cassianoleal··on Ask HN: What in the world is taking Ubuntu so long?
Perhaps that's the problem? Surely they use a version control system that allows them to branch off of older commit for these kinds of urgent patches.
cassianoleal··on Promethevs: Full DeepSeek-v4.1-Flash-1017, locally, on 12GB of VRAM
Surely local hosting is not so much about cost savings as it is about data ownership and risk management. e.g. can't leak a secret if you're not calling out.

cassianoleal··on Kemi Badenoch says Africans should apologise for slavery
I lived to see Paulo Freire shared on Hacker News. Thank you, Internet stranger. I wish I had more upvotes to give you.
cassianoleal··on 'It's just vape, nail, charity shops': Can anything save UK high street?
I wish they'd replace the chippies with cannabis dispensaries here. Though then they might need to open new chippies to serve the stoners. Win-win, maybe?
cassianoleal··on Osewa – An open-source alternative to SSH and Mosh
I had the same thought. Probably bad phrasing, the author might not be a native English speaker.
cassianoleal··on Sam Altman's Case Against Your RAM Is Efficient. That's the Problem
> Socialism vs Capitalism models

This is literally one of the world's largest capitalists. The cognitive dissonance is deafening...

cassianoleal··on Sam Altman's Case Against Your RAM Is Efficient. That's the Problem
Hopefully he doesn't work out either, since that just means he'll have to eat more, which makes him inefficient. He should live on as few calories as he can. Probably get bound to a chair with the computer screen right in front of him, Wall-E-style, and a tube of Soylent delivering it directly to his stomach in the exact measure.
cassianoleal··on Sam Altman's Case Against Your RAM Is Efficient. That's the Problem
I believe it is indeed inefficient for the entire (observable) universe to have a Sam Altman.
cassianoleal··on Revolut moves to self-hosted GLM
> At some point, they'll stop releasing models for free and will need a license.

Is this a guess, or do you have any information to back that inference (no pun intended)?

cassianoleal··on Revolut moves to self-hosted GLM
"Frontier labs" makes it sound like there's some special sauce to these companies. There isn't, other than very smart people working on problems.

Guess who else has that? The Chinese companies developing open weight models. In fact, the vast majority of AI science comes from China. They might still be playing catch up in some areas, but they're also leading in others (famously DeepSeek's inference architecture as an example).

There is IMO a non-trivial chance those labs will eventually surpass the US ones and become themselves "frontier", and that may happen sooner than a lot of people expect.

Of course, it still remains to be seen if they will keep publishing the weights at that point.

cassianoleal··on WiCi: Connecting GPUs over WiFi
Some of the things I have managed to find.

- It's GPU-over-WiFi. It shows up as a native, connected GPU on the client computer. I have no idea what drivers are required for this, or which OSs are supported

- It supports multiple users - i.e. multiple client devices can be connected to the same WiCi host device at the same time. I have no idea how it manages load across noisy neighbours.

- It can run DeepSeek V4 Flash. I don't know how well.

Maybe other things less relevant that I can't recall.

It seems like an interesting concept and product. I don't know how well it holds up, and it would be a very expensive gamble!

cassianoleal··on The Ford Privacy Promise: You're in Control of Your Data
Generating data is good, as long as it's limited to metrics about the vehicle and its use. It can help diagnose issues. It doesn't have to leave the vehicle though. Garages can simply read it locally when required.
cassianoleal··on Patrick Stewart taught us what good men do with power
This very much. Post-Roddenberry Trek mostly misses the point.

cassianoleal··on Brazilian Court Sanctions Lawyers for Prompt Injection in Court Filing
In async form it's usually very easy to quickly search for the meaning of an expression.

> But the Portuguese have much more trouble understanding Brazilians

I never had that issue. Some expressions don't translate but most are understandable just fine. Also with the spread of Brazilian novelas and music in Portugal, they're not only getting more familiar but are even starting to adopt a lot of our jargon.

cassianoleal··on Pi Is the Last Harness

That's kind of the point of Pi in the first place.

Don't feed the trolls, please.
cassianoleal··on Brazilian Court Sanctions Lawyers for Prompt Injection in Court Filing
I'm not sure it is. My intuition (Brazilian living in the UK, with lots of friends and family from or in Portugal) is that it's somewhat bigger but it's still close to 100$ interchangeable and understandable across speakers of either. Most Brazilians who have trouble understanding the Portuguese is because of accent, not language. Of course it helps that all Portuguese speaking countries have an orthography unification accord, and the grammar is pretty much the same.

100% this. Marketing should be regulated so it's purely factual. No deception. Here's a product. It does this thing. If it does it better than others, show exactly how it differs but don't say it's better (because that's subjective). Don't try to trick me into believing it's something that it's not.

Marketing should also come with stronger commitment. If it says it will do something in a certain way but it doesn't quite, consumer protection laws should be a lot stronger than they are even in Europe.

cassianoleal··on Lula Wins Brazilian Election
I am not avoiding the point. You are not making one in the first place.

No one is saying Putin is great or that he's making the world a better place.

cassianoleal··on Brazil's Flavio Bolsonaro headed to US, sources say

cassianoleal··on Lula Wins Brazilian Election
Change Nazi Germany there to Trump's USA and their strong ties with Netanyahu (and also Putin!) and re-read what you said. Laughing still?

What do you expect to happen? You live in la-la land, little buddy. Lula is a statesman in charge of the largest democracy in Latin America, and one that's just taught the entire world a lesson in democracy.

Retire to your tiny little corner of dream land and quit trolling and shitting on people who are actually trying to make the world a better place rather than spewing out useless ultra-ideological rhetoric with no practical consequences.

cassianoleal··on Ghostty 1.4
I have no idea what that is or why I would want it.
cassianoleal··on Ghostty 1.4
You could, but my answer would probably skew your opinion about as much as yours did mine. :D

To me the point of Konsole is that it works well, plus it's already there. Ghostty I need to make an effort to have it, however small it is, and I'm just trying to understand what I'd be missing if I didn't.

cassianoleal··on Ghostty 1.4
I still don't understand the point of Ghostty, Kitty, Wezterm...

Konsole is way faster than any of those on my computer and it has all the usual suspects I'd expect from a modern terminal emulator.

The one feature I miss since moving to Linux and not having iTerm2 is tmux -CC integration. None of those offer it.

To be clear, I'm not attempting to be dismissive. I really want to understand what it is that they bring.
