sgt··on Ask HN: What's your current AI agentic setup?
Claude Code Ultra aka 20x Max, about $250/mo incl VAT that I have to pay
sgt··on Moving our warehouse off DuckDB
What's wrong with ClickHouse again?
sgt··on The future in old computer magazines (1984–2004)
Love reading old computer magazines. In particular MacWorld, MacUser, Linux Journal, etc.
sgt··on Ask HN: Can a NTFS driver for macOS be vibecoded?
Depends what you mean by vibecoding. You need to deeply understand NTFS and filesystems in order to "vibe code" a driver. In other words, if you wouldn't be able to hand code one (given enough time and effort, of course, which would be tremendous), you wouldn't be able to instruct an AI to do so either.
sgt··on Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy?
The answer is really simple and this gets asked a lot.

Buy any TV, don't connect it to the Internet. Then connect the HDMI or DP to Apple TV and you're good to go.

sgt··on Patrick Stewart taught us what good men do with power
Probably for the most part, but I'm pretty sure he added some of that leadership quality and way of being to the part due to him being Patrick. There's also probably some improv here and there. Pity about his kids though. Hope they had a better relationship in the later years.
sgt··on What is a light-day? The milestone Voyager 1 is closing in on
Of course, I wouldn't want to slow down once I got to the Oort cloud as it's probably remarkably empty. Maybe planet 9?
sgt··on Restrooms along the Norwegian Scenic Routes
Old Rome had the best shithouses though. A whole row of toilets which made the experience very social and intimate.
sgt··on What is a light-day? The milestone Voyager 1 is closing in on
Actually - to reach the start of the Oort Cloud from Earth it'd take around 4 hours. That's 2000 AU. The observer on Earth will see it as about 12 days. This is assuming 99.99% of the speed of light which is completely unrealistic of course.
sgt··on Enlightenment 0.28 Released with Many Improvements
I saw it, it's actually pretty cool. But I suspect it's a very niche thing, and you might see someone build a third party extension.

Most people agree that a screen should feel like a physical desk where windows can pile, overlap, and scatter naturally. Would you use a tiling "system" for your physical desk? I highly doubt it.

Niri's infinite scrolling approach makes that into a rigid filmstrip sequence. It might be interesting for some people though.

sgt··on Prospero: A new coding harness for a more civilized age
Sounds even worse (and I'm generally not a fan of speech to text interfaces, as typing is a lot quicker and easier on the brain); imagine a co-worker or your wife steps in and asks a question, your "Yes" turns into an answer to your coding agent.
sgt··on What is a light-day? The milestone Voyager 1 is closing in on
Well, consider that the speed of light itself is pretty slow, relative to what people's perception of the speed of light is. Even if you had a spaceship traveling at 99.99%, it'd take a surprisingly long time even to reach the Oort cloud.

In the late 90s our desktops on Linux literally looked like this [1]. Of course, that seems to have become lost to history. I bet E is still themable but you have to go back to 1999 when it was super exciting.

(In fact, it's kind of funny and sad that the state of the Linux desktop and the ambition level hasn't really changed much in 25 years)

sgt··on Show HN: To Honor Sir Patrick Stewart, Enjoy the TNG Episode Guessing Game
As a long time TNG fan, I know the episodes fairly well (noticable when I rewatch them, I notice new things every time), there's one thing I've never really paid attention to and that's the episode names. So I completely fail this game.
sgt··on French national assembly votes 0.055€/GB internet tax
By the way, why on Earth is GTA 210GB? That's insane.
sgt··on Binance-hacker-1029 – $5.6B stolen from Binance
That's actually not as unlikely as you'd think.
sgt··on Patrick Stewart has died
And moments that were philosophical and put things in perspective as humans [1].

sgt··on The Grid, a factory-scale robot in Massachusetts that builds PCBs on demand
Can't you just design better PCB's without weird parts that are likely to be out of stock? Adds to resilience.
sgt··on Mac Studio M5 Ultra 512GB Officially Released
Been waiting for this!
sgt··on New iMac with M6
Exactly - I've looked at a lot of monitors. Including top end Dells, one of which I have currently. But nothing that I see beats the Studio Display at its price point. Also 60Hz is perfectly fine on that screen, maybe 60Hz feels different on others for those who feel this is inadequate.
sgt··on Unveiling The Grid: PCBs made in America, twice as fast as Shenzhen
But for prototyping, paying extra for quick turnaround is often very sensible
sgt··on Ghostty 1.4
That is a concern yeah. But I think less of an issue as Mitchell has the Zig team on speed dial.
sgt··on Ghostty 1.4
I'm a GNU screen guy but I generally don't run it locally as that's.. what you have tabs for :)
sgt··on Ghostty 1.4
Probably something to do with Zig. Zig changes so quickly that if you're not using exactly the compiler that they are using, it's unlikely to work.
sgt··on Ghostty 1.4
Now if I could only upgrade it without powering down my current Ghostty

Cool, look at this list titled Digital:

  - Staff mass storage 6A (not sure what this means)
  - Decide on ECC
  - Release DMA revision A in November
  - Release CPU PCB revision A in November

Steve with Ross Perot here

Btw this image viewer - per page, is extremely sluggish and slow.

sgt··on JetBrains Thinkrail
JetBrains Air somehow makes me think of AirBrains
sgt··on fheroes2: A recreation of Heroes of Might and Magic II game engine
Okay, there's no soul. But clearly there's a massive difference between say, Monkey Island 1 and some remake sloppily vibe coded over a month. I just see a lot of that these days.

People taking the shortcut to build new games - and for what purpose, I wonder? To satisfy themselves or they really think that vibe coded games will be memorable for the next generations.
