tim333··on Wealth Inequality in America drawn to scale
A lot of the wealth generation can be productive. You start a company to cure cancer or something. It succeeds and the company is worth loads on paper although you don't buy any yachts or anything. Should you be eaten?
tim333··on CNC Stone Carving
It's one of the things I think may be cool with AI robots when they get good at those. You should be able to build all sorts of fancy things.
tim333··on CNC Stone Carving
There doesn't seem much mention of gothic in that https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/And_did_those_feet_in_ancient_...
tim333··on Anthropic S-1
I was thinking more that general progress in AI may lead to competent AI lawyers doctors managers etc.
tim333··on US President says he will ban the term 'artificial intelligence'
Humans chuck out a bunch of next words too. Intelligence is more if they are any good.
tim333··on Trump says he will ban everyone from using the phrase 'artificial intelligence'
Machine intelligence?
tim333··on Anthropic S-1
>Things look about as good as they ever will.

That kind of assumes things are static and Anthropic won't get a first mover advantage in some new area. If you look at the recent progress in maths it seems unlikely AI has plateaued.

tim333··on Solar power is becoming bigger than nuclear
You can get a reasonable idea in the near term from the announcements of CATL and BYD who are building the things.

Like CATL announced a cost of $19 per kwh. https://electrek.co/2026/07/16/catl-sodium-ion-15000-cycle-g...

which I think is far cheaper than the prices in your links. I think they'll have a job going lower for a while as the raw materials are ~$10.

I think the actual cost to buy one now it more $40-60. The $19 is probably their target in a while.

If you spread $60 over 15000 cycles that's 0.4c per kwh stored and returned which is pretty cheap compared to what I pay for electicity (~$35c).

tim333··on Solar power is becoming bigger than nuclear
When I was in South Africa their pebble bed reactor was the thing. They were working on it from 1993 until 2009 then gave up. Not totally sure why. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pebble_Bed_Modular_Reactor

There was a German one too:

>constructed in 1960, grid connected in 1967 and shut down in 1988. It was a 15 MWe, 46 MWt test reactor used to develop and test a variety of fuels and machinery. ... Over its lifetime the reactor had many accidents, earning it the name "Shipwreck".

Not quite sure what goes wrong but they seem problematic.

tim333··on Lula wins election after final votes tallied
Well some of them. You can always use another word for those. Socialist tends to get used. It's kind of funny how politics corrupts all terms from their original meaning.
tim333··on A mathematician reads the AI future
I remember Japan's 5th gen language stuff in the 1980s. It was nothing like this.
tim333··on A mathematician reads the AI future
Computer chess kept developing though even if it wasn't IBM doing it.
tim333··on Peter Thiel, the tech oligarch who believes in the Antichrist
I'm interested in the immortality and anti aging stuff and it doesn't mean I'm terrified of dying. I'm probably pretty average that way.
tim333··on Peter Thiel, the tech oligarch who believes in the Antichrist
I guess it's a question of perspective like I wiped out a bunch of bed bugs and I guess I'd be the evil destroyer from the bed bug perspective?
tim333··on Lula wins election after final votes tallied
The word may be ill defined but it's a useful term for the current trend of right wing populist autocratic leaders.
tim333··on Lula wins election after final votes tallied
I feel the whole Putin/Trump/Bolsonaro/Netanyahu fascist like schtick is wearing a bit thin with voters. Making <country> great again is running into military quagmires.
tim333··on Challenge Is Gone
>the challenge is gone. I simply know that I can solve any engineering problem.

Well on with the fusion reactors, human Mars landers and the like if you can solve anything. I look forward to it.

tim333··on "Musk" Documentary Pulled from Almost Every One of 472 Theaters After One Week
Not surprised. I mean 3h 52m of moaning about Musk. Who's going to watch it?

I mean if they cut it to 1:30 of slagging Musk and threw in some jokes maybe.

If there's a 10 min highlights edit on youtube I'd likely watch it.

tim333··on Volodymyr Zelenskyy: The speed limits on Starlink and Starshield are still there
Apparent it's working again as of the evening of Oct 24th
tim333··on Elon Musk Just Gave Europe a Reason to Replace American Technology
I agree it's probably more a Trump+Putin thing.
tim333··on Elon Musk Just Gave Europe a Reason to Replace American Technology
A lot of the war developments have been unexpected and would have been difficult to plan for. I mean

1 - Putin was thinking of invading. I thought US/Biden would say no or well attack you but it was more I'd prefer you didn't but won't do anything so invasion.

2 - People thought Ukraine would collapse but no

3 - Tanks and artillery - people thought that would be the thing but no

4 - Drones render tanks almost useless

5 - Starlink becomes a thing on naval drones. Also not expected

6 - Become used on things like the Hornet AI drone made by Eric Schmidt - not expected

7 - Musk/Trump recent flip not wholly expected

And many more

tim333··on Elon Musk Just Gave Europe a Reason to Replace American Technology
Hobbling starlink, dropping Russian oil sanctions, blocking patriot delivery etc. isn't rhetoric.
tim333··on Elon Musk Just Gave Europe a Reason to Replace American Technology
Yeah but as a European those things are livable with FB/Google/Amazon/Boeing all provided decent service if annoying at times.

But siding with Russia invading Europe is a different category.

tim333··on Elon Musk Just Gave Europe a Reason to Replace American Technology
I think what happened is Merc and VW wanted to sell into China. Part of the deal was they had to build factories in China and allow Chinese imports the other direction. It was very profitable for a while but is now causing issues.
tim333··on Elon Musk Just Gave Europe a Reason to Replace American Technology
Come Democrat control of the house in a couple of week, subpoenas are going to be flying.
tim333··on Elon Musk Just Gave Europe a Reason to Replace American Technology
Most of the regulations in question are not safety. More stuff like not being able to fire people.
tim333··on Elon Musk Just Gave Europe a Reason to Replace American Technology
Not really.
tim333··on Elon Musk Just Gave Europe a Reason to Replace American Technology
China mostly. They got undercut.
tim333··on Elon Musk Just Gave Europe a Reason to Replace American Technology
>Strictly speaking, according to the Constitution, we aren’t officially at war because only Congress has the power to declare war. https://www.hks.harvard.edu/faculty-research/policy-topics/i...

He's following Putin I think, it's a special military thingy.

tim333··on Elon Musk Just Gave Europe a Reason to Replace American Technology
I used to use a Thuraya phone and those are fairly small and light and use geostationary. Not much bandwidth though.
