I can't believe so many people think these wearables are "accurate"; then they wonder why they aren't losing or gaining weight when they go by the expenditure estimates on these.

A 2020 systematic review by Fuller et al. found that consumer wearables often perform poorly at estimating energy expenditure, even when they measure steps and heart rate reasonably well. Across brands like Apple, Garmin, Polar, and Withings, calorie burn estimates frequently showed substantial error, often in the 15–40% range and sometimes exceeding 50%. Wearables can still be useful for tracking trends, but not for precise calorie calculations.

protip: if you actually want to do better, look into "adaptive TDEE".

Same for diet and exercise.

They'll use flawed research to claim diet and exercise don't work for obesity, then the general public uses that research and claims, "Diet doesn't work for fat people."

Soon, everyone is convinced every guy with a trivial amount of weight to lose needs to be on GLP-1s.

subreddit specific mods can't ban you directly site wide, but they have tools through which they can report your second account for ban evasion, and if the automated system runs a check and finds you had an old banned account on the same sub, your new one is perma banned too.
faangguyindia··on Ask HN: What do you believe or not believe about AI?
I believe AI has already solved being underweight, or obese, or skinny fat, or simply fat, yet people are paying for scam solutions.

This is one of the biggest quality of life boosts provided by AI, yet many everyday people are completely unaware of this.

The price of an AI solution is $0, and within 2-3 weeks you'll know if it works for you or not.

Compare this to any fitness coaching, or dietician, or any other method, or even GLP-1s, the cost is not zero.

Many people who do not even need GLP-1s are using GLP-1s to lose a trivial amount of weight, even though their appetite regulation is not a problem!

The thing is, they are refusing to believe that it's even possible.

There are many people using steroids and peptides, if you put a starving person in famine affected sub Saharan Africa on steroids, can you have them return to normal weight without providing them additional food? But many "foolishly" believe this is possible with steroids and peptides without giving them more food.

Here's a thing

Users spend tokens on DeepSeek, Claude, and others -> generate variations of projects uploaded to GitHub -> Microsoft (GitHub's owner) -> trains LLMs on this -> ends up with better models.

No matter what model a user may use at any price point, microsoft can distill it.

It's distillation at a higher level

most good programmers aren't going to commit garbage solutions; they'll push it to a git remote once they see it actually solves a problem they are trying to solve, and since the git commits and their messages are also AI generated, you've good visibility into the user's intention and resulting edits to the codebase.

They want to capture it all.

Reddit is going the same way.

I know many people who have got banned and never managed to get back on Reddit because Reddit is using some very invasive and persistent banned user detection techniques.

Thing is, they use AI to ban people; over time, many false positives accumulate and not everyone has the time and energy to appeal bans.

Slowly, more and more user accounts get banned, and even technical people I know fail to make a new account which lasts more than 3-4 days.

But the Reddit management is seeing this as a "win," not able to see the consequence of doing this.

I don't blame anyone for being skeptical, it's a big claim specially to those who have failed in weight loss or weight gain.

It's free to test for anyone. We've got a community with 2,000+ members. We do not collect names, phone numbers, DOBs, or other sensitive info.

There are no ads, no subscription, and no paywall. We've got users, reviews, testimonials, etc., and several articles with research citations detailing how our method works.

What does a user stand to get scammed out of? What does a user lose if they give it a try?

What's more annoying is claiming all fat people have a common thinking pattern.

>The success of GLP-1 is based on the fact that the patient can eat less without suffering.

Suffering comes not from "dieting" but from not knowing calorie math and using too big of a deficit!

Run too big of a deficit = become miserable = blame dieting and stop halfway. Simply pick a deficit you can continue for long; it's the solution! Average woman may have TDEE around 1800-2000, she can eat 1700-1600kcal comfortably.

You know that if i remove 150kcal from your diet, your wouldn't notice? that's like 2 slices of bread. So the hunger suppression will never be a question for vast majority of fat people

150kcal deficit over a year = 7.1kg or 15.6 lbs lost! and 300kcal = 31.2lbs or 14.2kg!! all this without any injection or drug without any exercise or severe loss of lean masss

People know X matters, Y matters, and Z matters, but they do not know how much X matters in relation to Y and Z.

Similarly, a calorie deficit is the biggest driver, and it dwarfs all these other factors you listed.

A deficit so small that most users won't even know that they are at deficit!

When people say, "Dieting doesn't work," they almost never describe their dieting approach. How can all dieting be the same? In the majority of cases, people crash diet; they run an 800–1,000 kcal deficit, lose some weight early on, experience hair shedding and anxiety, weakness etc..., become irritable and miserable, and give up after a few weeks or a month or two. Then they blame dieting. They don't say, "My dieting approach failed," but "Dieting doesn't work." It's like scoring 10/100 on a math exam and saying, "Math doesn't work." Brother what? Everyday math is being by people with lot of success. Dieting is being used by MMA pros for weight cuts, natural bodybuillders, actors, models, 100s of thousands of ordinary people on fitness subs like r/caloriedefict r/naturalbodybuilding r/CICO

Very few people accept that maybe there is a flaw in their dieting. There are experienced people who study this stuff for years; how can I, as a newbie, learn all this in a short period of time, fail, and claim that dieting doesn't work?

faangguyindia··on Most advice is right for the person giving it
This isn't true once you've achieved your target weight through a calorie deficit.

Deficit and hence suffering no longer applies; you continue eating at maintenance, which is very comfortable.

faangguyindia··on Novo Nordisk, Eli Lilly Report GLP-1 Signals of Slowed Biological Aging at ARDD
In reality, though,

Crashing intakes tend to be self-regulating; you cannot really eat very little food for long periods without suffering.

GLP-1s make it very easy to crash your intake by simply injecting a higher dose, so the "negative effects" of crash dieting are easier acquire on GLP-1s for vast majority of population.

faangguyindia··on Novo Nordisk, Eli Lilly Report GLP-1 Signals of Slowed Biological Aging at ARDD
>Many here have expressed skepticism at GLP1s because they don't require the personal discipline

Personal discipline required for sustainable dieting is overblown.

People mostly crash diet in the name of dieting, then suffer and blame this suffering on "dieting."

Proper dieting is rare.

Even the weight loss studies which people often quote on how dieting/exercised failed obese people run 800–1,200 deficits, which make even an experienced dieter uncomfortable.

faangguyindia··on Novo Nordisk, Eli Lilly Report GLP-1 Signals of Slowed Biological Aging at ARDD
Many people go from obese to normal weight without any GLPs using a sustainable deficit and gradually building an active lifestyle. Their lean mass also increases due to a better macro-distributed, balanced diet, lifting, and a higher activity level (good for boosting TDEE).

>But my BMI was like 39, and now it is ~25. My blood test results the last couple of years have been phenomenal

If you’d lost the weight without GLP-1s, your blood test results would still have been phenomenal. Most of the effect you are seeing is the result of lowered bodyfat% through calorie deficit.

now, in your case calorie deficit comes from GLP1 use but in others case it can come from sustainable dieting which is little more tricky execute properly than just injecting a drug.

faangguyindia··on Novo Nordisk, Eli Lilly Report GLP-1 Signals of Slowed Biological Aging at ARDD
Weight loss requires a calorie deficit, and the average person has no training or education for this. Why would you expect them to be good at something they've had no education or training in? 40% obesity rate is not surprising when no education/training exists for average person.
faangguyindia··on Novo Nordisk, Eli Lilly Report GLP-1 Signals of Slowed Biological Aging at ARDD
>Being a healthy weight takes (for some) perfect discipline every day, ignoring hunger, putting weight management before everything else in your life, etc.

Why does eating at maintenance calories require “ignoring hunger”?

If a guy is already 80 kg, at 10% BF, and their maintenance calories are 3,000 kcal, they can be perfectly happy and not in a state of hunger while eating 3,000 kcal.

I maintain 10% BF at an FFMI of 25; I am almost never hungry while eating at maintenance.

> But life is short, and cutting weight can fuck with people’s mental and physical health a lot before things get better, so for those who need it, 100% do whatever it takes to get to a healthy weight first and then figure it out from there.

Only if you are running massive deficits, which is what most newbies/crash dieters do. Emotional, knee-jerk-style dieting is not sustainable dieting.
