Expertise and graduate degrees in critical pedagogy in secondary and post-secondary educational leadership. Have now written more than 114 million in grants (as of October, 2026). The ROI on my salary is pretty ridiculous.

Left higher education due to the unbelievable shift towards making higher Ed into a business and the toxic culture that follows that shift inherently. Hit me up on email for more soapbox rants.

Contact me at LoughlaHN (at) gmail (dot) com. But note that I only really check that one occasionally.

Loughla··on RealPage rent-pricing case wraps with nearly $360M to renters
> And the evidence is that in every country which has seen a period of high salaries for workers, real estate has been cheap during that period for workers to buy.

Real question. Do we have evidence of this from anything except developing economies pulling countries out of poverty? Like a first world country sort of thing. Because to me it seems like higher salaries comes first, and the property would lag for a bit while the market reaches its new level. Does that make sense?

Loughla··on US FAA says it will phase out floppy disks from air traffic control by 2028
I feel like people under a certain age don't really understand this.

While we see improvements in hardware and software today, it's NOTHING like the late 80's and 90's. Our first home pc was out of date in less than a year (thank you for that recommendation, Tiger Direct). As a child, I couldn't run games that came out more than about 10-12 months after we upgraded our machine. It really was stunning to be a part of.

And now my home pc is about 4 years old, and replaced a machine that was 9. I plan to run this one for at least another 6 or 7 years unless something amazing happens that nobody sees coming.

Loughla··on Frustrated ranchers want people to quit 'rescuing' their working guardian dogs
Our largest dog is extremely active. He is a great bird and rabbit dog and he runs and runs and runs when we're not hunting. He'll follow the tractor for miles back and forth in the field. He's skinny but, according to the vet, exactly where he should be in weight.

Our neighbor's mom called the animal warden on us for not feeding him. He eats better than I do.

Her dog is a morbidly obese miniature collie.

Most people's perspective of ideal animal shapes is incorrect.

Yeah Ford killed the f150 lightning because it appealed to no one. Trades people didn't want to fuck with charging their vehicle. Normal people didn't want to pay 100k for a truck.

Their new one is very interesting. I wanted an electric truck when I bought my most recent one but just couldn't afford it. If it's 30k for the base, figure 40k with bells and whistles. That makes it super attainable with a decent trade.

Loughla··on Casio Watches of the 1980s
They were pretty late to the game, and it's really nothing but a wrapper on other services (you can choose the model when you prompt it), but they do seem to have gotten this right, in my opinion.

It's great for rough drafts, but requires real work to turn into something final. It's PHENOMENAL at macro building and saves just a metric shit ton of time there. It's also very good at multiple simple changes if you don't want to actually build a macro.

They seem to have hit the sweet spot of providing the tool to support the artist instead of just replacing the artist skills.

Edit: I am unaffiliated with the company other than using their product. It actually turned me from a one time purchaser when I needed the updated tools (twice, I think) to an annual subscriber. I said I would never do that, but it really is an extreme time saver.

It's funny until the third or fourth iteration when it randomly decides to forget about transparency. Then it gets my blood pressure up.

I use AI to make small edits to designs I've already done (one of our side businesses does deal with graphic design). Like changing the color of an entire layer or quickly editing complicated text. One thing I've noticed is that if you enter more than 2 or 3 edits, every model will just completely redo the design into a generic AI mess. I don't know why they lose the thread, but you have to really work one step at a time and waste time generating multiple images as steps in the process. There's only one super useful AI tool in this space, but it's locked behind an annual subscription by Corel.

I absolutely use semicolons when writing professionally. They're just basic parts of grammar, and if you want to be taken seriously by some parts of the world (academia, I'm glaring angrily at you), you would use them.

I guess it comes down to expectations? You don't expect formal conventions from a website writer, while I absolutely do.

I find it interesting that it was a flag for AI writing for you. That's going to make me consider my voice in certain situations now.

Loughla··on Police chief unplugs Flock cameras after company ignores contract cancellation
Depends on the type of police. Sheriff's are, I know. But I'm pretty sure city chiefs and state chiefs are just appointed by other elected officials. So I guess one step removed?
Loughla··on Lenovo's 'encrypted' fingerprint USB is just an unencrypted SD card in a case
I mean, it's a terrible subheading because it's way too long, but it's grammatically correct. It doesn't read like AI to me, why do you think it is?

Strange new worlds definitely comes closest to scratching the nerd exploration/human experience itch.

Loughla··on US Government is hiding a secret court ruling about how it spies on Americans
That's just moving the goalposts. Nothing in there says it's illegal to own any of those things. You just might not be able to carry a sword (there are carve outs for reenactments in most places btw) and you might have to move or pay more for automatic weapons.

They're still not illegal, as OP said.

Loughla··on In Leaked Audio, Flock CEO Tells Cops Backlash to the Company Isn't Real
I won't say America is founded on authoritarianism. I will say it's founded in the practice of letting businesses run how they see fit, though, with minimal oversight from the government. . . So flock is doing what we value as a nation, just not for the reasons you claim.
Loughla··on In Leaked Audio, Flock CEO Tells Cops Backlash to the Company Isn't Real
I live in a very rural area, and most people are sort of overly apologetic about their mistakes. The ones that refuse to acknowledge their mistakes or apologize are what we call "assholes".

In a rural community, being labeled as an asshole has real repercussions. A neighbor down the road is moving away because of this. He called the cops on a guy who was trying to catch some horses that got out of their pen when the man looking for his horses pulled into his driveway to then back out and turn around. The place he bought was my neighbor's grandpa's farm. There was an old barn with a wooden door inside that my neighbor asked to buy from him (his grandpa had carved his and the grandma's initials on it when they were dating). So the asshole said sure, for $25k. When my neighbor said no, the asshole burned the door. He's an asshole, and because of that nobody would help him when he needed help with his crops because his combine died.

Now he's leaving. Community is important when there's not much of it around.

But I digress. I'm not sure geography or politics has anything to do with emotional maturity.

Loughla··on ChatGPT Keeps Telling People 404 Media Can Solve Their Tech Support Problems
I deleted my Reddit account when they killed 3rd party apps. I have no social media except Reddit and HN. My excuse for keeping Reddit was that the content was good, if you just curated your subs.

After killing it, and never going back to that site since, I can tell you that it gets your blood pressure up. Before chatbots, most popular content, even in the better subreddits were, essentially, ragebait.

Do your blood pressure a favor and stop going to reddit. HN is okay because it's slower paced and, typically, ragebait is discouraged here.

Loughla··on Canadians are running out of time to oppose Bill C-22
Mailed letters result in a form letter about their stand on shit that doesn't matter to me.

The last time there was a competitive election in my district was the 70's before the state was gerrymandered to hell and back.

Too many people vote for a candidate just because of the little r or d next to their name on the ballot.

Loughla··on Canadians are running out of time to oppose Bill C-22
My senator doesn't have a number you can call to talk to an actual person. When you call you get an automated message telling you to fill out a contact form on their website. When you fill out the form all you get is an automated response telling you how the senator is fighting for your rights as a citizen (not even acknowledging that you contacted them) and as a bonus you get signed up for their political bullshit newsletter. If you go to their office, it's behind security and multiple locked doors that you can't get through unless you have an appointment. To get an appointment you have to call the office.

When the maze is only dead ends, why is it surprising that people disengage?

Loughla··on The Other Epidemic: Trying to get off benzodiazepines
Benzos can fuck you up good and proper without abuse. I was prescribed some for panic attacks. Take as needed, up to every 4 hours.

I took one a day for 4 days, as the panic would flare up right before I tried to sleep. I figured, I could be taking 6 a day, so 1 a day shouldn't hurt. And it was only 4 days in a row. No problem.

Day 5. Bang. Dt's. Immediate anxiety attack. Suicidal thoughts. Brain zaps. High blood pressure. Vertigo.

They are no joke, but doctors throw them around like they used to with opiates.

Loughla··on Plex vulnerabilities being exploited in the wild to drop a cryptominer
It's not unusable on my shield but it's definitely worse. Not just 'change is bad' worse, but actually worse.

Selecting a season and then the episode gives you the episode summary instead of just playing the episode.

Hitting back on an episode brings up a side menu sometimes and others it leaves the episode like it should.

Why Plex?

Loughla··on Rabbits were a medieval royal luxury in England until the Black Death
We've raised meat rabbits for years, among other overstock.

Depending on where you live, a New Zealand/California mix is about as good as you can get for meat rabbits. They grow well and aren't overly delicate.

If you live somewhere with wild heat waves, just straight Californias, or some of the custom breeds from Texas A&M would be better to avoid heat deaths.

Also, you can just feed them grass in rabbit tractors, but they won't thrive like if they had access to a more varied diet. That's for all rabbits, not just meat rabbits

Loughla··on Florida's HOAs and condo associations are making the housing crisis worse
My experience is they remove all character from a neighborhood in pursuit of bland stick and ball landscaping (tall yew, short yew) with too much grass in the yard that you have to waste water on and apply hazardous chemicals to, to keep it green and weed free year round.

But also I'm biased.

Loughla··on Florida's HOAs and condo associations are making the housing crisis worse
Those are two different things. The union negotiates pay and benefits. What does the HOA negotiate?

Also I'm a firm believer that if you're at a union shop and decide not to be part of the union you shouldn't be able to use their pay scales and should have to negotiate everything for yourself. The same with HOA's, I guess. If they do something for the community, like the pool the other poster talked about, then you shouldn't have access. Easy.

They shouldn't be able to take your house for any reason.
