arm··on Keyboard differences between Windows and Macs
Sorry, what are you talking about?

I see on that Apple keyboard:

• two control keys

• two option keys

• two command keys

• delete (aka backspace)

• forward delete (aka delete)

• home

• end

• page up

• page down

arm··on Physical disc production ending in Jan 2028 for new games on PlayStation
Even that Nintendo Switch 2 Game-Key Card implementation still works better for parent’s game reselling use case (for a limited time) than outright removing the physical media option as Sony is doing.

From the link you posted:

“Game-key cards are different from regular game cards, because they don’t contain the full game data. Instead, the game-key card is your "key" to downloading the full game to your system via the internet.

After it’s downloaded, you can play the game by inserting the game-key card into your system and starting it up like a standard physical game card. An internet connection is only required when you launch the game for the first time. After this, the game can be started even without an internet connection. However, like regular physical software, the game-key card must be inserted into the system in order to play the game. A Nintendo Account is not required to download the game data.”

So lending and reselling game-key cards is still possible in the same way as physical media… at least until Nintendo’s servers stop serving the game, heh.

> (No good music players for MacOS for instance)

Have to strongly disagree on this point. Cog¹ is my music player of choice on macOS; not only does it have a clean GUI, but it supports almost every format² I’ve ever wanted to listen to audio in, including game music in formats like GBS (Game Boy Sound System) and 2SF (Nintendo DS Sound Format).

It’s mentioned in the first paragraph:

“We are proud to announce that starting the firmware version 0.82, your Flipper Zero's battery life will last up to 1 month! It took us 2 years to resolve all firmware issues that prevented Flipper Zero from switching to power-saving mode, resulting in the same power consumption baseline in both idle and active states. As a result, Flipper Zero's battery life was approximately 1 week instead of the intended 1 month.”

arm··on “Invalid Username or Password”: a useless security measure (2014)
> You can provide a more helpful error message by explicitly informing the user that the username they typed exists but they haven't offered the correct password for it.

The parent poster already addressed that though:

“If you mistype your username, you might have entered another, existing username. Just telling the user 'wrong password' will mean they are less likely to check that the username was correct.”

If you inform the user the username they typed exists, the chance of them not thinking about double-checking they didn’t mistype their own username increases.

arm··on Proposed class action alleges that Apple tracks users despite privacy assurances
“In the 2010s, personal data belonging to millions of Facebook users was collected without their consent by British consulting firm Cambridge Analytica, predominantly to be used for political advertising.

The data was collected through an app called "This Is Your Digital Life", developed by data scientist Aleksandr Kogan and his company Global Science Research in 2013. The app consisted of a series of questions to build psychological profiles on users, and collected the personal data of the users’ Facebook friends via Facebook's Open Graph platform. The app harvested the data of up to 87 million Facebook profiles.

[…]

Aleksandr Kogan, a data scientist at the University of Cambridge, was hired by Cambridge Analytica, an offshoot of SCL Group, to develop an app called "This Is Your Digital Life" (sometimes stylized as "thisisyourdigitallife"). Cambridge Analytica then arranged an informed consent process for research in which several hundred thousand Facebook users would agree to complete a survey for payment that was only for academic use. However, Facebook allowed this app not only to collect personal information from survey respondents but also from respondents’ Facebook friends. In this way, Cambridge Analytica acquired data from millions of Facebook users.”

Guessing it’s something the moderation team does when they feel a submission didn’t get enough traction the first time.

arm··on A cross platform front-end GUI of the popular YouTube-dl written in wxPython
There are workarounds (detailed very nicely in dirkf’s pull request for youtube-dl):

https://github.com/ytdl-org/youtube-dl/pull/30184

Pasting the content here for convenience:

Since summer 2021, YouTube has started serving media URLs with a query parameter such as …&n=SXiXBH-xzrjeioPN&…. This now appears to be the default behaviour. Unless the value of this parameter is transformed according to an algorithm delivered in the site player JS, the download speed for the URL is throttled to ~50kB/s.

Solutions for this include:

• implementing a more complete JS interpreter, eg based on PR [jsinterp] Actual JS interpreter¹ #11272;

• using an external JS interpreter (PhantomJS, now unmaintained, is used by some extractors);

• spoofing the Android or iOS client to acquire unthrottled links, as successfully implemented in yt-dlp².

This PR takes a different approach derived from the successful solution used in VLC's youtube.lua (also implemented differently in pytube³). The approach relies on the fact that the challenge algorithm is served in a mini-language within the minified player JS and therefore the specific algorithm can be extracted and executed by interpreting the mini-language without actually running the JS itself. [In parallel with this PR, a separate implementation of this approach was added to yt-dlp⁴.]

The implementation of the mini-language interpreter is directly translated from VLC's n_descramble() Lua function⁵. The result sufficiently resembles the original that it should be straightforward to share changes between the two implementations.

With Finder defaults, I can see what you mean, but after turning on Show Path Bar (with either ⌥⌘P or View → Show Path Bar), Finder is much nicer to use.

As for quickly navigating to your home directory, you can either spam ⌘↑ (or Go → Enclosing Folder) to go up to parent directories, or simply use ⇧⌘H (or Go → Home) to go straight to your home directory.
