trs80··on Buy Now, Pay Later Helps JAB Billionaires Build Beverage Empire
Exactly. From the article, "Frees up cash flow" simply means frees up funds for company use that would otherwise have been given to the suppliers. What happens when that money gets invested and returns are not made within the year pay back the suppliers? They are playing a dangerous game.
trs80··on Ask HN: How should I afford my children?
Stretching 4 hours might be easier than you think. In my experience I do only about 4-6 hours of focused work per day anyway, during my 7.5 hour work day.

Other than that, learn to live well below your means. Look into the FIRE community (Financial Independence Retire Early) to get an idea of how to reduce your expenses. Many people live beyond their means. A good first step is ridding yourself of a car, TV subscription, and cell phone (if extreme like me).

trs80··on One year of cycling to work
>There are about 250 work days in a year in Baden-Württemberg, excluding weekends and public holidays. Of those I was missing for 34 days for vacations, being sick and doing home office. On 11 days I used public transportation, on 5 days a car. That leaves 200 days on which I cycled to work.

Wish we had this here.

trs80··on Leisure Luxuries and the Labor Supply of Young Men [pdf]
> Maybe young women just don't like video games?

Perhaps this can be a contributing factor as well. Problem is, I mentioned this in my original statement. Did you not see? Doesn't have to be either-or, you know.

>discover why older MEN seem to spend less time in these pursuits than younger men

Maybe they got jobs, had children, etc. Just speaking from experience. As an adult I have less time for games nowadays.

trs80··on Leisure Luxuries and the Labor Supply of Young Men [pdf]
You're misrepresenting my statement... Increasingly anti-male != completely anti-male.
trs80··on Leisure Luxuries and the Labor Supply of Young Men [pdf]
> demonstrate that society is "anti-male" rather than "less aggressively pro-male than it used to be."

Call it whatever you'd like... it can still be a contributing factor. Also, I never claimed society was anti-male, only increasingly so.

This paper is interesting but I don't think it really gets at the core of the issue. It associates the decline of young men in the workforce with so-called "leisure luxuries" such as video games. The paper even admits that, "For other groups - younger women, older men and older women - recreational computer is not a leisure luxury."

I would like to submit a complimentary hypothesis. While it may be true that young males are more interested in video games, video games are not necessarily the cause of the decline of younger males in the workforce. Perhaps games are simply a tool of escapism, utilized by a demoralized section of the population (young males). This could explain why young females are not influenced as drastically by the same leisure luxury. As with anything, the underlying reason behind young male decline in the work force could be a variety of things (e.g. males have more interest in games compared to young females or are more addiction prone to game than young females), but I believe that the case for escapism in young males in a society which is increasingly anti-male is a strong one to explain them seeking refuge in video games.

Isn't it illegal to offer a "store credit" instead of a refund in cases where IC forgot my items and I paid debit? Seems like a really shady way to bring customers back.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the whole concept of online ordering but the IC UI forces users into choices that benefit IC by default.

trs80··on Twitter Soars After Surprise Sales Gain, First Real Profit
Being hated on the basis of something one says is a good heuristic for me, as a free speech advocate, to decide whether or not I respect someone for their courage. So long as someone says something they think is important. Perhaps you do not agree with their journalistic methods but you're attacking the messenger and not the idea presented.

trs80··on Mexicans Afraid of Being in America Create Farm Worker Shortage – Crops Suffer
The southern agricultural economy suffered greatly after slavery ended. I think America will adjust to this some how, without starving.
trs80··on Mexicans Afraid of Being in America Create Farm Worker Shortage – Crops Suffer
Automation can fix this moving forward but ultimately the lost crops are a result of a bad business decision by the farmers to rely on an an undocumented underpaid labor force without thinking there would ever be any repercussions.
trs80··on Exploring portable ratings for gig workers
Reminds me of Black Mirror episode where everyone is rated by the number of stars they receive and are obsessed with the likes or dislikes. 0 stars end up in a dungeon even if they've broken no laws. Very cypberpunk/dystopian.
trs80··on How a Medical Catastrophe Can Bankrupt a Life
The scary truth about doctors is they frequently misdiagnose. When I was healthy each diagnosis was pretty accurate "you're fine". Then I had a real catastrophe and was mistreated by the medical community. Till this day I suffer and I'm still not content with their diagnosis. Don't put too much faith in them to save you.

trs80··on My new favorite book of all time
In my case I wash outer garments once per month (button down shirts, pants, etc). But I wash under garments weekly: white t-shirts, underwear, long underwear (esp in winter). They protect my outer clothes so get washed more frequently. I hang up my button-downs immediately when I get home. I don't like having to wash and iron a shirt every week, which does not get dirty anyway. I'm not sure if I'm the only one who does this but I would imagine they did huge batches of clothes back then that got dirtier more often, to save time, and didn't really wash their "Sunday best" as frequently.

trs80··on Online shopping in Africa doesn’t work because of shipping and billing forms
The solution he's proposing is good because GPS is an accurate model for finding an exact location on Earth. Prior to GPS humans came up with models for describing specific locations by abstracting land mass into regions and sub regions and so on until we finally arrive at a person's house number or box. Why did not Africa? This is a question I ask myself but I guess it doesn't matter in the end as we should all soon be moving to GPS in the future anyway. This would be a difficult jump for Africa to make but it might actually be easier starting with a blank slate that they have. Imagine trying to move the USA to a GPS based system? Unlike Canada our zip codes alone are not accurate enough to find a precise mailbox location. We still require street number and street name. If we made the move to GPS, our legacy systems would still need to be supported, whereas Africa never had these legacy systems in the first place.
