zeroer··on For reliable excess returns, VC funds need 500 investments
If ever. The Central Limit Theorem requires the distribution to have finite standard deviation.
zeroer··on Microsoft is reportedly in talks to buy TikTok's US operations
On your suggestion I browsed the front page for 10 minutes just to see what all the fuss has been about. Tiktok is worse than I could have imagined.
zeroer··on Stanford students recreate 5,000-year-old Chinese beer recipe
You're bringing into clear relief why I wasn't accepted to Stanford.
zeroer··on Too many people have peed in the pool (2016)

zeroer··on Tanzania bans newspaper for 2 years
Wow, you're right. I missed that interpretation.
zeroer··on Tanzania bans newspaper for 2 years
The rules for newspaper headlines is not the same as for normal sentences.

> "Tanzania bans song for two years"

That's ungrammatical as a sentence but a perfectly good headline.

zeroer··on Fractal planting patterns yield optimal harvests, without central control
Yea, in metrizable spaces, those statements are equivalent.
zeroer··on Fractal planting patterns yield optimal harvests, without central control
There's no One True Definition of what it means to be fractal, but a lot of working mathematicians use the criterion that a space's Hausdorf dimension is not equal to its topological dimension. Oftentimes (but not always), the Hausdorf dimension will be fractional, which is where the word comes from. Self-similarity is an easy way to satisfy that requirement in a way that's easy to explain, but it's far from the only way.
zeroer··on Carnot Efficient Dyson Spheres Are Undetectable by Infrared Surveys (2016)
The article posits that maybe advanced alien civilizations may be motivated to build larger (and hence harder to to detect) Dyson spheres for the efficiency gains. While that's a possibility, it's also possible that being harder to detect is an end unto itself for safety reasons.
zeroer··on Why my students dump their boyfriends: The 3 most eye-opening ideas in economics
> A common example to help explain sunk costs is the movie theater experience, where a person buys a ticket and, 20 minutes into the movie, she realizes that it is a horrible movie and it will only get worse.

Offtopic I know, but twice in my life I've walked out of a terrible movie at the theater within the first 30 minutes and gotten a refund from the manager. Don't think you have to sit through terrible movies!

zeroer··on Pinterest Raises $150M at 2015 Share Price
Can you add ?share=1 to your spider to get all Quora's content?
zeroer··on Ask HN: How are top-grossing apps calculated?
I know who you're talking about.
zeroer··on Ask HN: Books you wish you had read earlier?
Yea, I agree. Yudkowski found his voice starting around chapter 20. The initial chapters could use a good rewriting.
zeroer··on Ask HN: Books you wish you had read earlier?
So worth it. If you read it, you'll wish there were more.
zeroer··on Ask HN: Books you wish you had read earlier?
Don't bother with the rest of the Ender Quartet. While they're not terrible, they don't hold a candle to Ender's Game. There's just better uses of your time (like any other book on this page).
zeroer··on What Self-Driving Cars See
> drove way too fast, kept less than required safety distance

Welcome to driving.

zeroer··on Our understanding of the way the body handles salt may be wrong
I'm on something similar. For about half a year, food tasted bland, but now most of the time I eat at a restaurant, food tastes gaggingly salty.
zeroer··on Facebook's tentacles reach further than people think
If you have out-of-band connections with all your friends and you have friends who are willing to jump through weird, nerdy, technical hoops, what do you need Facebook for?
zeroer··on Notes from an Emergency [video]
Majority, sure. But I wouldn't call 54% (the percentage of voters who voted for somebody other than Trump) a "sizeable majority".
zeroer··on Are laws like the French ban on emails after work saving us or burying our jobs?
Huh. That's an interesting definition of "vacation".
zeroer··on Psychopathy: A new clinical approach offers hope
Thank you. I appreciate the guidance, but I'm not attempting to troll, and this is something that I would say in an in person conversation and have.

I really honestly believe that you'd do these kids a favor by euthanizing them. It'd be a relief to their parents and the future people who wouldn't be victimized, too.

zeroer··on Chelsea Manning released from prison
It was dumb of Assange to make the offer.
zeroer··on Psychopathy: A new clinical approach offers hope
There's another factor at play in Samantha's case - she was adopted. The article mentions that no evidence of abuse was ever uncovered by previous parents (both biological and foster), but who knows?
zeroer··on Widening Gap in U.S. Life Expectancy
I don't know for a fact, but I would very much expect the answer to be yes. The relevant metrics to look at would be body fat percentage, cholesterol, triglyceride, and blood sugar levels, resting heart rate and blood pressure, and insulin sensitivity. After correcting for those, weight is just not a risk factor, so far as I know.
zeroer··on Rich Retirees Are Hoarding Cash Out of Fear
I sincerely hope that when I'm that old, I'll be above such pettiness.
zeroer··on Rich Retirees Are Hoarding Cash Out of Fear
I would assume that most American retirees are mostly living off of Social Security. Pensions and annuities are in there too.
zeroer··on Rich Retirees Are Hoarding Cash Out of Fear
I've thought before that CRPGs are decent training for how to handle money (emotionally speaking).
zeroer··on Widening Gap in U.S. Life Expectancy
It's relevant to me.
zeroer··on Widening Gap in U.S. Life Expectancy
BMI is a terrible metric for weightlifters.
