vevoe··on Postgres isn't slow, your storage is
Just out of curiosity why not?
vevoe··on Cloudflare Drop
why?
vevoe··on From Supabase to Clerk to Better Auth
I use better auth for a side project i'm working on. It's open source, you can pay them to manage your user/auth tables if you want or you can run it all on your own db.
vevoe··on Ask HN: How do you say “I don’t know, but I’ll get back to you” confidently?
Yup yup basically this. Being consistent is great but I'll be pedantic and say the key is actually following up and then also being right.

As far as how to do it confidently? The same way you say "that is a tree" when you're looking at a tree. You're 100% sure you don't know, just say it. The rest is probably in your head. That's been my experience at least.

vevoe··on Use One Big Server (2022)
Will do, thank you!
vevoe··on Use One Big Server (2022)
Is there somewhere I can read more about your setup/experience with your streaming site? I currently run a (legal :) streaming site but have it hosted on AWS and have been exploring moving everything over to a big server. At this point it just seems like more work to move it than to just pay the cloud tax.
vevoe··on FFmpeg 8.0 adds Whisper support
I'd love to see that script, do you have a link?
vevoe··on Context Rot: How increasing input tokens impacts LLM performance
No I feel the same way too. I'm on the max plan and I swear it has good days and bad days.
vevoe··on Things I learned from 5 years at Vercel
I'm not saying that Next.js is good or bad but we deploy our Next.js app in a docker container and it's never been an issue. I'm curious what issues you had?
vevoe··on Cloudflare to introduce pay-per-crawl for AI bots
tbf I think that's already been happening for a while now
vevoe··on Entry-level jobs down by a third since launch of ChatGPT
That makes sense to me. There's another post on the front page right now talking about shortening the work week (I haven't read it yet tbf, so I could be wrong about it's content) because of AI. People have been talking about shorter work weeks for a long time now, it just doesn't happen. What does happen is we get more done and the GDP goes even higher.

vevoe··on How we sped up Notion in the browser with WASM SQLite
I also moved away from Notion a while ago for being crazy slow. For personal note taking I use Obsidian, big fan of it.

For my dev team I recently moved us to eraser.io. Still in the early stages with it but it's working well enough for us atm.

vevoe··on Ant Design – the second most popular React UI framework
I've come across this library a lot but never used it. I did inherit a project that uses chakra-ui though and have very much enjoyed using it. This seems similar, has anyone used both and have a preference for one or the other?

vevoe··on I created the same app with React and Redux
Have you used redux-sagas on any projects before this one? How do you feel it compares with redux-thunk?

I've used redux-thunk for all of my past projects but recently inherited a project using sagas. It seems to be pretty unorganized and I'm wondering how much effort I should put into cleaning it up, if it's even possible.

vevoe··on Ask HN: Has anyone ever been hired from “Who wants to be hired?” threads?
Somewhat related, I reached out to a few people on the "Freelancer? Seeking freelancer?" threads and had several responses, one of which I just started on.

I wouldn't be surprised if people had similar luck on all such threads.

vevoe··on Ending PHP Support, and the Future of Hack
It's not about control it's about ease of use. You can get a cheap shared hosting account and upload your php site in minutes without configuring a thing. Not everyone wants or needs to manage a server.

Think about a small business with no tech experience that just needs a basic marketing site. They download some cheap Wordpress theme, make it say what they want and upload it. Easy! Digital Ocean would be a disaster for them.

vevoe··on Former Tesla Firmware Engineer Discusses the System
I understand that.

I guess I was commenting more on the general messiness he was describing. I can empathize with it is all. I can see how quickly and easily it happens in the small apps I build, I can't imagine how hard it would be to reign it all in at Tesla scale at the pace they've been going.

vevoe··on Former Tesla Firmware Engineer Discusses the System
They've been going 100mph for years now. It doesn't come as a surprise to me that they haven't gone back and made it pretty.

While not even remotely on the same scale, I just spent 3 weeks building an app as fast as possible because my client's old one was causing 75% of their support calls. The code isn't pretty, but it works and it works a lot better than the old one. I know deep down that code is going to stay ugly for a while but that isn't what's important right now.

vevoe··on Startups that launched at Y Combinator’s S18 Demo Day 2
That's good advice. I've worked up and down the stack but recently have had great success in marketing myself as a front-end dev. You're right though, I shouldn't get stuck in that mindset. Thanks for the reminder :)
vevoe··on Startups that launched at Y Combinator’s S18 Demo Day 2
Anima does seem really great. As a front-end dev seeing this stuff makes me happy and slightly anxious for the future. On one hand, styling basic marketing sites manually is boring and I would happily use this if it fits easily into my work flow. On the other, I hope it doesn't start making complex React apps soon or I'm in trouble :)
