niravs··on Downsides to working at a tech giant
good luck with getting into anything good with insane amounts of time & effort. capital is cheap.
niravs··on Ask HN: What business would you start in 2018?
Social apps. Neglected. Especially voice + social.
niravs··on WhatsApp co-founder tells everyone to delete Facebook
that's a scam and a fake account.
niravs··on Chefs and Soldiers Make Good Product Managers
this piece literally tells only half the story — the execution part.

what makes a great product manager is the raw product level insights and instincts that very few individuals have about the product itself and the direction the world is actually moving in.

this is basically the conjoined triangles of success kinda BS.

The Twitter app for iPad does an incredible job of solving the side-by-side portrait orientation split view problem. I wish the native mail app behaved like this.
niravs··on Meet news:yc, the open source Hacker News client for your iPhone.
Chad Etzel wrote a pretty good Android app already! It's super well done.

niravs··on Google Voice for iPhone Released
Not to mention placing calls. That's a huge part of the interface.
niravs··on Notifo (YC W10) adds Google Voice SMS notifications
What about voicemail transcriptions? These are sent by a slightly different address.
niravs··on Notifo (YC W10) adds Google Voice SMS notifications
Services on top of Prowl have been doing this in the exact same manner for quite some time. Glad to see a service like Notifo supporting this though. It has a somewhat nicer interface than the Prowl app.
niravs··on iPhone OS 4.0
Did you install 4.0 on a device you use regularly? If so, are there not many bugs hindering your usage? I've been thinking about doing this as well but Apple recommends against it.
niravs··on iPhone OS 4.0
More specifically, if you receive more than one notification, the former is pretty much lost. Your app icon is annotated with a number but you have no idea what happened if you have several icons already annotated.
niravs··on Browser Speed Tests: iPhone's Mobile Safari vs. Opera Mini
The speed is awesome but some of the UI elements really bug me. For example, there is no elastic scrolling unlike other all other iPhone apps. Although, somebody pointed out that Apple has a patent on "elastic scrolling" which may be a reason for Opera leaving it out. I bet you can't implement it outside of what the SDK provides you.

Also the multi-touch isn't as smooth as mobile safari.

niravs··on Experiences, Not Products, Provide Happiness
The above link requires you to pay to read the white paper. I found the PDF through the researcher's website in case if anyone is interested.

EDIT: Looks like it requires to have Google as the referrer. Simply search for the title and it's the first link.

niravs··on Opera Mini approved for iPhone
I'm shocked.

The app is still somewhat crippled though, all links from other Apps can only be opened in Safari. So, not the same as switching a browser on your desktop or laptop. Nonetheless it seems like a step in the right direction.

niravs··on Google to Open-source VP8 for HTML5 Video
Both Chrome & Firefox are supporting this from the beginning. It's certainly a great start.

This was posted few days ago for anyone who missed it.

niravs··on A new Google Docs
Dropbox API is on its way according to their forums.

Keep an eye out here: http://code.google.com/p/dropbox-api/

niravs··on A new Google Docs
Seems unlikely. It's awfully difficult to integrate an acquisition like EtherPad so quickly. I've read that they've been working on a real-time architecture from the ground up for a while. Plus, I think the Etherpad team joined Wave, not Docs.
niravs··on 19 days later, Apple still hasn't approved the Opera Mini app
What if Opera gains significant share on the iPhone? Now Apple doesn't have as much leverage against Google.

That's really what I meant to say.

niravs··on 19 days later, Apple still hasn't approved the Opera Mini app
I highly doubt this will be approved. There is no way Apple is letting a third party come and play on their turf in the mobile browser market. Not to mention this would mean Apple would not have full control of who the default search provider is.
niravs··on [dead]
They've been doing it for a while now. Many content companies & individuals drive traffic through YouTube by providing small clips. Even Viacom did this (which is one of Google's arguments against them in the copyright case).
niravs··on New iPhone Agreement Bans Flash-to-iPhone Compiler & Others
If everybody's C starts to look like what Chicken Scheme generates then you've (Apple) just detected Chicken Scheme.
niravs··on IPhone OS 4.0 unveiled, adds multitasking, shipping this summer
As I suspected, iAd API's are tightly coupled with the OS and dead simple to utilize. I just wrote a sample app. Too bad Apple won't allow further discussions on the subject matter. Everyone who views the new beta API references are under NDA.
niravs··on IPhone OS 4.0 unveiled, adds multitasking, shipping this summer
This was detailed in the presentation. Using Google's Admob ads presumably will not be as seamless of an experience for the app developer.

It'll be harder to implement things like keeping the user in the app while viewing the ad or adding video/photos.

What if using Apple's ad network is few lines of code? No library to import, or have a 3rd party dependency on your app.

niravs··on IPhone OS 4.0 unveiled, adds multitasking, shipping this summer
Serious limitations and certainly by no means a seamless experience. For example, you can't get updates on SMS messages unless you use a hack (like Prowl).

Or you can use the iPad simulator (if you have the SDK).
niravs··on CloudApp is live
To make this work somewhat seamlessly, check out DropZone. It's a pretty cool mac app that allows all sorts of stuff to happen around drag and drop.

(It has a Dropbox extension as well)

It was extremely unintuitive to figure out how to delete files (you have to hover over the icon, and an x will appear).
