redbeard0x0a··on What would you pay for autonomous driving? Volkswagen hopes $8.50 per hour
It wont be banned, it will just cost much more to insure (since it will be directly tied to risk, computers already drive better than humans). If you drive manually, you will need to pay for the privilege.
redbeard0x0a··on Texas was minutes away from months-long power outages, officials say
Just want to say that I am a griddy customer, I don't do it for the absolute lowest cost, but the ability to see and respond to pricing via home automation. A way to hack my electric bill. This week has definitely sucked in terms of cost. Griddy is also introducing contract rates next month, so some amount of power can be purchased at a predicted rate and you get that power at that rate, not the spot price until you run out of that contracted amount of power. (I only know the vague details of the program, just fyi).

Also, this is a regulation failure because the PUCT (or whatever it is called), which is under the purview of the Railroad Commissioner (an elected position), didn't make recommended winterization guidelines mandatory. Without this, the market favors the biggest corner cutting.

For some vehicles, yes.

Such as:

But getting into the honda accord, toyota camry, these are the ICE vehicles that are going to be crazy cheap.

redbeard0x0a··on Rolling blackouts in California have power experts stumped
Its not just overall grid usage, substations have capacities as well. So the business park is going to be underutilized, but the residential ones are probably seeing more demand as people are at home and not turning up the thermostat during the day to save energy (since they are at home and want a comfortable environment, vs. letting the house sit at 80 when nobody is home).

This _is_ a cost cutting measure. They decided not to pay for their software to support red eyes.

redbeard0x0a··on How the Nintendo Switch prevents downgrades by irreparably blowing its own fuses
> So are you absolutely sure that I can buy Nintendo stuff today and get games from anywhere in the world?

Yes, I have a UK switch that I got (it was the diablo bundle), I have a uk switch account and a us switch account. Diablo works fine. All my us purchased switch games (physical) and downloaded games from the us store on this uk switch.

Please don't discount other other groups experiencing systemic racism. This is another example of systemic racism, but it's not any more or less real than systemic racism against people of color.
redbeard0x0a··on New Facebook tool allows employers to suppress “unionize” in workplace chat
Where did the closed shop restrictions come from, did it come from anti-union lobbying or some think tank somewhere? This smells completely like "the government is useless", then going in and defunding things that the government is responsible for.

redbeard0x0a··on Coronavirus may mean automation is coming sooner than we thought
something is going to give somewhere, either we get something like temp/perm UBI, contact tracing, pervasive testing. Each of these things has their pros/cons and the last 2 have "slippery slope" implications with privacy and/or bodily autonomy. The first has the "slippery slope" implications the right complains about, but I don't believe a UBI would lead to a massive outbreak of lazy. It _would_ lead to a massive outbreak of people leaving BS jobs - especially if we get healthcare fixed.
redbeard0x0a··on Microsoft buys corp.com so bad guys can’t
So, would you be ok with corporations selling things that are slightly radioactive? The average consumer isn't going to understand the implications and risks of such products. What makes a smoke detector safe vs. glowing paint that killed a lot of people painting watch hands/marks with it?
redbeard0x0a··on A Message to Our Users
> enterprises around the world have done exhaustive security reviews

I'm pretty sure they are referring to security reviews for things like SOC2 and PCI. Which aren't exhaustive and generally consist of throwing a scanner on the network and running some sort of WASP top 10 vulnerability tester against the product. I have uncovered major flaws in products I have written that these "extensive reviews" have missed, like user enumeration by changing something in a POST request.

redbeard0x0a··on Coke and Pepsi are getting sued for lying about recycling
You gotta speak in the language that corporations understand. Lawsuits and regulations...
redbeard0x0a··on Coke and Pepsi are getting sued for lying about recycling
If I recall correctly, its like 5% of the energy to use aluminum scrap vs. ore.
redbeard0x0a··on Coke and Pepsi are getting sued for lying about recycling
Recycling Aluminum cans is actually much easier and better for the environment. If I recall correctly, it takes about 5% of the energy to make aluminum from recycled sources vs. from ore.

The fact that you can take cans into a recycler and get paid for them is a _really_ good indicator that recycling aluminum works.

redbeard0x0a··on App Used to Tabulate Votes Is Said to Have Been Inadequately Tested
We are talking ~1700 users for the app, maybe closer to 2000 if you factor in various other people watching the data for reporting.

That doesn't matter, 1700 users posting updates to numbers isn't something that would be difficult to write and test properly.

Either replace the filters or use the bypass cartridge. You don't want to leave a filter in forever so you don't get bacteria growing in your drinking water.
