GunlogAlm··on Is Tor still safe to use?
There are no "100% safe" solutions. There will always be weaknesses and vulnerabilities in any system. The sort of criminal who requires or expects 100% safety is quickly going to be caught due to being a dullard. Knowing you're never truly "safe" is what good criminals are keenly aware of at all times: you can plan and prepare for certain eventualities. Once you think you're "safe", it's the beginning of the end.
GunlogAlm··on Productivity Is About Attention Management
I'm in the same boat; diagnosed with ADHD-PI (UK, so we don't use the term 'ADD') as an adult. I've improved vastly thanks to medication and good routines but it remains a constant effort, and improvement is a continual process. The book Taking Charge of Adult ADHD by Russell Barkley helped me significantly.
GunlogAlm··on Why Are Creators Paying for TikTok’s Mistake?
I thought that too, but perhaps only personal data is deleted irrecoverably, allowing them to retrieve other/periphery account data; maybe an account's "fans" aren't considered personal data, for instance? I'm not familiar with TikTok, admittedly.

Otherwise, perhaps there was some delay on account deletion?

GunlogAlm··on Why Are Creators Paying for TikTok’s Mistake?
Why wouldn't the EFF concern itself with the careless and disorganised response of a digital company to online privacy legislation?
GunlogAlm··on If I Sleep for an Hour, 30 People Will Die (2016)
This doesn't appear to have been the case:

GunlogAlm··on Top Scores: Video Game Music
Oof, yeah, that one's something else entirely. I don't tend to mind these newer formats, but I'll admit I'm not a fan of that one.
GunlogAlm··on Top Scores: Video Game Music
Reader view in Firefox has always worked flawlessly for me with BBC articles, including these "funky" ones. It's a godsend.

Is there a reader view/mode in Chrome, or is it only supported via extensions?

GunlogAlm··on “Every minute I spent thinking about competitors was a minute wasted”
Haha. I don't have much to add, but this seriously made me chuckle.

I misread it similarly, at first glance.

GunlogAlm··on There is no reason to cross the U.S. by train, but I did it anyway
Really enjoyed reading this! Seems like a fascinating journey, I'd love to make the trip some day.
GunlogAlm··on EU government websites have undisclosed adtech trackers from Google and others
Yes, I worded that poorly. I meant loading Piwik's UI; it was cripplingly slow and often timed out. I had little luck in narrowing down the cause, but it was hardly a thorough investigation on my part, IIRC.
GunlogAlm··on EU government websites have undisclosed adtech trackers from Google and others
I tried Piwik but it seemed so cripplingly slow. Trying to load the analytics often took minutes.

Has anybody else experienced this?

GunlogAlm··on California declared drought free for first time in seven years
He's seemingly either a climate denialist or some sort of troll; just look through his post history.
GunlogAlm··on Firefox Send: Free encrypted file transfer service
I think we can all agree 1080p is "good quality", right? Your average pirate probably isn't demanding 4K quality, I imagine.
GunlogAlm··on Dutch join backlash at expensive drugs by making their own
> in the UK for example they just need a BSc

That doesn't seem to be true? This page says you need an MSc, in the UK, to register and be a licensed pharmacist: https://www.healthcareers.nhs.uk/explore-roles/pharmacy/stud...

GunlogAlm··on Facebook Still Tracks People on Yelp, Duolingo, Indeed
I'd like to think plenty of folk here would have ethical objections, too. Perhaps that's wishful thinking.
GunlogAlm··on Facebook Still Tracks People on Yelp, Duolingo, Indeed
> How many people here track their users?

Right across the Internet? Very few, I imagine!

GunlogAlm··on Top domains by aggregate score on HN from the past year
Opinion pages are clearly set apart from news reporting. In The Guardian, opinion pieces appear in the "Comment is Free" section.
GunlogAlm··on Top domains by aggregate score on HN from the past year
It oughtn't be. You might not like their opinion pages -- yes, they're typically left-wing -- but The Guardian's reporting is absolutely top notch; amongst the best in the world.
GunlogAlm··on Google personalizes search results even when you’re logged out, new study finds
Probably not, hence "almost certainly".
GunlogAlm··on Tech giants face 2% UK digital services tax
That's a line pushed by large corporations to convince people that money saved through tax avoision is somehow benefiting the consumer. Companies should pay their fair share of tax.

Moreover, the argument makes little sense when dealing with companies like Google and Facebook. The average consumer isn't paying for access to Google Search, Gmail, or Facebook...

GunlogAlm··on Google Optimize now free for everyone
This is awesome and will save me a lot of time. Thanks!
GunlogAlm··on Google Optimize now free for everyone
'Optimize' has been around for quite some time, just in case anybody thinks this is new. In fact, I believe this feature has been around for over a year, now.
GunlogAlm··on Coca-Cola to buy Costa coffee for £3.9bn
HN is for more than tech.
GunlogAlm··on OpenStreetMap for the dyslexic
There is more evidence: https://s-e-o.org/which-font-is-best-for-dyslexic-users-the-...

Apparently there have been a few studies, and a thesis, investigating "dyslexic fonts", which found no real benefit. I can't find any evidence that OpenDyslexic and the like are helpful, meanwhile.

GunlogAlm··on OpenStreetMap for the dyslexic
Regarding the font used, OpenDyslexic, there isn't actually any evidence it helps readability (apparently): https://s-e-o.org/which-font-is-best-for-dyslexic-users-the-...
GunlogAlm··on Securing Web Sites Made Them Less Accessible
Even here in rural Devon in England, nothing running in our libraries is particularly old, and there's nothing truly "ancient" left at all.
GunlogAlm··on Seaweed could be scrubbing more carbon from the atmosphere than expected (2017)
There are already significant seaweed farms in Japan, and farms exist in China, Korea, Fiji, Zanzibar, and even the UK.
GunlogAlm··on Leaked Emails Show Google Expected Military Drone AI Work to Grow Exponentially
Because most people here are rather left-wing, and I feel that the majority of lefties hold the US military establishment (rightfully, IMHO) in very low regard, due to recent activities and engagements — e.g. the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the bombing of Libya and Syria, and so on.

Not to imply this is only a position of the political left; it's my experience, however, that left-wing folk, including myself, are not exactly overflowing with praise for the US military...

GunlogAlm··on Google seeks to limit ‘right to be forgotten’ by claiming it’s journalistic
Seems sensible to me.
GunlogAlm··on Cloudflare's new DNS attracting 'gigabits per second' of rubbish
> I’ll start: do we ever store 1.1.1.1’s users’ IPs? No. They’re never written to disk.

Is there a guarantee that this will always be the case? Might there, in theory, be a point in the future where users' IPs are collected and stored?

Loving 1.1.1.1, btw.
