tlburke··on Bypassing Firewalls in macOS Big Sur
Ah excuse me for that. 2 years of additional lifespan is still painfully short for a deprecated OS. Even free OSes like Ubuntu LTS get more years of support than versions of macOS (Ubuntu LTS release cycle of 2 years minus 5 years of support = 3 years of additional support after deprecation).
tlburke··on Bypassing Firewalls in macOS Big Sur
You can stay on an older version for a little while, maybe a year at most until it stops getting patches. Then you get to make the choice of using an OS that's vulnerable to exploits and an OS with a gigantic backdoor in it.
tlburke··on Does Apple really log every app you run? A technical look
It's worth noting that Google, the big bad guys of privacy, uses a proper E2E encryption scheme.
tlburke··on [dead]
It's been a while since I've used macOS but its firewall is one of the worst I've ever used, it might as well not even exist. It lets everything through by default, prevents you from restricting Apple software and doesn't include any kind of cafe mode for hotels and airports so everyone's devices are always visible and communicating.
tlburke··on Google Photos will end its free unlimited storage in June 2021
That's exactly what happened to my mother, she owns an iPad and an iPhone and she's constantly being squeezed for money because her two devices' backups max out her storage. She rarely takes photos and doesn't upload anything to iCloud drive, it's just her backups.
tlburke··on iFixit finds iPhone 12 camera repair impossible without proprietary Apple tool
It's unsurprising, but it's also another nail in the 'the restrictions on users are for security purposes' coffin. Not allowing 3rd party replacements of the entire mainboard? Okay, understandable. The battery? Mmmmaybe if you're imaginative enough (replacing the battery in a VIP's phone that's rigged to explode). But the camera? Who does this protect?
tlburke··on YouTube-dl has received a DMCA takedown from RIAA
I don't think anybody really disagrees that redistribution is a copyright violation and the youtube-dl software doesn't provide any facilities for uploading or re-broadcasting content. This takedown is completely frivilous.
tlburke··on Covid: Remdesivir 'has little or no effect' on survival, says WHO
Well Remdesivir was originally developed as a treatment for Ebola before the current pandemic, so it isn't a specialized treatment for COVID-19. The fact that it has small and diffuse effects was totally predictable.
tlburke··on Apple Terminates Epic Games' Developer Account
If Apple wants to make their own users hostages that's their choice and Epic shouldn't bend to it. Apple has totally shattered the illusion that their walled garden model is about Security and not Control.
tlburke··on Security Bulletin VLC 3.0.11
Crown prince of Saudi Arabia hacked Jeff Bezos's phone by sending him a video over WhatsApp, so its definitely something that agencies are already hard at work on.
tlburke··on Google to restrict modern ad blocking Chrome extensions to enterprise users
Google Chrome (desktop) does not contain ads/"suggested content" on the New Tab page. For that reason alone I'll continue using Chromium on desktop until they actually pull the trigger and remove/neuter uBO.
tlburke··on At 30, Game Boys live on in unexpected ways
Yeah the original BW gameboy used a modified Z80 which was old even in 1989. It took 4 AA batteries and had twice the battery life of the 6-battery (?) Game Gear.
tlburke··on Ask HN: What is the best “dumb” phone?
They have a 3G model, I'm using right now! They also have a 4G 8110 "Bananaphone" that runs KaiOS, a sort of 'inbetween' smart-and-dumb phone.
tlburke··on CDE – Common Desktop Environment
You could probably get very close with a well-configured twm or fvwm2
tlburke··on How Google Chrome’s ad blocker works
No. In fact, Rader was once considered to be a pillar of the community.
