varispeed··on Gemini 4 Carbon
Imgur is not available in the UK due to censorship.
varispeed··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
Here they offer no finance for over £5k. Crap.
varispeed··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
I bought a laptop for a relative and didn't realise it doesn't have touchscreen. They complained for a day and I often saw them try to touch the screen and then being disappointed it doesn't work. Week later they never mentioned it again and use the laptop just fine.

When I was buying them a second one and asked about touchscreen, they said they don't care anymore for it, so second laptop also was without touchscreen.

varispeed··on MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch
I like how I can see its screen quality on my screen.
varispeed··on New 14‑inch MacBook Pro with M6
It's not justifying an upgrade. Shame there are no finance options for M5 Max 128GB.

What is this for? I cannot understand these models. They are very much polluting the internet with nonsense and use capacity that people and businesses need for actual work.

If these are the cause of why I have to pay 2-4x I used to for a computer, then Google should go fuck themselves.

varispeed··on SIMD-accelerated computer vision on a $2 microcontroller
Because these are normal instructions.

If you do multiplication using mul instead of loop and add, is it acceleration too?

varispeed··on SIMD-accelerated computer vision on a $2 microcontroller
Why is it still called SIMD-accelerated, if these are now just normal instructions. You just have to take a little bit more effort into restructuring your algorithms to make use of them.
varispeed··on Now Google says it might use your Gmail and Google Photos data to target ads
Well, if we didn't have corrupt regulators, Google would have been fined out of existence ages ago.

That said it will be interesting way of exploitation. If you want to find people who have certain email content, you can serve them ads manipulating them into taking an action. Like buying a scam product / malware.

varispeed··on Run full iOS 16.5 firmware on Android Devices
They could implement Grapple Store and then clone most popular apps.
varispeed··on PHP2Shell: AI uncovers critical RCE in PHP
They guess the next token based on probability which is derived from training data.
varispeed··on PHP2Shell: AI uncovers critical RCE in PHP
Many exploits are used by security services, so this gives time to wrap any investigations or surveillance or find another method of accessing target servers.
varispeed··on PHP2Shell: AI uncovers critical RCE in PHP
If AI "uncovered" it, that means it was already in the training data and likely exploited in the wild.
varispeed··on PHP 8.2.35
Why they can't publish an expoit so people can run it against their own servers to check the impact?
varispeed··on The No Kings Takedown Is Why You Shouldn't Rent Your Megaphone from Zuck
I think people in the West have little experience living under totalitarian regime.

Typical ways of overcoming censorship is creating own lingo, so that it goes past censors or distribution of physical leaflets, underground press and organising resistance offline.

Thank you!
varispeed··on Apple broke an essential presentation feature of iPads
That reminds me of hotmail's 50GB limit that cannot be changed. This created so much pain for some non-technical people I know (missed important emails, then having to spend days deliberating what to delete etc)
varispeed··on Voxtral 3
How can I download the model to try or am I misunderstanding something?
varispeed··on Apple broke an essential presentation feature of iPads
Probably simplest solution is to keep current behaviour and get a second iPad for notes.
varispeed··on MiniMax M3.1 Flash
The comparisons with models like GPT-5.6 or Opus are pointless because they vary substantially. They are often nerfed shortly after release and then performance is not consistent. One day model will be doing relatively fine, another it will be dumb as markov generator. In that regard self hosted models are better, because you know what is running your requests.
varispeed··on I no longer care to work on any Ruby gems so I've archived all my repositories
> In that context, I no longer feel inspired to contribute to a commons that’s being strip-mined by massive corporations

Open-source was always strip-mined by massive corporations. It was main source of free labour for decades.

Unfortunately there are always people willing to subsidise these corporations with their time for a badge of "honour" and few pats on the back.

Great to see more people awaken to the fact corporations thrive on unpaid work whilst making billions for their shareholders.

I am yet to see this trickle down wink

varispeed··on Source code of the Estonian online voting system
> The public needs to believe it, and hypertechnical solutions are a hard sell.

Public doesn't need to know the details. Production of paper, printers is quite complex and so production of the pen. Yet people are not concerned about that when voting and we don't publish schematics of a printer that printed the ballots.

varispeed··on The Commodore 64 hardware simulator: break chips and pins, see the results
> Please note that even on fast computers this program struggles to simulate the C64 hardware at real speed. A real C64 is simulated at 31% of its speed on an Apple M3 Max, 39% on an AMD Ryzen AI Max+ PRO 495 (Gorgon Halo), and 48% on an Apple M5 Max

Key takeaway is why FPGA is still useful. Even modern CPUs can't handle certain seemingly simple data processing tasks in realtime.

varispeed··on DeepSeek-v4.1-Flash-1017
Remember when we were dumbfounded why our service is slow despite having implemented quite robust caching mechanism. Turns out simply the flag that enables it was hardcoded to false. So it was minor update (changed flag to true), but provided substantial speed up.
varispeed··on Tesla Roadster
> and that's gonna make crashes much more.. exciting

It's not like they care about lives. After all Musk throttled Starlink in Ukraine and that resulted in many civilian deaths. Anyone buying this is supporting this behaviour.

varispeed··on Tesla Roadster
As per Telegraph Musk has offered Trump the idea to slow down the Starlink, which resulted in deaths of many civilians.

Whatever you think about these advancements (like you could marvel at Nazi inventions), make no mistake. Musk and his Tesla should get fucked.

Whenever I say that the rich have access to much more capable and unrestricted models I get downvotes. Yet here we have another example.
varispeed··on AI-assisted PCB design for KiCad 10
Believe it or not "it works" is actually incredibly high standard. Many commercial products are released after meeting the "I can't believe it works" threshold.
varispeed··on Tiny Little Office
I opened Word Processor, wrote "here" as instructed and nothing was happening.
varispeed··on Gemini 4 Argon
Because Google models are crap. They are on par with local shit models. Last time I tried they were unable to even hold a longer conversation, because they would enter loop and reiterate last answer regardless of the prompt etc.

Then basic mistakes (inferring wrong information from the given text, hallucinations...). Gemini is okay for some absolute basics and the rest of the work goes to actual frontier models.
