xnx··on Pangram Image 1.0
I'm very skeptical of AI detection and watermarking for text (especially short passages), but AI detection for images and videos seems much more plausible (for now at least).

I would love if Meta licensed this tech to use for everything on Facebook, Instagram, and Whatsapp. Including ads!

xnx··on Awesome repositories are no longer awesome
I know there's been a lot of discussion around pay to send as a means to reduce email spam, but pay-to-PR (for unverified submitters) seems very reasonable.
xnx··on The Hackintosh Reborn
It's heresy, but my favorite laptop was a 17" Macbook Pro with Bootcamp.
xnx··on How to Lie With Statistics (1954)
Lying with statistics is a subset of the practice of lying with numbers. My [least] favorite trick to lie with numbers is to provide numbers without any context (e.g. "this datacenter uses 1 million gallons of water per year").
xnx··on Gemini Omni 1.2 Flash: Fast and cost-effective with longer clips
The examples are very impressive. 12 seconds is enough for a lot more of these to start showing up on social media. Tiktok (my fyp anyway) has been very good about keeping out AI videos (outside of ads at least), but my parents' Instagram is near 100% AI slop.
xnx··on Discord is ditching Electron and its new app uses less RAM
I kinda wish we went the other way, and all apps were web apps: easier to modify on the client side, etc.

xnx··on AI is forcing us to pay off 40 years of technical debt
"Technical debt" seems like the wrong term for bugs that were totally unknown despite existing for years/decades in software used by billions of people.

"Technical debt" is a perjorative for conscious tradeoffs made when shipping software.

xnx··on Vathographs: Photographic depth maps as creative expression
Yes. Phase detection auto-focus (PDAF) is what I should've linked: https://research.google/blog/learning-to-predict-depth-on-th...
xnx··on From wild to mild: Friendly foxes show changes in brain region
> Where do we draw the line?

They've got to be cute.

xnx··on Basically no one is using AI agents for their DoorDash orders
Agents are good for complex purchases with lots of hidden fees like hotels. Less useful for burgers, though I'd definitely try it for a large catering order.
xnx··on Show HN: I built a tool that prices a prebuilt PC part by part
Cool idea. Promising, but failed for me on https://www.amazon.com/Dell-XPS-8950-Desktop-i7-1TB/dp/B0BR9...

I got pretty good results when I asked an agent to put components to build an equivalent PC in a cart for me.

xnx··on Ask HN: What's your current AI agentic setup?
Google Antigravity CLI using Gemini Flash 3.8 most of the time. Amazing what it can do.
xnx··on Geoffrey Hinton: it might turn out we were better off without AI
All economic activity emits CO2 directly or indirectly. The question is are the benefits worth the cost, and could the process be more efficient. A molecule of data center CO2 doesn't affect the climate any more than one that comes from producing cement, or getting a Labubu delivered overnight. If we want less CO2 emitted, it is best to treat emissions equally and let people decide what they value when they spend their money.
xnx··on Geoffrey Hinton: it might turn out we were better off without AI
This is a bit like Rudolf Diesel saying maybe we're better off without airplanes. The field has long since left this guy behind.
xnx··on Microsoft fixes a Windows 11 annoyance as PC revenue declines
There still a Windows 3.1 file picker in ODBC Data Source
xnx··on AI is destroying my CS degree
> it's still extremely unclear what effective teaching with these tools looks like.

We can't say what effective teaching is if we don't first decide/rediscover what teaching/education is for. Job training? Citizen building? Compliance development?

xnx··on Google researchers demand freedom to tell the world what they know about AI
I've heard this one before. Not too smart to issue an ultimatum to your employer if you weren't expecting to get fired: https://www.reddit.com/r/MachineLearning/comments/k6467v/n_t...
xnx··on Postman silently auto-installs AI plugins and attempts to share all API data
> I still don't know how they're valued at $5B+

Like statistics, 90% of valuations are totally made-up.

xnx··on Google will turn off search for schools that reject AI
There's no going back. You can't use 1998 PageRank on the 2026 web.
xnx··on Google will turn off search for schools that reject AI
Seems reasonable. You can't have a useful search of the modern web without AI.
xnx··on Quili AI
Entirely dependent on the specific datacenter and location. If this datacenter is doing high-volume open loop evaporative cooling in a drought-stricken area, that is pretty bad on the Chilean authorities for allowing it.

The fact that the Panama Canal uses ~2 billion(!) gallons of water a day never gets mentioned.

xnx··on The AI Bubble Monitor
Some great charts in there that emphasize how absolutely ridiculous SpaceXS(?)ITesla is.

My take on "bubble" activity from HN chatter: https://www.alwaysleaveanote.com/hacker-news/bubble-talk/

xnx··on Sam Altman's Case Against Your RAM Is Efficient. That's the Problem
This keeps getting posted, but it doesn't seem interesting to discuss. Money is the way we decide how scare resources are allocated.

If Sam wants to buy 16GB of 6 year laptop RAM, he can send me a check for $2000.

xnx··on Sam Altman's Case Against Your RAM Is Efficient. That's the Problem
Better analogy might be that instead of everyone having gas powered generators they run for 14 hours a day, we should put them all in one place and run extension cords to peoples homes.
xnx··on Sam Altman's Case Against Your RAM Is Efficient. That's the Problem
I sell the GPUs I have now for $2B for the right to buy the same number of GPUs in 10 months for $1.6B when my datacenter is complete
xnx··on Sam Altman's Case Against Your RAM Is Efficient. That's the Problem
Is #3 true? This seems very inefficient. Aren't futures markets supposed to fix this type of thing?
xnx··on Vathographs: Photographic depth maps as creative expression
Phones (Google Pixels at least) use sensor data from inertial sensors and slight hand movement as part of their depth calculation: https://research.google/pubs/depth-from-motion-for-smartphon...
xnx··on The Ford Privacy Promise: You're in Control of Your Data
Don't let Ford PR crowd out the primary message that they collect and sell your data.
xnx··on AI Can Write More of the Code. We Still Have to Engineer the System
> AI Can Write More of the Code. We Still Have to Engineer the System

2 years ago AI could not write most code well. Today it definitely can.

AI will probably do just fine at "engineering the system" in another year or two.
