ppipada··on Ask HN: Why Do You Blog?
In short: For myself.

The question can be broken down as:

1. Why do you write?

> To collect my thoughts into a organized stream. So that I can forget the stream of thoughts and still have a place to recollect if needed.

2. Why write publically?

> Openness helps clean and calm the head further.

Better outside than inside...

ppipada··on The curse of knowing how, or; fixing everything
Wow, this post hit just too close to me. I came to same conclusion quite a while back (the author also mentions that we most probably always know this); BUT never able to get out of that mindset. I think fixing boundary issues is a hard problem, but still solvable. Dealing with Your Things (or atleast the ones you think are yours), i.e stuff that you have marked as your boundary, seems much much harder to deal with.

My mind has argued, and won to some extent, the opposite, but within a boundary: if you are responsible, why not do it better, if you are not doing it better, what is the point of it all?

ppipada··on Why Socialism? (1949)
Maybe one of the fundamental differences between a socialist and a capitalist lies in their degree of optimism about human altruism.

Socialists tend to be optimistic and believe that humans have the capacity to care for one another and collectively contribute to societal well-being.

Capitalists may be more skeptical of human nature, leaning on the idea that self-interest drives societal progress. They often argue that individuals are most motivated to contribute when they stand to personally benefit.

The article does shed a good light on humans relationship to the society it leans on and is hopeful of the possibility of a human system that can rely on a army of collective-good workers.

May be some day we will see such a system that doesnt discount the inherent competitiveness and survival bias of a individual.

ppipada··on Blunt/Direct Communicators, Online Communication and How to Overcome Challenges
Above is just my experience on how to navigate this mostly. This is definitly not about how to do F2F better. That is whole other topic, but I myself find that as not that difficult. Online is 10x worse than F2F for me generally.

ppipada··on Asus Zenfone 9
Lot of people seem to judge based on screen size rather than dimensions for size experience.

Here are relative dimensions:

Pixel 3 phone dimensions: 145.6 x 68.2 x 7.9 mm

Zenfone 9 phone dimensions: 146.5x68.1x9.1mm

Pixel 6a phone dimensions: 152.2 x 71.8 x 8.9 mm

Pixel 6 dimensions: 158.60 x 74.80 x 8.90mm

With current slim bezels and modified aspect ratios, dimensions have gone down for relatively larger screen sizes.

ppipada··on France bans veggie ′steaks,′ ′sausages′ to describe vegetarian products
In India, we have this standardised from quite some time. As an Indian vegetarian, I can imagine that naming vegetarian things with non-vegetarian terms would actually be detrimental to the products sales. We already have a name "chaap" for similar things.

ppipada··on Robert Caro and Kurt Vonnegut interview each other (1999)
Today is Sunday, and I am casually browsing through Hackernews and I find this article that seems to be talking about one of my favourite authors, Kurt.

It looks too long, the first question that comes to my mind on this sleepy day is whether this is worth it. A lot of these tend to be self wound articles, but I start reading and interest develops slowly but surely. Before you know it I am through reading and starting to wonder, how did I read this as a whole and how great this was. May be this was even small and some more of it wouldn't have hurt.

Thank you for posting this. This article gives great insight into the thought and the narrative behind these great authors. I would be looking forward to reading The Power Broker and the LBJ series. As always, reading about Kurt or his work is always fascinating.

ppipada··on Rob Pike interview
Generally speaking, hackernews comments related to Go have become toxic since last year or so. For some reason people seem to actually display hate.
