIs should work with any language.

thinbeige··on Google Is Close to Buying HTC Assets to Bolster Hardware
> Google has tried to buy its way into hardware twice before, albeit more expensively.

Google bought Danger which got Android. Motorola was a failure yes. So not twice but once.

thinbeige··on Minideb – A small image based on Debian designed for use in containers
Slightly OT: Which distribution (for being a Docker host) has the best unattended security updates incl. reboots?

Requirements:

- Quick to setup, best would be a one-liner and not something I have to google everytime

- Update and reboot times can be slightly randomized, so the entire cluster won't go down

thinbeige··on Ask HN: What's the next big advance in AI you're looking forward to most?
Question to VCs on HN: Is AI declining? Not that it is dying down but my feeling is that the general investment activity in AI slowed down but maybe I am wrong.

1. Do you get still that much AI deals in your inbox?

2. Do you close this quarter as much deals as one year ago?

thinbeige··on Show HN: No Coin – A browser extension to block coin miners
Today I read that The Pirate Bay tested this new form of monetization (running a miner in you browser). I thought that might solve website monetization finally. We still have to figure out stuff like battery draining on mobile but it is the first step and I can buy some Monero which is well suited for JS/CPU mining (or in other words, it doesn't have a huge upside when mined on GPUs).

And what do I see here? That before it even started people are fighting it.

Found this solution better than ads and infinetely loading ad-tech JS files.

thinbeige··on The iPhone X’s notch is basically a Kinect
Wondering if Apple should have rather spent their time and energy in R&D for a front-facing camera sitting behind an OLED screen so we could have a real bezel-less screen.

Earspeaker behind a screen works already (a Chinese handset manufacturer did this) and I dont need the other sensors and that for Face-ID. I found a fingerprint sensor better anyway.

thinbeige··on Lenovo Accidentally Leaks an Image of Its ‘Retro Thinkpad’
What wm do you use (I use plain i3)?
thinbeige··on Lenovo Accidentally Leaks an Image of Its ‘Retro Thinkpad’
Really? Maybe I should get an old model as well, the build quality then was unmatched.
thinbeige··on Lenovo Accidentally Leaks an Image of Its ‘Retro Thinkpad’
I can understand your preference for the X201 (r/thinkpad is full of folks like you and my first Thinkpad was a X20 or so) but the screen resolution would kill me. It's 2017 and text, bash, vim or I mean just anything on a 120dpi or less screen is just a terrible idea.
thinbeige··on Lenovo Accidentally Leaks an Image of Its ‘Retro Thinkpad’
It's the Xiaomi Mi 12.5". It's a great subnotebook, Arch working flawlessly since all parts are from Intel but sometimes I need a bigger screen thinking that 14" of a Thinkpad X1 might be the sweet spot.
thinbeige··on Lenovo Accidentally Leaks an Image of Its ‘Retro Thinkpad’
I (as a decade long MBP user) still think that Thinkpads nailed notebook design.

Since I moved more and more to Arch on a cheap Chinese notebook which seems to replace my MBP for 90% of my tasks I hope to get a Thinkpad with Arch as my next main notebook.
