crossroadsguy··on Kentucky man becomes the first humanist granted religious exemption from AI
Apple ought to be made to ask their users to confirm (opt-in) whether they want their AI/Siri/Intelligence/<or whatever they decide at any given time> and everyone else should be provided with a slimmer OS and slimner OTA updates.
crossroadsguy··on New iPad mini

That's it! Hitting "Buy". This was all I needed to read. Even though the ™ symbol is missing it will do.

crossroadsguy··on iPhone Duo Teardown
Paying for an inferior and crazy expensive device in 48 months instead of 36 months makes it somehow not inferior?
crossroadsguy··on The Curse of Soldered RAM
Most people do repairs all the time but that doesn’t mean it has to be ib their garage with their own tools and bare hands. Point is getting it repaired

Easily

Affordably

Anywhere (almost anywhere)

In other words: not having to face something like this: “ah, so your A and G key don’t work? Lovely. Let’s look. Got it! The chassis needs changing and motherboard which is soldered into it. Good news, we can let you reuse the battery” and all that a bright grin that puts my house’s brightest LED to utter shame.

crossroadsguy··on The Curse of Soldered RAM
I care more about weight and these things aren’t really light anyway. Also people, imho, unnecessarily obsessed about thinness — because the difference is not 0.5 inch vs 2.5 inch, it’s something that no self-respecting laptop bah will register the difference in any meaningful way, unless someone likes to stuff their 13-16 inch laptops in the jeans pockets :)

I had moved to Zoho for one domain and it was nice. Doesn’t do e2ee theatre and makes me install bridges and tunnels to flyovers just to use imap. Once my current plan ends with my provider I will probably reconsider them once more. What’s the plan cost for hosting 3 domains?
crossroadsguy··on Tasks as Code: Move Your Tickets into the Repository
These kinds of things are an EM’s wet dream. Especially an EM who knows they are not adding anything to the team but are capable of putting together a slide, mentioning “productivity reached X” without mentioning the baseline, and still being able to sell that improvement.
crossroadsguy··on OpenAI and Anthropic cut their LLM prices by up to 80% within a few months. Why?
While I disagree with PC's insinuation, but in China there's just one thing that carries legal/fatal/etc risk for a large company and lying to public or investors isn't that.
crossroadsguy··on OpenAI and Anthropic cut their LLM prices by up to 80% within a few months. Why?
Is ths the one that was OpenCode? Or some story/controversy with OpenCode? You know sale, founders moving around and all…?
crossroadsguy··on OpenAI and Anthropic cut their LLM prices by up to 80% within a few months. Why?
You should do that. I am also summoning the motivation to start on my own. I guess the worse will be that I fail. Might as well fork sth more basic, or build on top of sth SDK/library like.
crossroadsguy··on OpenAI and Anthropic cut their LLM prices by up to 80% within a few months. Why?
I am thinking about it but I think forking will miss the point. I'd rather do in a way when there is a prevalence of various types of agentic/harness SDKs for people to make their own apps (aka harnesses) from.
crossroadsguy··on OpenAI and Anthropic cut their LLM prices by up to 80% within a few months. Why?
At this point I'd rather try to invest effort and usage in a harness that is FOSS and is actually steered by a non-profit. Goose comes to mind and to be honest I haven't tried it beyond installing and giving it a prompt or two.

Comiong to harnesses, even Pi seems like a weird choice. I mean Pi, until it's "your own customised Pi", is pretty useless and pointless. Besides they are also starting to have their own models/infra business (or is it mostly proxy like OpenCode?).

I have also given up on Herdr and came back to Tmux (and doing a bit of customisation slowly, as I need it). I wanted to try dsh but somehow couldn't brave it. Maybe once I have a good container/vm setup is ready. I know I am biased/discriminatory here, but there are things about which I'd be better safe than sorry.

As for OpenCode: I used V1 a lot and I am struggling with V2 currently. Yes, it just doesn't feel right. It's neither here, nor there. I am not a harness reviewer, so I won't be able to put that into industry accepted words and tests but it doesn't feel useful and right to me. At least Pi is completely stripped (it might be changing though) and then you can make it as you want it. Even Claude Code is better than OpenCode and that's saying something. I find Codex to be quite effective but it doesn't feel familiar. I am still in the middle of some work so I am using OpenCode v2 a lot (and then there's OpenCode Go and I won't want to play around a lot with it) but I will move away. Where? I am not sure yet.

What I feel will work for me? I guess a harness of my own! Forked something smaller/similar? I don't know. No, really! Just like I have never found the "my" notes app and journal app yet, I don't think I should use any of these harnesses if it doesn't work for me, especially now that I can kinda make one (hail LLM/vibe coding :P). It doesn't even have to be a TS/Node monsters most of these harnesses are. More I am reading about, digging deeper (haven't been quite far yet), how models and the "local setup" interact, the more I end up scratching my head – why all this drama and why all these 5 billion GitHub star "harnesses" with trillions of lines of code! Why? It doesn't make sense!

I was talking about the website.
crossroadsguy··on Show HN: Corgi, a helpful {agent, terminal} multiplexer
At this point any coder that forgot (or rather deliberately chose not to) to tell their agent

'oh btw, add the light theme as well and maybe read the system's, if that's not such a bother of course'
isn't worth the time, and they probably didn't bother about the 'a' of accessibilty/ux in the first place anyway, neither is their tool no matter how famous it is or would become.
crossroadsguy··on Reforming English Spelling
I suspect I may soon start seeing "u" for "you" everywhere. Maybe "r" for "are". Because why the hell not. Even at places that don't do it right now (and even frown) and I won't be able to avoid it anymore by just avoding text-speakers. It will result in perpetual dehydration for me due to excessive vomiting.

> Look we can just stop pretending that India isn't largely technically incompetent

Or we can just stop pretending that no one in this sub-thread is a racist.

> Let's just be honest on the internet and stop pretending not to understand things.

Yeah, let's do that. You wanna start? Come on now. Go on.

crossroadsguy··on eMudhra to exit global SSL/TLS certificate business
The only true country. Land of the free. Gaad's country. (Mallu mates, it's different from God's country, fret not).

> The fact this CA was based in India ultimately has nothing to do with it

Oh, then you will be missing more than half the fun of this thread. The sleeper agent racist in good people of the good part of the globe come knocking whenever a third world country (with a somewhat decent economy) comes in the news for bad reasons. You have also seemingly missed the threads about space related failures and accidents related to this country here. Those will be interesting to read. There are very subtle terms being used in some comments like "their worldview" et cetera.

> genuine need for an Indian company CA

Should be for pretty much any country and those certs should be trusted like other certs are trusted!!! Otherwise change the way these chains/trusts work.

> since not every body can/wants to use Let's Encrypt or whatever.

No they don't. It's an American company. (Let's not begin about "non-profit" part of it).

crossroadsguy··on Woman charged with computer fraud due to scam CashApp account being in her name
It's a legal system, not a justice system. That distinction is the point. Legal systems are not meant to be for justice. It's to protect and empower the people already in power or in a position to buy and control power.
crossroadsguy··on Woman faces six years in prison over Cash App account she never opened
One of these days someone, or some people, will finally lose it and this time hopefully they aim away from the schools.
crossroadsguy··on What Is the Karakoram Anomaly?
They never bother to make an effort. All these decades and they still say "Gey-ndi" and "Jeena" and as if they will get constipated if they learn to pronouce country names correctly. It's not "Pack-istan. They just don't care. I am from India and whenever I hear any of them say that country name, or say Aef-gan-istan, or Eye-ran (that gan, ran are as in "run ran run"), I feel like reaching into the screen or the earpiece and deliver a hard one across one of the speaker's cheeks and hopefully being isnpired by Gey-ndi they'd offer the other one.

crossroadsguy··on Compromised LiteLLM 1.107.0 on PyPI Installs a Credential Stealer and Backdoor
All the sandbox-exec and all the Lulu rules are not going to protect against something like this.

At one point permission pop-up fatigue sets in we start giving any permission as if it's normal. We also become desensitised to isntalling tools: brew, npm, it becomes second nature.

"Oh, those 367 tools installed by package X? Yeah yeah, must be normal, that's how all these work now".

"Brew shows 59 packages outdated?". "Must upgrade". "Yeah, done. Perfect".

And the advent of agents and harnesses. It's not a matter of whether, it's when! OSes need to do something about it. Help users have complete separate "program space" at ease with better, easier, and lighter VMs if nothing else. I know, I know - Unix and Linux solved all this even before Alexander III of Macedon started wearing his nappies. Of course.

Maybe the choice was between the hideously designed paths and pathetically named fodlers of macos/osx so the authors just stuck to not adding to the madness.
crossroadsguy··on An ad-free Android TV
I recently discovered (I knew of it but had never tried) debrid and now I resent all the time I wasted on private trackers over the years. Next step is trying an easy and stable alternative to Stremio (which has been down the hill for quite some time). This serves both my laptop and my old fire stick (which is fire os ← android tv) as of now.
crossroadsguy··on DeepSeek just open-sourced its inference engine
VC and valuation (alone) backed success has never been dependent on a business or product being good. All that is needed is finding the bag holder(s), and the way our economy and financial systems are designed that's the core competancy of this system.
crossroadsguy··on Germany's far-right AfD: half a million internal documents leaked
Cloudflare now shows the blocker warning:

    Warning
    Suspected Phishing
This website has been reported for potential phishing.
So either that site is a bit shady (that I didn't notice) or people have been actively at work to paint is as shady.

But then I often see this for any source:

(source text not published for this record)
And the top also shows this

    SUPPORT THIS ARCHIVE — MONERO
    <and probbaly a monero address>
So can't really say.

So I think [flagged] for this source/post is rightly served, one way or the other.

crossroadsguy··on DeepSeek banned from U.S. federal civilian agencies under new DHS order
This is the American way. More often after WW2. The country routinely goes to wars to impose and enforce its businesses. They have been known to do this in the name of democracy, the culture, and quite often in the name of freedom. This time it's safety; and no, it's not a war, not yet anyway – that's why this ban is nothing in comparison. Had it not been China, I'd not put any of those off the table for the land of the free.
