imsaw··on Hand-picked selection of articles on AI fundamentals/concepts
Exploring Kaggle and participating in ML competitions is an excellent way of getting hands on experience.
imsaw··on A layoff fundamentally changed how I perceive work
Just got accepted on my first job last month. Yet, last week, company (>500 ppl) already announced some small layoffs.

Do you always lurk for opportunities outside the current company (maybe some roles are more stable)? If so, how to explain in the interview that you're currently employed somewhere but concerned of their stability?

imsaw··on Why is it so hard to find a job now? Enter Ghost Jobs
While I'm disappointed at the scientific merits of the paper, I'm glad it was posted here which invited discussion on this topic. Someone feeling frustrated with their job app right now might find a speculative answer here.

(Currently waiting for "final decision" on 2 interviews which went well, but after 3 weeks, I'm starting to feel they're ghosting me)

imsaw··on Show HN: Wall-mounted diffusion mirror that turns reflections into paintings
I think the low framerate adds a unique ambience, at least to me, watching the recorded videos. It gives time to appreciate the art style and generated features. It also feels like a time lapse of gradual changes. I could imagine it being annoying to look at in real time though.
imsaw··on Adobe's new image rotation tool is one of the most impressive AI tools seen
I thought this was one of those sarcastic headlines, highlighting the overuse of AI for basic processes.
imsaw··on The Downfall of DeviantArt
Another perspective of resources are tackling adversary bots. It's difficult to strike a balance between enough good features to have your platform likeable and useful for users while maintaining security from bad actors who'll find clever ways to exploit vulnerabilities.
imsaw··on Indonesia's e-bike shops are building their own batteries
They're distinct in Indonesian, the former is "solder" while the latter is "las". Most likely a technical assumption made by the author during his visit to the workshop
imsaw··on Maxar's Open Satellite Feed
For anyone interested in very high res Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) open data, Capella space also provides catalogues in STAC [1]. There's also ICEYE and Umbra space who provides sample data from each of their website.

imsaw··on Show HN: Open-source digital stylus with six degrees of freedom
I can see how pitch roll yaw would work, but I can't imagine how linear movements are made on the same joystick? Maybe up and down is push and pull but what about the other directions? Do you push the device itself?
imsaw··on PhD Simulator
I did this and was warned, but got some progress for work during shower
imsaw··on PhD Simulator
Shout out to other last year phd students out there! The storm will pass
imsaw··on Zotero Better Notes – Knowledge management inside Zotero
I also think an epub reader in zotero would make it a complete library manager. I used Calibre just for reading epubs, so I want to ask how and why do you need to sync its metadata with zotero?
imsaw··on Nvidia DGX GH200: 100 Terabyte GPU Memory System
From a personal use case, the number of instructions available in TPUs are still limited and some workaround is needed when designing custom layers. Even if it's available in platforms like Colab or Kaggle, people still lean to GPUs as it is more versatile.
imsaw··on A growing number of scientists are convinced the future influences the past
Interesting concept. I wonder if it's compared with spatial 3D space, then how large would the 4th dimension of time be if it were to fit the timeline of a human lifespan
imsaw··on Why WhatsApp Only Needs 50 Engineers for Its 900M Users (2015)
But given the many parties trying to grab a slice of our attention on the platform, wouldn't knowing the algorithm inputs produce more exploitations?
imsaw··on Not-so-great features coming soon to Windows 11
They're squeezing revenue from their large portion of users who are not technologically proficient to realize they're being exploited.
imsaw··on FreeTube – A Private YouTube Client
Just hit the / and go straight to the search bar (on a pc)
imsaw··on Satellite Video of Indonesia Earthquake [video]
Sketchy source. As if one of those few satellite company providing (short) video capability happens to focus the city (which is not even mentioned) during that unpredictable earthquake.

Given the nature of Indonesians, I'd not be surprised if this gets shared among WhatsApp family groups, since it came out recent to the Cianjur earthquake.

imsaw··on Body Doubling
Is this why people like working in a cafe?
imsaw··on Video gaming may be associated with better cognitive performance in children
I credit Dota 2 for the habbit of reading frequent changelogs and adaptation of new features (hero and item patches) and strategy.

Generally, multiplayer (competitive) games are exciting as we get the adrenaline rush from out smarting our opponent. But there's always a point where you feel the repetitiveness and lack of purpose as you get to the average level but not enough dedication to compete with professional atheletes.

imsaw··on The Portuguese can no longer afford to live in Portugal
Compared with the 2, how is Poland expensive?
imsaw··on Naomi Wu video demonetized on YouTube
>being able to encourage technical proficiency in a demographic that was not looking to learn anything

Great perspective. Most people (most likely not on HN's highly productive community) find it hard to stay focus following education materials.

Some content creators put soothing bg music, animations, funny jokes. Something to engage. It's an art, be creative of what you have.

imsaw··on Ask HN: Eating and coocking is so inneficient, better way?
Like everywhere in the world, it still depends on where you live. In capital cities, the working people sometimes live alone in their own/shared apartment, so cooking for yourself is less preferred since food stalls are affordable and almost everywhere.

But in small cities or villages, you usually live with your main family or even your big family, so it's cheaper to cook in large batches at home everyday.

I'd also confidently say (I'm Indonesian) that almost all house has a rice cooker, so you could count that as cooking right?
