Refusing23··on I turned an old phone into a NAS
I've done (sorta) similar by using syncthing on an old android phone.

It's worked pretty well. of course it just syncs a folder between my devices, but seeing as my desktop and laptop both have to be on, and my desktop is offline, when i was out... i couldn't really sync properly.

so i got the middleman, my old samsung phone, to sync to. it can be turned on all the time, connected to my wifi at home and make sure i always have a place to sync my data to, regardless of what computer i'm using.

Refusing23··on Introdution to Computer architecture explained with Minecraft [video]
i cant watch the video but i do wonder if less than 7 minutes for this explanation is anywhere near enough detail
Refusing23··on Differences in cancer rates among adults born between 1920 and 1990
diet has changed. a lot more processed foods and drinks.

hell, even cooking oils are kinda 'new' and barely existed 100 years ago

Refusing23··on Ferrari exec foils deepfake attempt by asking a question only CEO could answer
if thats the only question, it wont work for long
Refusing23··on Children should be allowed to get bored (2013)
When my kid is bored he eventually figures out something to do.

if he gets less tv or whatever, for a period, he gets deeply invested in lego or drawing or similar

Refusing23··on Who will control the future of AI?
What i hear him say is: i dont want competition outside of the US
Refusing23··on Tot Notes
thats actually quite fun

'spotted a <insert rare bird> at this location>'

and you dont have to remember where, its just saved automatically :)

Refusing23··on Install Docmost – open-source Notion Clone
but obsidian aint open source though

at least its free and files are stored locally

Refusing23··on Install Docmost – open-source Notion Clone
It works much like a "simple" database

you can make tables, with headers and data.

so if youre a team you can make tasks, and then another one for team members

then you can combine the two, so basically assign people to tasks and easily filter through them using the notion gui

or you can do simple things like your own tasks, add books to a "books i've read" collection, or whatever.

https://www.notion.so/help/intro-to-databases

and of course you can then easily take data from the db, and put them into your notes as well, at least if i recall. i've only used notion a tiny bit

Refusing23··on Button Stealer
just like 'Grammarly' which is basically just a keylogger
Refusing23··on AMD's MI300X Outperforms Nvidia's H100 for LLM Inference
stock value doesnt reflect a company's income or ability to pay their workers
Refusing23··on AMD's MI300X Outperforms Nvidia's H100 for LLM Inference
> but not the production capacity to compete with Nvidia yet.

thats just a question of negotiating with tsmc or their few competitors

(also didn't tsmc start production of some factories in the US and/or EU?)

I mean, nvidia use tsmc, so does amd.

Refusing23··on OpenRecall
i tried this but it wouldnt run... so..

that was disappointing

Refusing23··on Pasta and Rice May Be Healthier as Leftovers. Here's Why
"healthier"... lol

I've heard this years ago - but the healthiest option is to just skip rice or pasta all together

Refusing23··on My encounter with LA's raw-milk, powdered-meat smoothie
maybe they could just ditch the raw milk part...

anyways, loads of nutrition in beef liver, for sure. but i would never pay 20 bucks for a drink.

Refusing23··on My Month Without a Smartphone
i cant really recommend a specific phone but "dumb" android phones do exist, so they can tkae pictures, send texts etc. to their friends but you can prevent them from scrolling through tiktok
Refusing23··on Volkswagen aims to debut new affordable EVs in 2027 with prices around $22,000
I think the point of that was, it'll cost the same as todays ~20000 euro cars. so whatever price they have in 27
Refusing23··on Sam Altman just vowed to donate most of his wealth through giving pledge
i dont think people care where his money ends up when he dies

people probably care more about how he gets that money, and what he spends his life doing

Refusing23··on Apple signs deal with OpenAI for iOS, still wants Google as an 'option'
I agree

its not something i'd want either

but i see it could have a lot of potential benefits - especially on an iphone with multiple apps easily being able to communicate properly through this AI.

and of course it can provide awesome benefits for disabled people - making their device much more capable than before (in their hands)

Refusing23··on New Arm-Powered Surface Pro and Surface Laptop Aim Directly at Apple Silicon Mac
> outperform comparable Intel- and AMD-designed chips

sure, in some tasks

im sure the gamers will have a thing or two to say

what made the transition easier for apple was their rosetta translationlayer

i wonder if windows have similar.

If i recall, the video i saw on an arm-chip powered windows laptop from a while ago, the performance was terrible and a some software just wouldnt run

Refusing23··on I built an online PDF management platform using open-source software
i tried converting a pdf to markdown and i just got a large bunch of ... seeminly random numbers and letters.
Refusing23··on Can turning office towers into apartments save downtowns?
Turning office buildings into apartments or small businesses (or both) could be a good solution. there's a severe lack of housing in a lot of cities in many countries
Refusing23··on Apple introduces M4 chip
Their 2nd largest revenue source (at ... 20-25%, below only the iphone) is software services.

iCloud, App store revenue, apple tv, and so on

Refusing23··on Cardio fitness is a strong, consistent predictor of morbidity and mortality
free just means tax paid

its a nice idea, but i think adults should pay for their own helmets

however, children... sure. give them one.

Refusing23··on Cardio fitness is a strong, consistent predictor of morbidity and mortality
I've heard about this zone 2 as well, it makes sense. its a decent stable pace.

when i've been running i do similar. though i also do accellerate a bit and slow down, because its... more fun.

Refusing23··on Why is simple decoration so rare in recent work?
I think the main reason is cost / time

How long would it take to make beautiful lamp posts, and what would it cost, if they had to be as detailed as back then, but produce the same amount of them as needed today?

Of course, with the rise of 3D printing and such, we may be able to return to it, without it increasing costs too much. I hope.

Personally im mostly tired of the lack of color. Everything these days is made in shades of grey. Metal, concrete and glass.

Refusing23··on Ask HN: How to manage phones and PCs for elderly parents?
My mother needed a laptop for managing the finances of some little club

So she asked me what to get within a limited budget - a windows laptop. I set it up with firefox, ublock origin etc. removed all the bloat.

and for helping her with whatever, on the computer, i installed Rustdesk. It has a super simple ui so you can get the password over the phone - then i can login and manage her computer from my own computer. (Rustdesk is free and opensource remote desktop and file sharing program)

as for phone.. my mother uses a samsung smartphone. Its what she's used to. So i have also installed Firefox on there, with ublock origin and ... thats really all i needed to do. She can login to her email or whatever other apps she uses, by herself.

My mother is 71. Not a complete tech idiot but also not really experienced with anything other than regular office-use (email, notes, managing a calendar)

i chose android for her phone because i know it better - and ads... oh god i hate ads. Thank god for firefox and ublock origin.

as for my grandmother who's over 100 years old... she has a landline. And thats it.
