steveax··on Myths of Color Contrast Accessibility
Sim Daltonism is another:

steveax··on Myths of Color Contrast Accessibility
Depending on the markup, the second example in “myth 6” is flat out wrong as the author ignores one of the failure modes for color only - unless there is an accessible name on those success/failure dots, screen reader users are SOL.
steveax··on Making Tables Responsive with Minimal CSS
One note: in demo 2, visibility: hidden will make screen readers ignore the headings.

steveax··on Insurers Know How Often American Drivers Touch Their Phones
For a while due to a bike trail closure, I pedaled across the Sellwood bridge. Because reasons, I took the south sidewalk and had a great view of oncoming eastbound drivers. I saw many drivers holding/operating their phones, by my limited data it was around 1 in 10. Terrifying.
steveax··on U.S. Web Design System 2.0
The axe extension is very nicely done: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/axe/lhdoppojpmngad...
steveax··on Base Web, Uber’s New Design System for Building Websites in React
There are accessibility issues beyond the landmark elements. For instance the close button on the drag and drop example has no accessible name.
steveax··on Stepping Away from Sass
Note the date on that. It’s my understanding that with modern browsers, except in pathological cases, selector performance is pretty much a non issue.
steveax··on How to Survive a Nuclear War: The York Experiment
And here we are in 2018 on the cusp of what is looking to be a new nuclear arms race. It’s two minutes to midnight:

steveax··on Evernote just slashed 54 jobs, or 15 percent of its workforce
Am I the only one that wants to puke when I hear/read how hard it was for the exec team to decide to lay people off?

It seems like empathy 101 to me to not make the layoff of an employee about you, the one that made the decision to probably throw their life into chaos, but it seems to be almost ubiquitous in these announcements.

steveax··on Mortgage rates have been rising at a pace not seen in almost 50 years
Yeah, there’s less of a relationship between those than one would think. Slightly related: it’s time to phase out the mortgage interest deduction and plow that revenue into affordable housing.
steveax··on Ask HN: Which books have made you introspect?
Yes, this book changed how I think about death, and life so much.

steveax··on Tempe Police Release Video of Uber Accident
Yeah, but you don’t operate an automobile by looking at a video display.
steveax··on Tempe Police Release Video of Uber Accident
Video has shit dynamic range compared to the human eye.
steveax··on Police Say Uber Is Likely Not at Fault for Self-Driving Car Fatality in Arizona
Yeah, the “may have been homeless“ line really pisses me off. Such a blatant bullcrap attempt to devalue a human life.
steveax··on Worker-owned businesses: 'We get paid the same regardless of role'
That’s what Bob and Charlee did with Bob’s Red Mill when he decided to retire:

steveax··on Tell HN: Slack decides to close down IRC and XMPP gateways
All good points there, and agreed about automated testing, I think the most you can hope for in that department is linting level testing (color contrast, valid html, associated labels and form controls, etc.)

The hard things like focus control require manual testing, ideally by a skilled user of AT.

steveax··on Apple Maps vs. Google Maps vs. Waze
I think it may be fixed now but drivers were making left turns from there (SE 6th and Tacoma, Portland, OR) for months. The left turn there is only for cyclists and when the cars stacked up it made for very sketchy biking. As for me having the responsibility of fixing bad directions, that’s exactly (part of) the externality I’m objecting to. Why, as a resident of that neighborhood is it my job to help fix it?
steveax··on Apple Maps vs. Google Maps vs. Waze
“Washboard” is the common term for that phenomenon. You can mitigate it by driving faster than you should, but you’ll have basically zero traction.
steveax··on Apple Maps vs. Google Maps vs. Waze
Pretty sure from some limited sampling that waze is responsible for this cluster [1]. If you zoom in you can see the right-turn only sign at the intersection. What you cannot really see is that two blocks of cars waiting all have their left-turn signals on (well, the ones that bothered to signal).

I really dislike some of the externalities created by waze.

steveax··on Craft Beer Is the Strangest, Happiest Economic Story in America
They typically take longer to finish as well.

That said, I’ve been encouraged by more lagers from craft breweries showing up. There are some terrific ones that have been around for a long time too, say Prima Pils from Victory.

steveax··on Union Is Formed at Los Angeles Times and Publisher Put on Leave
I would suggest that not honoring a picket line was a concrete demonstration of your opinion of unions whether you realized that at the time or not.
steveax··on North Carolina Is Ordered to Redraw Its Congressional Map
And being able to produce the qualifying documents for the ID. There’s a non-trivial number of people (usually older, lower income) that do not possess, nor have ever needed to possess before, a birth certificate.
